That is correct, the highest ever attendance at a match in Ireland was Down vs Offaly in 1961 at 90,556. The interesting fact though is that this was the OFFICIAL attendance, ie gate receipts. Estimates reckon that over 100,000 people packed into Croke Park that day, photographs show rows of supporter on the sidelines and the roof of the Hogan Stand!! 606168919410 (Down) - Posts: 9 - 03/08/2010 15:00:48 734284 Link 0 |

Please consult your history books before entering this debate. Down first took part in the Wembley Tournament in 1959 when they defeated Galway by 3-09 to 4-04 before a crowd of 32,000. This tournament was a regular feature in London for the many Irish emigrants living there, and indeed to this day London field a team in the Connacht Championship, as do New York. Down were also the first gaelic football team to do a coast to coast tour of America. So the match referred to above was indeed played in Wembley, and the match at Croke Park in 1961 is to this day the highest recorded figure for a single fixture held on the Island of Ireland. 606168919410 (Down) - Posts: 9 - 03/08/2010 18:04:11 734633 Link 1 |
