Replying To Seniorleague:  "Well im not totally opposed to what you're saying but i just dont get how a gaa player who decides to move to the afl is congratulated (you only live once, its his life and he can do what he likes etc) but a gaa player who moves club is the worst in the world.
There seems to be two totally different attitudes to two scenarios that are broadly similar."
To me, and I'd say anyone else who understands the community ethos of the GAA, those scenarios are vastly different rather than broadly similar.

Consider the case of Kobe McDonald. Let's say these two clubs approached him this year:
(a) St. Kilda. "Move out to us and have a go at earning a professional career for yourself."
(b) Ballina Stephenites. "We're shocked at how we went out of the championship early this year. Drive 10 minutes down the road to play for us instead of Crossmolina, and we could win senior again next year, and you'll have a medal then."

Do you really think (b) is broadly similar to (a) ?

Yes frankly.

The only real difference is hed be moving to Ballina for footballing reasons and hed be staying in the gaa, whereas hes basically moving to St Kilda for the money. Frankly the former option is more in line with the GAA ethos.

Replying To Viking66:  "Its nothing like saying that. Players are worth money in professional sports like soccer, they are commodities. If a player is poached by a bigger club the compensation is paid to the smaller club because that player has a future value for the club hes poached from. The compensation isnt paid due to the cost of developing the player."
Your point was that Naomh Chonaill aren't entitled to compo as,sure, theyd have been pluggin along anyways, even if Rorarty never played for them. You could easily apply that logic to say Norwich don't deserve compensation, if Man Utd come along and poached one of their players.

That wasnt my point at all, I was answering Commodores point that the club/county should be compensated for developing him.
You made a different point about soccer, and I pointed out to you that the only reason soccer clubs get compensation is because the player concerned has a future value. They arent compensated on account of development expenses.

It looks like we'll just have to agree to differ.
