Laois beat offaly by 30 something points in minor hurling today. That doesn't look good for us.... hunting (Wexford) - Posts: 1122 - 03/05/2025 19:59:58 2606495 Link 0 |
Tbf, Laois may be very good, I don't know (Westmeath beat Carlow today by a similar margin to what Laois beat them by) but I'm surprised your take from that scoreline is that it doesn't look good for us rather than Offaly must have been absolutely abysmal

1. We couldn't compete under the high ball and 2. we didn't win the breaks, Dublin had an extra player around the breaking area because two Wexford players went up for the same high ball and the other Wexford defenders were ball watching around the break and it allowed Dublin to be first to the breaking ball.

The point is being made that our defenders aren't good. I'm simply explaining why that isn't the case. Please tell me what's "wow" about that. I know you're around here a long time without posting a whole lot and your attitude is always the same. Please, please try and challenge my knowledge of Wexford hurling. I would love to go into it with you. I've seen every competitive home game, the majority of away and every single championship match since 1995. I know every single stroke, every score, every catch, every disappointment, every moment of joy and can recite them all Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3555 - 03/05/2025 22:44:20 2606539 Link 0 |
We were slow to react to breaks. It was clear from about the 12th minute that Dublin were really really up for it. We didn't respond as well as I'd have liked. I was disappointed with that too. I can forgive an awful lot but in spite of the few dodgy calls I thought we were lacking a bit of guts to be honest. In other words I don't think it's purely a hurling problem. I'll put it this way. Do you think last weekend was the best we can do? If you do then we may as well put up a white flag and head to the Joe mcdonagh now. All I'm trying to say is I don't think that's it for us and I'm refusing to be do negative after only dropping 2 points with 6 more to play for. Only the players know if crowding the dropping ball area was a deliberate plan or something they reacted to but you could see the Dublin players pulling off the defenders and getting loose in space, which they exploited for the two goals. If you are making a bigger stronger player you do not hurl him from behind or even the side under a dropping ball, you have to get the hurl up in front and prevent him from getting the ball. We seem to crowd the area on the basis he opposition would win the ball. Perhaps its a hangover from a sweeper system but backs don't seem to be able to anticipate the ball and play from in front of their man.

Regardless of the result in the Minor next week, I don't really get why a Tier 1 team always has to play away to a Tier 2 team, yes, it increases the chance of a Tier 2 team getting the result but I don't really see how it develops them in the long-term ElGranSenor (Wexford) - Posts: 471 - 04/05/2025 09:58:40 2606565 Link 0 |
I think that's our level, that view isn't based on last weekend, it's based on watching us over the last number of years.

I'd agree with that. The Antrim guy that marked Chin was very good at it. When it was one on one he broke most of the balls. The ones that Chin catch, he caught when a group of players went for the ball. Chin is one of the best in country at catching the high ball but the Antrim back nullified him by using the hurl when it was one on one. It is a good Laois team, it will be a good game I'm sure. Our minor team are decent too, I wouldn't have them as underdogs.

Doubt it. Every county will have a mainly new different minor team every year.

You are better playing behind Zinny. If you play in front and miss the ball you are giving away a goal chance straight away. If the lad is bigger than you you should drop a couple of yards behind him then time your run and jump, therefore jumping higher than you would from a standing start, and bat the ball out. The last thing you should do is stand right next to a bigger stronger forward, whether you are in front, behind, or to the side.

I thought Limerick the other night showed how to be organised as a defence. Granted Waterford were tiring and needed a goal so had to try going direct. But unless the Limerick defender was going to win the ball cleanly, they were playing the percentages. Get that ball to the ground and get numbers around the break. If Hayes at 6 had to drop deeper one of the midfielders was dropping into his spot. Their distribution from the back was excellent too. Find the spare man around the middle so they have two options, shoot from distance or play inside. Timbertony (Wexford) - Posts: 394 - 04/05/2025 19:38:03 2606674 Link 0 |

I said id give it a few days for things to cool off before coming on here. There was a good bit of nonsense wrote like there always is after a defeat. The dublin game is gone now and im sure they have looked over it and will try learn from it. Keith rossitor what a gentleman after the game. So gracious in defeat and after that goal was never was. He knows himself that dublin were the better team and too many of his players didnt hurl well enough. Foley obviously had a really tough day but he has being very good so i wouldnt be too critical of him. Its disappointing theres no back up when things arent going right full back. On the question in your last line - I don't know. Two years ago, Tier 1 had two groups of four. Antrim, Kerry, Laois and Offaly came 3rd and 4th in those groups, and were put down to Tier 2 for when the structure changed for 2024. Tier 1 in 2024 then was just four teams, and they finished in this order: 1. Galway 2. Dublin 3. Wexford 4. Kilkenny But the same four teams were still in Tier 1 this year. So maybe there's no relegation/promotion between the tiers. Or maybe it was a case that "Kilkenny are too good to be relegated......" Does anyone think Wexford clubs will do well in feile st Anne's the division 1 winners look strong and have some very good players but might be to overwhelmed by the strong cork and Kilkenny sides the division 2 winners buffers alley look like they could do well in division 2 and are building a good side and I honestly don't know to much about the Geraldine o hanrahans Hurler20 (Wexford) - Posts: 2 - 04/05/2025 23:57:45 2606731 Link 0 |
