I agree with this post. The Sunday Game football panel also made some similar glaring mistakes last year in selecting their team of the year. A whole range of biases were very evident which I commented on at the time. However when the All Star football team was announced, they did a much better job. Would expect that the same might happen with the hurling team this year. letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 639 - 23/07/2024 19:02:38 2561043 Link 0 |
I agree. When it comes to best players of the year all stars are a bit of a let down. It's completely obsessed with finalists and winners. It's almost a second reward for finalists. Players ratings from the final suffer something similar. When you read them after Sunday you'd assume Clare won by 10 points and not one point in et. With the advent of round robin championships there should be a much broader context taken but if anything it's focusing even more on the final. Louth will definitley get 1 all star, they have a habit of being darlings of the GAA , they got 2 in 2010, just to make up for the leinster final loss, 1 was plenty but to punish a young lad from meath over it was shoocking, meath reached quater finals and graham reilly was top scorer from play in the country but denied an all star, although he was nomination for young footballer of the year, if he wasnt to get that he should have got an all star. louth only made last round qualifier, fermanagh made a last round qualifer in 2005 i think and barry owens got one, and westmeath similar picked up all stars for handy qualifier runs to quater finals in 2006 and 2008, meath also denied any all stars in 2009 as semi finalists who ran kerry to 2-8 to 1-7 defeat. i dont know what meath did to offend anyone that year as it was before 2010 bar knock mayo outof championship.

Louth only got one all star in 2010. The great Paddy Keenan making history as he becomes the first Wee County player to win an all star. John O Brien got nominated in 2010 but he failed to win one.

Personally, I would have both Paddy Burns and Rory Grugan in my 15 at the moment but alot depends on the final 97Cavans (Cavan) - Posts: 379 - 27/07/2024 20:52:32 2562011 Link 0 |

The Sunday Game Team of the Year is becoming a bit of a joke now. Armagh with 8 on the team last night and Galway with 5, Donegal with 2. No Kerry or Louth player making it. It's a team of the year not team of the final/semi final. If Armagh didn't win yesterday they wouldn't have had 8 players on the team last night. Oisin Conaty has been good for Armagh but a great final yesterday and all of a sudden he's ahead of Paudi Clifford for team of the year. Paudi has been Kerry's key man and danger man for every team all year he definitely deserves his place. Craig Lennon or Mulroy deserve their place also. Aidan Forker at 6 on team of the year? Not for me once again just because he had a good final and was victorious captain. Aaron McKay scored a goal yesterday and Comer was very poor still not the best full back we've seen all year. Brendan McCoole I thought was excellent, Jason Foley very good too. Just my opinion obviously but it's if you win the final you get the most players on the team along with runner up getting a good chunk of it too. It's a league, championship team. 5 months of football to be looked at SillySimonsOpinion (Meath) - Posts: 64 - 29/07/2024 12:52:48 2562573 Link 0 |

Craig Lennon with 4-7 from play from wing back, 6th highest scorer from play in the whole championship. Be hard to see how he won't win one. Past hurler (None) - Posts: 827 - 19/09/2024 23:34:09 2570877 Link 0 |

If you are going to be critical and sarcastic at least get your facts right That was posted BEFORE the All Ireland final and as the poster pointed out Shane Walsh would be in contention with a good final

Just thinking if I was selecting a team, I would prefer Shane Walsh or Aiden O Shea , or Con or the 2 Cliffords before some of the All Stat forward line picked. jacktheboy (Donegal) - Posts: 450 - 31/10/2024 11:58:13 2577709 Link 1 |
Not sure you understand the concept of the All stars in a particular specific year. Doubt you'd be making that argument if Donegal had six or seven players selected.
