Following on from my last message, maybe top 3 from each group into quarters (6 teams) and then 4th and 5th play in a preliminary quarter final. Bottom to relegation, still a bit of incentive but makes sure bottom team goes to relegation. Negatives, only gives one extra game to four teams instead of 8 but bottom team team into relegation. alwaysasub (Wexford) - Posts: 444 - 08/11/2024 09:13:16 2578890 Link 0 |
I'd just to back to the way it was. Am not convinced that a system to work in an extra round to give an extra game to some or most clubs will ever make a huge difference, when you consider that every Wexford club was already guaranteed at least five championship games anyway. Am unaware of any other county that guarantees any more than this. In particular, wouldn't like your suggestion of needing an extra week for the sake of just two matches and just four clubs. Without it, there'd be the possibility of another 'rest week' for all, or greater leeway in getting things finished earlier if we had to do so for Leinster. I was in favour of that extra preliminary Q/F and the new format but based on this years championship I don't think it has worked. 100% agree that if you finish last in your group then you should be in a relegation final. I do think that if the split season was re-introduced then the format may have worked better - but this season seems to drag on with a lot poor games. Personally I think it has been a pretty dour championship more noted for refereeing issues than the hurling. MyOhMi (Wexford) - Posts: 159 - 08/11/2024 10:58:36 2578907 Link 0 |
I agree with all you say apart from how you claim "constantly" changing format of the League and Championship. This year's change to the hurling championship was the first since 2012. For the league, the change two years ago to bring a new system for promotion & relegation was the first significant change there since 2012 either. Only other changes along the way were how some years there'd be semi-finals, and some years not, but the basic format had stayed the same - i.e. you played the six teams from the other group in your championship grade. A P.S. to the above - meant to say that this year's change was the first since 2012 apart from the changes that were necessary during the couple of "Covid championships". Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2617 - 08/11/2024 12:29:36 2578926 Link 0 |
We put in a motion to return to what we had the last couple of years.

I'm glad to hear somebody's doing so. Will be suggesting the same in my own club. You realise however that'll be a motion for the January meeting on competition regulations, rather than a motion for Convention in early December? If you mean you've put it in for that, it won't be taken there, and you'll have to put it in again for January. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2617 - 08/11/2024 14:16:45 2578941 Link 0 |
You got in ahead of me. Motions for championship not till later.

We knew it wouldn't be discussed til our January meeting. What we did last year at Convention was defer the motions to be discussed on format/structure until January. We were worried that if we didn't get the motion in in time for Convention then it wouldn't be discussed in January. So we sent it in just in case.

I thought that the decisions on championship happen in November and then at the AGM they decide on elections of officers etc. has it moved to January?

Was January this year anyway.

Used to happen in November all right. Then last year, it was decided to put it back to January. This was because the dates for this year's Leinster Club Championships wouldn't become known until sometime in December, and so Wexford wouldn't know until then whether or not Leinster would agree to push the start of their championships back by a week or two to allow more times for county championships to be finished. With Wexford already under pressure to fit in what was 16 and what became 17 rounds between hurling & football, it was decided to wait until the Leinster dates were known before making decisions about our own championships, and therefore those decisions were put back to January. This time round, clubs were given a choice between going back to doing it in November, or again putting it back to January. They chose the January option. For what it's worth, Viking's club needn't have worried about getting their motion in for Convention anyway. There'll be a different date set for sometime in late December or early January for motions for that January meeting, and so long as it was in by then, it'd be taken at that meeting anyway. Real game of 2 halves in the Intermediate final. Jimmies will be rueing a slow start, and some poor wides at the start of the 2nd half. And a good point disallowed. Overall Rathnure just about deserved to win. They will need to unearth some backs if they aren't to struggle back up at Senior next year. I always hear that we should follow the Kilkenny model, so with that in mind I propose a straight knockout club football championship, ideally with the final played before the end of May. The county footballers will be out of the Leinster championship mid April, and we should forget about the tailteann cup, so there's plenty of time to run off a club football championship by the end of May. The league is the county footballers championship anyway. WEX98 (Wexford) - Posts: 474 - 10/11/2024 20:24:37 2579137 Link 0 |

No. But the lad hasn't forgotten where he came from.

Agree with the game of 2 halves. Rathnure were perfect for the first 10 minutes or so. Every shot went over the bar from all angles and their touch was brilliant and winning every ball in the forwards. Second half Rathnure went out of it all together and couldn't get the ball past the half forward line for majority of the second half. On another note I thought the referee was very poor. I know he was probably trying to make a contest of it as it was looking like a hammering after first 10 minutes but by God some of his decisions were daft. Tough loss on St James as 2nd year in a row losing the intermediate final. Would like to see Matt o Hanlon get to play in senior club championship. He's been great servant to Wexford for so many years and was such a big part of the jimmies coming up from Junior.

I suspect you're not being 100% serious (!), but there's a point in there all the same. The Kilkenny model is much like the one we had now insofar as there's a group stage where everybody goes through, followed by a knockout stage. Big difference though is where they have gap weeks and everybody continues to concentrate 100% on hurling in those weeks. They're not training for and playing football matches instead. That's the essence to why their system serves Kilkenny hurling so well. If we really did want to follow "the Kilkenny model", we'd have to relegate our football championships to a minor sideshow in the early part of the year as well, with none of our county hurlers playing in it. I thought he was inconsistent insofar as he seemed pretty whistle happy in the 1st half, then let lads away with a lot more during the second half. But as a neutral I thought he was pretty consistent as in not favouring 1 team or the other. Overall I thought he did pretty well, better than some of his more well known colleagues did in Senior games this year. As regards the Jimmy's, now that we won't be in Intermediate next year I'd be delighted if they got up to Senior. Would I be right in saying it would be their first time ever hurling Senior? Yeah, thought myself that it was the sort of refereeing display where both sides were unhappy at different times with certain decisions, but overall, he didn't unduly favour one side over the other. Agree with all that's been said about the match. Rathnure were hugely dominant for about 95% of the first half and ever looked in real danger of being caught even coming towards the end of the game. Means they've gone the whole year in Intermediate without a serious prolonged challenge. May have had a few nervy moments v the Alley in their semi-final, and again coming near the end of the game yesterday, but not a single match where they weren't clearly the better team over the 60 minutes. By the way, am as sure as can be that you're right that St. James' have never played senior hurling. They have no Intermediate title anyway, and nor do they have any Junior title from the years (1937 to 1955) when there was no Intermediate, meaning that Junior winners went straight to senior. Speaking of Junior, thought the Duffry were good value for their win yesterday too, and another few goals wouldn't have flattered them. St Pat's goalkeeper did brilliantly a few times in the first half to keep them out, and was hugely unfortunate then with the first one that did get past him, but you could say that goal was coming anyway. Overall, another clear case of how the best side won. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2617 - 11/11/2024 14:16:03 2579231 Link 0 |
