What did you end up doing?"
I didn't fancy doing an acca. I've backed Harry Kane to score (anytime) today, 11/10 with PP. And I fancy Turkey against Austria tomorrow. They are 16/5 to win, 9/4 the draw (both 90 mind play), with PP.

England 11/5. Stuck a sneaky 20 on out.

I backed Harry to score anytime in the 90 minutes, and he goes and scores in the 91st minute. He's not ' one of my own' anymore.

Can't see Romania or Turkey progressing, but certainly not both.

It actually reads more like a gambling message board than anything else, and besides we already have a non gaa forum.

I redeemed myself. Backed Spain to win, with a -2 goals handicap at 12/5, when they were winning 2-1 in the 2nd half. They were hugely impressive tonight. Germany v Spain in the quarters, should be some game (Friday 5pm ko).

You've got 4 of the more predictable winners up so far (even the RTE panel unanimously plumped for Switzerland). Aren't you wonderful! And you did an EIGHT team accum....the bookies really love gamblers like you!

After a good few exciting group games in the opening week, the knockout stage, so far, has been dull. The Spain v Georgia game had plenty of action and goals, but was so one-sided. I think the two matches later today could be good, with a few goals. I fancy Turkey and the Netherlands to go through to the next round. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Austria and Romania.
Overall, so far, I think Spain are a class above rest, followed by Germany. I'm looking forward to their quarter-final clash on Friday.

I watched the Portugal / Slovenia game on RTE 2 last night and I couldn't believe the drivel coming from 2 of the 3 pundits. DI Di Hamann went on and on and on about the emotional and childish behavior of CR 7 when he missed the penalty, he failed to discuss the quality of the save, Ronaldo's body language / persona was not to everyone's liking and so be it, it is a sad, sad day when personalities are allowed to take from a naturally gifted sports man on the field of play in what will most likely be his last International major tournament, John Terry came to Ronaldo's rescue and lambasted the BBC for allowing some sly and unsporting comments to be fired in his direction as well.

Slovenia's Sesko their #11 missed a sitter gifted to him by PEPE the one mistake that he made all night, but he missed a great chance of making himself a National if not a world hero for ever especially having Ronaldo on the team and he not scoring, but fortunately for Ronaldo and his team mates and indeed all fair-minded sports people they get another chance to prove a certain type of critic's wrong, at the same time giving some journalists, pundits, presenters and commentators time to sharpen their knives and prepare for another war of words.

The Portugal keeper Diogo Costa almost did the impossible by saving 3 consecutive penalties on the trot there by in a few short minutes becoming a super hero, allowing Shay Givens the oppertunity to give his views after all Shay being a keeper of quality himself, our RTE pundits failed miserably to give some honor to his magnificent goalkeeping display especially in a game that was tenacious, physical and on a knife edge for 120 plus minutes all of which can I add that Ronaldo played for, he also as captain walked up to take and score the first penalty after missing one earlier on.

We will never see the likes of the touches of brilliance that we have seen in Ronald again. So I am going to enjoy while I can.
For entertainment sake if nothing else I hope Portugal reach the final, and if they do I'll roar them on.

'a world hero' really........don't understate it anyway.

Portugal aren't Brazil, they've only won the one euro championship and no world cup, so I'm not feeling your hype here or your enthusiasm for the subject matter.

The tournament should be getting more exciting as the games get more important, but the opposite has happened so far. Casual fans are likely waiting for the quarter finals, rather than boring themselves to death watching the round of 16 'action'.

Ronaldo has turned himself into a laughing stock. Taking all those free kicks last night, going for goal with one of them from out near the sideline was pathetic.

He's a pale shadow of the great player he once was. Portugal are effectively trying to win this tournament playing with 10 men. He could play a starring role off the bench, although I'm not convinced he even has that in him anymore. The mistimed jumps for headers, the weak and wayward shooting, the flicks to no one, the random falling over is just very sad.

It's been a sad couple of years now tacked onto a legendary career.

Hamann was spot on. He said before the match that Ronaldo was more of a team player in his later years. A 10 year old who missed a penalty wouldn't whinge like that. It was a good save, but Ronaldo's run up told him where he was putting it. His second penalty was brilliant. Rarely misses them. Ronaldo was childish all night. Taking free kicks when it was the wrong option. His timing going for crosses was off and Slovenian defence were good. He has been brilliant footballer but last night was a wake up call for him. He should retire from international football after this and not get found out in more games and be remembered for that. Hopefully he can get into a better frame of mind because Portugal's alternatives to him are worse. Sesko wouldn't find his boots, never mind lace them. Costa had almost nothing to do during the game. He saved 3 penalties. That's his job, as they say in Cork! Ronaldo didn't.

Ronaldo is in the Elvis-In-Vegas stage.

In the World Cup, Santos had the bottle to drop him for their last 16 match. What happened next?

Portugal's little technicians & a mobile centre forward absolutely spanked a decent Switzerland team 6-1. That should have been that. But the Portuguese FA in their wisdom went & appointed Ronaldo's biggest fan it seems. Back to square one then.

It'll be more of the same against France nothing surer, with Ronaldo increasing his ever impressive points tally from free kicks. (Incidentally, he has scored 1 goal from 60+ attempts in tournament football). It's playground stuff, him hogging every set piece when better options are clearly available. Any sort of strong manager would be telling him to clear away off when dangerous set piece options present themselves.

Over the past little while I began to notice how the ever-growing TikTokzation of football punditry has crept into club and in particular professional international games, more worryingly into the personal lives of some hand-picked people who they think needs their comeuppance, in this instance it is Ronaldo. I am referring to some TV pundits, presenters and sporting journalists, all in the name of tam ratings and winning back lost viewers and readers etc.

GreenandRed (Mayo) That is a good and sporting post of yours and I agree with some of it but not it all, for example, Hamann was not spot on in my view in fact he himself was the one that was whinging non stop about how Ronaldo broke down in tears when he missed the penalty, Hamann can call it what he likes as in crying or whinging, my own view is that he was emotionally shattered because he is human and he felt he let his country down first then his team possibly realizing he won't get the same chance again. Again you are correct when you say his body language told the keeper what side of him he would send in the ball.

NB You say Sesko wouldn't find his boots that may very well be, but I say Baby Sesko would have scored that goal.

NB arís. I was a little bit surprised when you referenced Costa in saying he saved 3 penalties but that's his job. ??

MesAmis. Your post is honest and pulls no punches, however I do not agree when you say Ronaldo has turned himself into a laughing stock, not so, for starters Ronaldo has an Instgram following of 633,000,000 loyal followers, I breeze in and out of it myself sometimes. There is no player perfect or sometimes near it, France one of the favorites to win it out had to wait minutes from the end for the winning goal and one of my favorite players Mbappe was awol all night as was 7 or 8 others, but like Portugal they are through and that is all that matters, for now. I will agree he is on the wane and his playing days are nearing an end whether he is picked to play or not is another thing,

Lockjaw. Ronaldo is in the Elvis-In-Vegas stage. If that is the case he is not on his own, by a long shot..

Santos said he dropped Ronaldo for tactical reasons only. You say the Portuguese FA in their wisdom went & appointed Ronaldo's biggest fan, so they now find themselves in the quarter final against France. You say it will be more of the same against France, perhaps it will.

The game between Portugal and Slovenia was in my opinion the most physical, tenacious, mental sapping game of the tournament, for sure, so if Portugal can come to terms with the bumps, bruises, aches, pains etc and get their heads ready anything can happen. Keeping in mind it was a deflective shot listed as an own goal in the 85 min that gave France victory over the Belgians.
