London pulled off a shock comfortable win over Offaly. Sligo had a good win over Wexford, as had Fermanagh over Wicklow. Sligo and Fermanagh are two counties who could have a good summer going all the way to Croke Park.

Shocking from Offaly

Longford 4/1 to beat Kildare. Not a bad price with Kildare in the doldrums.

Down beat Limerick. Down are another county who'll be expected to have a reasonably good summer getting to Croke Park.

The much maligned Kildare had a big win over Longford. Leitrim saw off the challenge of Waterford. Kildare will be seen as genuine Tailteann challengers after today's impressive win.

Agree. Players need to ask themselves do they want to represent their county with pride. Offaly have never put a full effort into the qualifiers/ Tailteann Cup.
The manager cannot get in players heads if they appear disinterested.

Laois and Carlow drew while Antrim beat Tipperary. Kildare, Sligo, Fermanagh and Down are possibly the early favourites to make the semi-finals. A lot of football to be played yet of course.

Can never understand this attitude by players. The "we don't train all year to play in a B championship". I'd love to know what exactly they are training for.

Unreal result from London. Hopefully onwards and upwards from them.

I'd imagine they are training to move through the ranks in the league. For teams like Offaly, it's imperative that they see progress there so they can realistically compete for the likes of leinster and maybe even Sam.
To play in the Champions League, teams need to finish near the top of their domestic league. The TC requires the opposite.
It's a bit demeaning to teams IMO. Peak time of the season. Let's put this chap together so Provincial Councils can still feel significant.
I respect Offaly for taking a stance. A county that never lacked the courage to stand their ground. I just wish they'd pull out of it altogether and it might spark some positive change to our game!

Some of their defenders should have stood their ground at the weekend...

What positive change would that make exactly?

Also what's demeaning about it? Despite what you and others think it's not the 80s anymore and Offaly at the moment aren't going to be challenging to win either Leinster or an All-Ireland.

Teams from division 2 and 3 will start of the year aiming to avoid this competition. It's like a mid season relegation.
Maybe I'm wrong and this cup will get stronger and stronger. All we ever hear about is how crap our competition format is. Then Offaly show little interest and we're wondering why!

I think we are wondering why. Offaly are not Tyrone or Kerry, or even Meath or Down. So the mind boggles why they wouldn't take it seriously.

Your first line shows that the TC has put even more value on the league in those divisions. If they want to play in the AI series then they need to get into Div 2. Offaly were closer to getting relegated to Div 4 than getting promoted from Div 3 this year so I'm not sure how they are prioritising training to move through the ranks of the league.

Ridiculous comment…. Teams like Offaly ( and maybe ourselves ) should embrace the Taltainn Cup and go all out to win because let's face it they have no hope in any other competition

The format that gives Offaly at least 4 championship games a year? Not so long ago the likes of Offaly were complaining about not having enough games at this time of year. Now they get this and still complaining about it. What exactly do they want?

4 games 3 of which they have a reasonable chance of winning! and progressing further.

Someone obviously forgot to tell London that Offaly were far too good for the TC!!

The best thing to say when you get well beaten in a game is to say that we have no interest in the competition, and it's a crap competition anyway. !!!!
