When you blow the lead in games I don't think it's a never say die attitude of your team, more so the opposition. Well done Derry. Expected a tight game but Mayo to pull through. However, you can't go 35m in championship football without a score and expect to win. They just lacked that cutting edge up front. Derry will be a tough prospect for anyone now. Tyrone are shambolic. I really fancied them in Omagh but there was no intensity and they don't seem to have a plan B. Blanket, turnover, lethargic attack seems to be the system but that's it. Delighted for the Rossies. Conor McManus, one of, if not the, greatest forward of his generation. Loved watching him play. An intriguing weekend so far. All 3 games could have gone either way. Really sorry for Mayo and I would have hoped for the 3 Connacht sides to get through. It highlights the anomalies of the system that Mayo lost 1 game in championship ( unluckily by 1 point) while Derry got 3 fairly decent beatings but the bottom line is that Derry were slightly better than them yesterday. I also feel that the teams that had tough games against div 1 opposition last week struggled this week. Mayo v Dublin, gakway v armagh . I would even go as far as to say that Tyrone had a tougher game v cork than ros v cavan or indeed Derry v westmeath or Monaghan v Meath. The repeat pairings applies to the Provincial finals and the group stages. As we played Donegal in the quarters of Ulster we can draw them again. OK Watched the game back there nowm painful an adl all as it was. I will try and keep my observations confined to documentable facts. Yesterdays game was the first "must win" game of 2024 and we did not win it. One point from play in the Connacht final and again yesterday is not enough from our main scorer who has been outstanding all year. On the one hand I agree with Martin Carney and Cora who have pointed to a pattern of Mayo struggling when AOS is taken off. Even when he is not on the ball he is causing problems for teams. We gambled big time by going all in to try and beat the Dubs, probably on the basis thatb they had not had a meaningful game in months. Although they were rattled by our hunger and intensity, the truth is that Dublin were not at full tilt, and would not have been too inconvienced had they lost. The mental strain of that failure to beat the Dubs, and the physical effort showed yesterday. Pat Spillane is still 100% correct in his contention that our downfall is down to lack of natural scoring forwards. Finally I expect the last survivors of 2014 epic to call it off now. The championship has finally sprung to life! It has been a long process. Ahead of Louth v Cork later, I think these are the possible pairings: Armagh v Roscommon, Cork or Louth.
