Attendances 2024

Replying To Curlew66:  "The 2014 was ultra defensive and far from 'attractive' but the win was celebrated like none other in the Kingdom. Kerry were genuine contenders this year and will be in the mix again next year. Having the 'best player of his generation ' on board and local hero Seanie O Shea , a previous match winner should have been enough of a reason for anyone from Neidin to travel.
Special trains were laid on for Kerry fans to Dublin with more on standby. Spare a thought for folk from Gweedore wishing to cheer on O 'Baoill or Inishowen based supporters of McGonagle without a train in sight but many still managed to get there.
Kerry coasted through the first half, scoring with ease and turning over Armagh with great efficiency. The team needed a lift when scores dried up mid way through 2nd half , Armagh began to dominate and were roared home by that orange wall of sound. My ears were sore for hours after that crescendo greeting Turbid's lung bursting 95m run on the 89th minute to fist the insurance point.
I know some of those Kerry players, decent lads deserving of a bit more support before a final from fans content with 38 titles (22 of them over 50 years ago)."
Well said...

Extra supporters from Kerry, may well have got them over the line at the weekend.
It definitely helps a team.

Replying to Curlew66. Kerry have won 16 senior titles in the last 50 years, 22 in the last 75 years.

Replying To FlowerLodge:  "Definitely wouldn't have sold out at 250,000. England brought 50,000 fans, it was 3:1 English. 100,000 would have been enough capacity.
Even, in your imaginary world, if they sold out at 250,000 thats still a very small percentage of the combined populations of England and Spain (110 million).
There wasn't far off 250,000 GAA fans from the 4 semi finals, combined population of the 8 counties about 1.7 million, much higher percentage."
I don't even reply to that Walter Mitty from Cavan any more. Totally clueless. The facts are we have had another exciting Championship, and like all sports competition throughout the world, the anticipation and excitement levels rise as we get towards their conclusions. We are a long way from the free ridden games of the seventies and eighties. 50 to 60 frees per game were commonplace as were attendances of 25% of capacity in Croke Park at semi finals. All Ireland finals didn't even sell out. The madness of knock out Championships from round 1 resulted in very little interest in most counties outside the chosen few. The Round Robin ensures mostly that counties arrive at the knockout stage by similar route. Every game has consequences and 3 out of 4 ensures few dead rubbers. The nonsense that we give up August and September, when in fact only 4 counties had any interest in August and only 2 were interested in September. It also ensures that the most important of our Association, the clubs, can have all their players available to get the County Championships up and running in mid August. Instead of having 1% of senior GAA players playing in August and September, we now have 100%. Also it is great to hear of a possible 3rd tier being added to the Championship. All counties on top of having a route to the Sam Maguie Cup will have a realistic chance of winning a Championship at their own level. Looking forward to both All Ireland finals and then onto our County Championships. Such a privilege to be part of this great Association and to be able to go out each weekend to enjoy our games. To hell with the begrudgers. As the late Micháel Ó Muireartaigh said, "each generation has the right to play the game in their own way".

2 in what will now be the last 16 years (at least). Which is a disappointing return as we've had some great teams (as well as underage & colleges) in that time.

Have you bothered to ask why the Kerry fans didn't turn up..? The total rubbish football Kerry are playing at the moment is one thing but the huge cost is another… Heading up to Croke park every couple of weeks costs huge money with the exorbitant entrance fees and all other costs as well… People aren't made of money… It's a different case with Armagh as they are in a novelty phase… The GAA are making a complete mess out of the Championship by shortening the season so much…too many games ( many of them meaningless ) pilled on top of each other…. Thankfully Burns sees the problem and is willing to look at changing it.. Clowns on here are either too dumb or just plain ignorant that can't see our game has a big problem….

True stat , as I said 22 of the their 38 was over 50 years ago leaving 16 won in the past 50 years …simple maths.
Kerry and Dublin are superpowers of Gaelic football and no one need worry about their legacy and future success . Leaving Croke Park on Saturday I felt happy for Armagh players and fans but a tinge of sympathy for the Kerry players representing their great county. They can be forgiven for feeling abandoned by their fans despite winning Sam two years ago and being level with Dublin entering injury time in last year's decider, felt they deserved better than just a ripple of applause after some well taken scores . Jack O Connor alluded to the lack of support in post match comments. Kerry could and probably should have won last Saturday in normal time and returned home to face lengthy post mortems,, almost two hours on 'Terrace Talk' alone. (Radio KY).
Offering past victories as an excuse for not bothering to travel is very tough on the current generation of players. We would be similarly disappointed if Limerick fans decided not to support their wonderful hurlers next year until they reached a final on the grounds that they had won 5 of the last 7 finals.

It will be just one All-Ireland in 10 years for Kerry which is even more disappointing reading. This pairing of Armagh V Galway in the final is a dream pairing for the GAA considering the domination of Dublin, Kerry and Tyrone over the last 20 years. We have already seen the colour and huge number of supporters these counties bring to the games. It will give hope to other counties that they too can get to an All-Ireland final, it certainly throws wide open the 2025 football championship.

Well said. No doubt extra support on Sat. may have got them oner the line. The lack of support before finals is nothing new in Kerry. There are clowns on this forum that believe in their simple minds that it is the structures the football etc. Total nonsense. The Kerry people are poor supporters. Only an All Ireland Final or a Munster final with Cork will bring them out. This was proven during the reign of their all conquering 70/80s side. Paltry attendances except for the aforementioned games. Delighted to see the true GAA supporters of Armagh and Galway having the chance to cheer on their team in the final. On the matter of change, Jarlath Burns is a smart man and knows a winner when he sees it, so structure changes will be minimal. Kerry/Armagh (1982)- 17,000 attendance, Kerry /Armagh (2024) -55,000 attendance. Gakway/Donegal (1983) - 28,000 attendance, Galway/Donegal (2024) - 65,000 attendance. Only a deluded Cavan man who thinks admission should still be £5, a game should have 60 frees awarded, and that Cavan people like ourselves should be on a ration of 1 Championship game most years,or that the Ulster champions after a ferocious campaign should play a well rested Kerry team in the AI semi final in front of 17 000 fans. The same lad wants us to hold up 30 County's club Championships while we wait on 2 counties to play an All Ireland Final on the last Sunday in September,oh and the replay in the middle of October. Anyone with an ounce of wit can see we are on the right road. Most importantly 100% of our players are supportive.

You must have nothing to do only bring up old attendance figures… shows how ignorant you are .. those figures have nothing to do with the modern game.. Everyone knows… players , managers , the GAA President and most supporters ( except the odd deluded clown like yourself ) that the football championship is in a terrible state… a couple of reasonably attended close matches at the end of the championship is only papering over the glaring cracks in the system…. Football has become unwatchable and even Jarlath Burns admits this so it is worrying that a dunce like you can't admit the same…. Maybe a trip to the doctor would be of some help to you…. That's free advice for you good lad.

You know a man has lost credibility and the argument when he resorts to personal insults.

Well said! Definitely on the right road. Some tweaks are needed but the sample size is way too small in terms of the new structures to come to any definitive conclusions. We had well over 100 years of the knock out system and more than sufficient data to conclude that it was a crazy way of organising the main competition. It is remarkable that the GAA survived so well with such a structure. We then had two decades of the qualifier structure, with many small tweaks, and that outlived its usefulness. We need at least a decade of this new structure before any conclusions can be made. Kneejerk reactions and harking after some mythical golden age are not sensible.

Ah lads (Forever & Oriel) no need for for neighbours from proud footballing counties to be be getting nasty with each other , this name calling is getting us nowhere. Both of you are making valid points about fine tuning the championship (rules review underway and will be for another day)
In the meantime we could review if this home/away/neutral group matches is working out. Should it be just the top 2 teams only from each group qualifying for the semi finals or should the 2nd and 3rd team be allowed more recovery time and not have to play three successive week ends. I think only Monaghan last year and Galway this year have succeeded to reach last 4 from that position and it hast helped their injury situation.

I am afraid it is you that is deluded. Same old whinging and negativity in every post. Bringing up old attendance figures is perfectly valid, particularly when you hark back to some mythical golden era that never existed.
Cavan won 17 out of 19 Ulster Championships between 1931 and 1949. If there had been social media then, the equivalent of you in the other counties would have had a field day and would have dragged everyone down - I can hear it, championship in a terrible state, unwatchable, totally one-sided games, poor attendances. Luckily there were sufficient people there of vision and drive that brought the other counties forward and created today's competitive championship.

Well maybe 2 who are totally delusional… Thank goodness we have a proper president now who can see the game is in big trouble and will bring in some changes that might get people back interested in it again… The season is almost at an end and up until now there was zero interest in it but you seem more than happy with that… That just doesn't seem right to me…!

15,000 fanzone tickets sold out in 45 minutes earlier today - not sure if GAA releasing any additional tickets or not. Good idea but surely can increase the capacity at the Pairc
Tickets for Sunday hard to come by..

The season is only almost at an end for those not interested in the club game.
