Expecting somewhere around 40,000 in Croke Park on Saturday, Kerry match will attract most of that but be a lot of people wanting to see Limerick too. First time our fellas have played Limerick since 2018 league semi final in Kilkenny, I like watching Limerick but suspect that I won't get much pleasure from them at weekend. Official attendance was just over 36,800. Probably slightly disappointing given that the All Ireland Champions in both codes were out and a double header for €20 is very reasonable. Even at that it would be early hours of Sunday morning when the supporters would be getting back to Kerry. I wonder would a bigger crowd be attracted if this was played at, lets say 1.30 & 3.30 on a Sunday?. I do like the Saturday night in Croker under lights but I do think it turned off a lot of Kerry supporters (probably for the best given the result), not sure about Limerick supporters as they have an hour or 2 less to travel and their game was on 2 hours earlier and a lot of them seemed to head for home after the hurling. They used to that and filled Croke Park for a league game between Dublin and Tyrone once, and got close to 60,000 for Dublin and Kerry league game after the 2011 final if i recall correctly. Fr Dougal Maguire could sell Dublin V Kerry in Croke Park under lights months after they played out a highly entertaining All Ireland Final. If he was anyway stuck for ideas you could point out to him that you had Con vs Clifford as a side show. Possibly the 2 greatest forwards and most marketable players we'll see in our lifetimes. Dubs made a big effort with their league games calling them "the Spring Series" pulled in big crowds some years back. Seem to have given up on that now. When you think the IRFU can sell out Munster vs Leinster as this huge grudge match twice a year even it the top 20 players have better things to do than tog in this fixture so you are effectively looking at 2 second strings. The GAA need to to much better here. Knocking the hurling league division 1 down to 5 games is also crazy. Do they want to show kids their heros or not. Cork just wrapped up the last of their 2 home league games on a bitterly cold and wet February Sunday. Attendances are good around the country, but as you say they could build them even bigger by selling them as events that people will be attracted to. Certainly not going to be attracted if they don't even know they are going on! That may sound silly, but in this day and age there is so much happening that you need to have your product in peoples faces. The costs of buying prime time ads would well recoup themselves. There will always be the core support, but that can be greatly expanded for certain games, and even as with the Munster/Leinster series turned into a fixture that there is huge demand for even though it ranks pretty low these times outside of the rivalry. Attendances are at a very high level, approximately 150,000 people at matches in February is remarkable, one poster mentioned Leinster vs Munster at Thomond being sold out, that's 26,000 people for one of the key provincial rugby fixtures, 15,000 in Castlebar, Tralee recently, 4-5,000 in Navan yesterday, over 10,000 in Cork, its the league, its bitterly cold, some lade here do nothing but criticise. Theres only 1 of the munster leinster games like that with players missing and it isnt players havign something better to do... The top players gsme time is managed and they dont play all the games over christmas/new year period as they have irish camps for 6 nations and it isnt 2 2nd string...
