Challenging our championship format is a never ending story! Hurling and football
Most team sports in the world use the same format and there's never a peak. Would it be worth looking into that?
Change can be difficult and an extremely long and laboured process. We could have something fantastic. I'd love to see it in my lifetime!

In cork and Kerry, divisional teams enter the club championship and a lot of counties enter second string club teams into the main championships.
The big thing for me is the divisional teams. It is so unfair that a hurler from Louth or Armagh will never get to play in the Liam McCarthy. The four provinces could enter a team of players from counties who are not competing in the top tier. British and overseas players can play under connacht.
Munster (1) - Kerry
Leinster (7) - Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Wicklow
Connacht (7) - Lancashire, Leitrim, London, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Warwickshire
Ulster (8) - Cavan, Derry, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Monaghan, Tyrone
Intermediate and junior club players from the big 5 in munster can be included to avoid Kerry not joined up with any county. Intermediate and junior club players from Antrim, Galway, Kilkenny etc may strengthen the provincial teams.
Group A
Carlow
Dublin
Limerick
Tipperary
Group B
Cork
Galway
Westmeath
Wexford
Group C
Antrim
Clare
Kilkenny
Waterford
Group D
Connacht
Leinster
Munster
Ulster
Top 2 in each group advance to the all-Ireland quarter finals. Players from Kerry, Wicklow, Sligo or Tyrone, if good enough, could find themselves regularly playing in all Ireland quarter-finals or further in this format.
The 3 counties who finished bottom of their group play in the relegation playoffs and bottom team is replaced by the McDonagh Champions
The McDonagh Cup can include intermediate teams from the bigger counties and the championship may look like….

The difficulty would be selection of "intermediate" teams from stronger counties. Junior A in Kilkenny, Galway, Cork would be equivalent of senior club in most of counties in lower tiers.

Granted, but I would imagine Kerry would be a match against a Kilkenny team made of intermediate club players who are not on the senior team. A Kilkenny junior team may be more compatible to play against the likes of Armagh and Roscommon in lower tiers.
I'm not saying the format should change to this but this is what the Cork championships (which are very competitive and fait) would equivalent to at inter county.
