Joe McDonagh Cup 2023

Joe McDonagh Cup round 1
Down v Kerry, Ballycran, 1pm
Offaly v Laois, Glenisk O'Connor Park, 3pm
Carlow v Kildare, Netwatch Cullen Park, 3pm

Laois and Offaly are the favourites to make the final. The Joe McDonagh Cup has received a lot of plaudits in recent years. Only last year's Munster final made the list of top games across all levels. Kerry v Offaly, Antrim v Offaly and Antrim v Kerry (final) were among the top games across all levels last year.

Its probably the GAA's most competitive competition. It winners deserves to be treated as well as the Tailteann cup which is not happening.

I'd tip Offaly based on their league performance but it's wide open to be honest

The final is live on RTÉ from Croke Park at least. This year the McDonagh finalists will have 3 weeks to prepare for the All-Ireland Preliminary Quarter-finals. The only complaint is that Offaly are unfair playing for 7 weekends in a row. There should have been a two week gap between the league finals and the start of McDonagh. There was a week off before and after Round 3 of the league. There is a weekend there to be utilised so that league finalists have two weeks to get ready for the McDonagh.

Have to agree that the McDonagh is a wonderful competition. It never seems to get the respect it deserves from the gaa imo. The lack of exposure has been obvious since the inception of the christy ring cup and has only marginally improved since the McDonagh was formed. The Tailteann cup was promoted from the start and put on a pedestal in comparison.

Don't fall asleep on Kildare. Nice team.

Would it have been possible to play the Offaly v Kildare group match as the Division 2A final, like they often do with Walsh Cup and league matches?

Thanks. Johnny Kelly, Offaly SH has stated this anomaly. We had 3 tough games, Kildare twice, and Kerry in the league. An extra week is not going to cause major disruption.

Joe McDonagh Cup round 1
Down 1-14 Kerry 1-26, Ballycran FT

Kerry have started with a win. Revenge for losing to Down in Tralee during Easter weekend last year. At home to Carlow and away to Kildare will tell a lot.

Carlow hammered Kildare today, and Offaly beat Laois by 3-19 to 1-22.

Big surprise both really. Actually the first, but perhaps not the second as Laois were very poor in league and seem to be rudderless at moment.

Carlow have a very good 1st 15. A few players would likely make most Liam Mccarthy teams.

Down 1-14 Kerry 1-26, Ballycran FT
Offaly 3-19 Laois 1-22, Glenisk O'Connor Park FT
Carlow 5-23 Kildare 0-19, Netwatch Cullen Park FT

Shocking result for Kildare. Carlow have come good in the championship yet again. Fantastic result for Offaly. Laois will be waiting in the long grass to get revenge in Croke Park.

Joe McDonagh Cup round 2
Kildare v Offaly, TBC, TBC

Joe McDonagh Cup round 2
Laois v Down, Laois Hire O'Moore Park, 2pm
Kerry v Carlow, Austin Stack Park, 2pm

Advantage Offaly going into Round 2.

Down had a good league last year. Beat Kerry in Round 1 of the McDonagh but then had to beat Meath in Round 5 to retain McDonagh status.
Kildare had a good league but how that was going to transfer into championship was unknown. How they bounce back from today will tell a lot.
