I don't agree but hope I'm wrong about the championship. I think the format gives the top counties too much of a cushion. I mean all the top counties are guareteed to be in last 16 and then with 4 groups of 4 teams. 3 teams qualify out of 4.its nearly easier qualify than not. I mean a team could lose on the provincial championship and lose two more games in the group stage and still win the All Ireland. It gives the top teams too many chan es and they have the luxury of experimenting during the championship now more than ever. On the league form so far yes Mayo look the best team in the country by far and McStay probably the manager they needed. Galway doing well too and could have beaten Mayo but thought they were poor v Donegal. However the table does nt lie.

It is a peculiar one that they have opted for 3 qualifying from a group. Most county championships with groups of 4 sees the top 2 progress.
I think the Dublin championship has a fixture format to reduce dead rubbers in the final game. The winners of Game 1 play in Game 2. The most likely scenario then is a team with 2 wins playing a team with 0 wins in Game 3. The team with 2 wins has already qualified. The team with 0 wins has been eliminated. The other game that throws in at the same time is a straight battle for the second qualifying spot.

Would an open draw of '4 groups of 4' created more jeopardy/thrown up better groups of death (but with less than 12 going through)?

Monaghan are hoping to complete yet another great escape. It'll be interesting to see how they get on. A Tyrone win over Armagh puts it in Monaghan's hands.
Louth have been the story of the league so far. It will be a remarkable achievement if they were to be promoted again.
Offaly beat Fermanagh. Fermanagh beat Down. Cavan beat Offaly. Cavan beat Down. Down can't catch Cavan or Fermanagh. Offaly need a win over Down and Cavan to beat Fermanagh.
Sligo, Leitrim, Laois and Wicklow are in the promotion hunt in Division 4.
It will be all drama on the final day of the NFL!

Fair play to Monaghan! They have survived relegation yet again! Armagh and Donegal relegated. Cavan need to get past Armagh and Donegal to make an Ulster and the All-Ireland series.

Delighted to see Fermanagh being promoted. Good win for them in Cavan.

Armagh won't be sending any bouquets to Mayo. Mayo playing a largely second string team played a big part in relegating Armagh. Mayo at full tilt would have beaten Monaghan. There's an unfairness there somewhere.

That's sorry to hear, 9 years and nothing to show for it

Well done to Oisín McConville too in managing Wicklow to promotion.

A scheduling flaw. There should be two weeks between the league finals and start of the provincial championships. If a team is safe, there is always a possibility they can field a second team. The way the cookie crumbles. It favoured Monaghan today.

Derry could win the Ulster championship easily enough by the look of it

We were well within our right to rest players today.

3 ulster final appearances including 1 win. For a population of 65,000 people and only 30 odd clubs we see staying in division 1 as an achievement. Anf some of the best footballers in the country. On the other hand, Derry have 1 ulster final win and appearances in 9 years. With a population of 110,000 and 40 clubs. I'd say that's bit of an under achievement.

This is a prime example of where round robins are incorrectly argued as being "fair" - sure, everyone plays everyone else - but, the 'just not under the same conditions' part gets glossed over.

To my mind, partial round robins where all play an incomplete equally-mixed slate of different fixtures is no less effective and it facilitates a greater number of teams taking part.

As an example, if you split an enlarged 12-team Div 1 into three equally-ranked groups, where all play teams from outside their group instead, they'd play 8 games, in lieu of an 11-game round robin.

In 2024, the UEFA Champions League is going to a new format - 8 matches per team, contributing to a combined 36-team table, with no groups - let's see how it goes, jury is still out.

How so, Mayo didn't relegate Armagh, Tyrone did that job. Remember the 4 red cards last year, pay back. Maybe if they could control their own players they would be better off. Nothing wrong with O' Neill except discipline. Haven't been a good team from the early 0s. Well done Monaghan, I thought Tyrone blew it for yous last week.

If Armagh beat Tyrone, they wouldn't have been relegated. Depending on favours from others is only asking for trouble.

Yes, but did Monaghan 'beat' Mayo (or a lesser opponent) - and with their reliance on a Tyrone victory as well - they apparently were "not asking for trouble".

They were, but asking for trouble doesn't mean you get it. It's means you could get it..
