Replying To Wexfordgaa:  "I was told gleeson Dessie prunty and de burca were all out for start of the league. Do ya have a team? Good for a young team to get exposure against a strong team"
I didn't get a Waterford teamsheet. But there was a Waterford guy up for the match with his girlfriend in front of us and he said he was surprised to see so many starters playing. De burca definitely played in the 1st half. Austin Gleeson was on in the 2nd. Maybe the Conor who was in the fullback line that the Waterford guy on the line was shouting at was Conor Gleeson or Ryan. But he had the build of Prunty. They all had helmets on and their bench/sideline was the other side of the pitch from us. Think he said Foran and Montgomery and Lyons were playing also but I didn't write anything down. Maybe Kevin Mahony? They looked a very strong team. And big compared to our lads.

Not sure either will learn much as a result. From a Wexford perspective whilst on the one hand it's great to see so many guys being looked at I wonder how much is learned by starting so many inexperienced players at the same time especially when the opposition are so strong."
From the younger players point of view it will have shown them the level they will need to get up to over the next few years especially as regards S and C and speed and time on the ball, or lack of at the top level. In fairness to all of them there was no going backwards in them. It was strange to see so many rows in a challenge game tbh!
And from our teamwork point of view the more games different players play with eachother the better they will get to know each others style of play. As in what way lads are likely to break, turn or run. Whether a teammate is likely to break right or left in different situations that kind of thing. Handy when playing a shorter game and running the ball forwards with a lad on your shoulder. Especially for lads from different clubs who are 2 years apart and wouldn't have played with eachother all the way up through intercounty underage. With the speed intercounty is played at these days you really need to know where your teammates will be in a second or 2, not where they are now.
And for the forwards they need to know where the backs are likely to play a ball so they can either run in behind or feint and come back out in front depending which of our backs is playing the ball in. They have to be travelling to where the ball will be before it is played in as the ball will travel there faster than they will especially with a low hard stick pass. We need to get our handpasses faster and flatter also, less easy to deflect or intercept.
Also for all the backs playing on those lads and watching the tape back might show some of the same things in the forwards they were playing against. Most intercounty forwards are 2 sided these days but most favour one or the other at the same time. They might give signals which way they are likely to turn also. Footwork, shoulder or head movement etc.
Darragh and his management will also be able to look at that kind of stuff, and know how different tactical setups develop as the play develops. Some of the stuff Davy tried likely won't appear in a championship game but some of it might all the same.

That would be understandable 2 managers approaching it differently, Waterford had 2 Munster League games on Jan 3rd and 15th so probably wanted a pre league tune up, we had the 3 Walsh Cup games and the Kilkenny game with everything around it wasn't a normal Walsh Cup game. Every Liam McCarthy and Joe Mcdonagh team were playing last weekend except Waterford and Clare who played the week prior so really the only way Waterford might have had a game last weekend if they arranged a game against 1 of the Fitzgibbon Cup teams.

So the Waterford guy was right. That's close to championship matchday panel.

Not 100 percent sure of order and all the names as I didn't have a team sheet but in no particular order from memory Cian Byrne in goal, Conor Firman, Eoin Murphy, Simon Donohue, Kyle Scallan, Gavin Bailey, Jack Doran, Mike Kelly, Conall Clancy, Conall Flood, Tucker Kinsella, Rory Higgins, Mac, and can't remember/don't know who started in the other cornerback and corner forward positions. I think that was the starting team as I saw it. Ian Carthy, Niall Murphy, Cian Byrne from Fethard, Joe Coleman, Joe O Connor, Mogie, Josh Shiel, Cathal Dunbar and Ross Banville all came on I think along with a few others during the 2nd half although some only got the last 10 minutes. Probably around 25 lads in all. I was having to keep an eye on 3 children and was talking to a very interesting and knowledgeable lad I met from Cushinstown also at the same time! Most of last year's championship starters didn't feature at all. I can't say anyone was overly impressive as the team as a whole was outmatched. Different lads did OK but we weren't set up to counter Waterford as mostly we lined up for 15 on 15 and most of the lads kept to their own area of the pitch. Jack Doran was busy but often muscled out of it, Tucker, Flood and Clancy got on a fair bit of ball but shooting was rusty as Waterford put our lads under savage pressure and turned them over time and again. Higgins looked a little better and didn't seem to be fouled as much, Mac looked busy too in fairness and good on frees when he took over from Tucker. Dunbar looked the best of our lads for matching Waterford physically and got on a good bit of ball in the 2nd half. Carthy covered alot of ground on both sides of the pitch when he came on at halftime although he lined up for puckouts at left wing back, the backs in general had a very busy evening, not sure who was in goal in the 2nd half but some puckouts went astray and we seemed to lack anyone to catch them, Joe Coleman was good on frees and popped up around the pitch after he replaced Mac. Noone looked dreadful in fairness and they all put a good effort in although some of the lads who came on at the very end miscontrolled a few balls etc as could be expected from a lad who only got 5 or 10 minutes on the pitch.

Last year there was 50 in training and cut to 35-40 between the league and Walsh Cup so probably same again, Kilkenny doing something similar from what I'm hearing.

I heard there were eight or nine let go at the weekend, but I didn't hear who.

I remember last year, there was a squad announcement on Facebook or the Wexford GAA website or somewhere like that, around the time the League started. Maybe there'll be something similar this year.

Any word on who has made the final panel? Hopefully the young lads who haven't made it take what they've learned and improve again this year
