Replying To hunting:  "Wexford were missing, they full back, corner back, centre back and 2 of their best forwards in Byrne and Pepper. Last night showed what difference a free taker can make. The galway number 9 landed frees from everywhere and we missed 2 or 3 straight forward ones. Nothing between does team, but it was a disappointing result for Wexford. Now rossiter needs to get his best team on the pitch and that includes in my opinion starting both Pepper and Cillian Byrne."
Pepper not in form

Replying To ExiledInWex:  "Good response from the 20's last night.
They were woegious v Dublin and could have capitulated before half time, with the doubts after the Dublin match still in the back of their mids. But dug in and showed fight they didn't v Dublin.
A strange competition overall, but probably a good format for developing a team since there's little or no "risk" so to speak.
What happened Oisin Pepper from making his senior debut to not making u20 team? Is he injured?"
No out of form

Yeah, I was thinking the same. No mention of an injury in the media or by management. Surely he would be an automatic choice if available.
We really never looked like winning last night . Okay we were short a few players and fought to the end which was commendable but Galway were without some key players as well.
Anyway we're still there and with a full team for the remainder of the championship who knows.

Replying To beano:  "Again, you don't seem to understand my initial point.

In those scenarios you listed above, there was a limit to how many teams qualified from the groups (in Wexford's case, top two into final, third in qualifiers. Club: top four through to QFs). There is no provision where EVERYONE goes through regardless. In fact, the bottom team in the club group has the jeopardy of relegation for their lack of form.

My gripe is that there is a lack of cut and thrust because of the system, albeit Wexford did show plenty of heart in trying to overcome their deficit last night. But imagine telling a chap, and it surely has happened, that you are coming in tonight only because Player A is deemed better than his peers and may be used by the seniors. It could be said player's only championship start in the grade for his county and its reduced to a glorified practise match. Championship competitions should have blood and hair flying from day one, not shadow boxing for over half of the games. Its a flaw in many of the associations competitions. Ironically, the system may have helped Wexford though as we might be bottom ourselves now (don't know the breakdown of the score differences)."
You're mixing up the two things now.

Point about Wexford beating Kilkenny and those other teams beating Castletown was in relation to your claim we'd be complaining if we beat Galway in U20, but competition structure ended up allowing Galway to go further than us regardless.

Point about groups of three in club championships in 2020 and '21, and everybody going through to some stage of knock-out anyway, was in relation to your complaint about structure of this year's U20 inter-county hurling. I happen to agree it's a bit of a strange one, but am still wondering if you felt the same about the club round-robins in those years when everyone went through, even if they were hammered in both round-robin matches.

Anyway, yes, our U20s will finish bottom of group if Kilkenny beat Dublin later today. Strange that both final round matches not being played at same time, but hey, we've already agreed that this year's U20 is a bit strange anyway

Galway were definitely short 2 main players in Kileen and Liam Collins, don't know if they were short many more, were we short 5 starters in my view.

Feels more like a league game type of weather up here.

Galway didn't win a league game at home this year, perhaps an omen?

Excellent start with the two goals and encouraging to be level at half-time considering we lost Chin and Reck before throw-in (well certainly the latter). But a worrying drop-off thereafter. Don't know what Mac was doing with the penalty, but that miss was the turning point. Rory or Jacko should have taken it. At the end of the day, they scored twice as many points as us despite us spooking them early on.

Thought O'Hanlon was our best defender by a mile, kept Whelan quiet. It was the worst Reck has played since emerging as a starter and got destroyed by Niland, though I felt we left too much space up front for him to exploit. Devitt was pushed forward without affecting the game too much, and Foley held his own for his first start.

Hearne and Dee got through a lot of work in the first half but faded thereafter, and Mogie was our most consistent forward and took his goal very well. Dunbar hit two nice points and Jacko was good off the bench- I also felt that first wide was a point. I simply do not understand why we played ROC so deep though especially when we were already down one marquee forward. I get he is our most natural gifted player and has everything in his locker, but Galway were surely delighted to see him in a withdrawn role.

Thought the referee made a few questionable calls against us, in the first half especially, but I didn't expect to emerge with a win over there either. We still get buffeted off the ball too easily but at least our free-taking wasn't an issue today.

Next weekend is the more important game of our first two though. Antrim had a decent draw with Dublin but are definitely harder to beat up there- get Chin and Damo back, put in a performance over the 70 and I expect us to win.

Why do wexford have such problems converting penalties? We may not have won anyhow but it would have been a real boost if it had gone in. Surely Rory or Jack could have hit it. Conor missed his last pen for wexford too. And why was Rory positioned so deep in the 2nd half when we needed scores. What was Egan thinking of.
