Louth are probably the 2nd best team in the Province, or 2nd equal with Meath. Westmeath are good too. Hopefully we do better than we did in Navan last year. I think we will.

4.19 with just 1 wide is impressive Stmunnsriver (Wexford) - Posts: 2890 - 07/04/2024 17:15:43 2536229 Link 0 |
Westmeath ??? That aged well !! Seriously, Dublin are so far ahead of the rest of Leinster that 2nd place in the province is an open competition. Yellaman (Wexford) - Posts: 126 - 07/04/2024 17:21:39 2536230 Link 0 |
Think we had more than 1 wide tbh. Think we mightve had 1 drop short also, and their keeper and a defender made a save or 2. But yes it was excellent shooting.

Yep, we played some really nice football, actually played better football against the wind than with it. Carlow were very very poor though being the only caveat. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1427 - 07/04/2024 17:33:37 2536235 Link 0 |
True. Some shock. I got home in time to see the end of Cavan upsetting Monaghan on the TV.

I taught we had more too but the stats from Wexford GAA on social media have us down for only 1 wide compared to 14 for Carlow.

In fairness I'd still have Westmeath down as a better side than Wicklow , that was a big surprise.

Well done Wexford & best of luck v Louth. Please don't get carried away with that result today. I'm watching Carlow a long time & that is the worst ever performance I have seen. Embarrassing. A Div 4 team should not be beating another Div 4 team like that. carlo (Carlow) - Posts: 228 - 07/04/2024 18:33:36 2536280 Link 0 |
We won't be getting carried away. We will still be a div4 team next year. Louth will be a div 2 team. Last time we played a div2 side in championship Meath gave us a schooling in Navan in the TC.

Yeah not sure what's going on up the road but ye looked in total disarray today, everything seemed off, body language from the off looked shocking, even the reaction of I think your number 7 with being taken off. Whatever it is I hope ye sort it out, best of luck. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1427 - 07/04/2024 19:05:11 2536314 Link 0 |
A football double bill in Portlaoise next Sunday, but the times don't make sense. According to the Leinster gaa website, the wicklow/ kildare game is at 1.45, and wex / Louth at 3pm......... Yellaman (Wexford) - Posts: 126 - 07/04/2024 20:50:31 2536356 Link 0 |
Read somewhere else our game is at 4 which would make sense, surprised 3 games in Portlaoise next weekend given the pressure pitches are under with recent weather taught 1 would have been fixed for Tullamore or Carlow.

Fantastic score to get but let's not get carried away. Magpie2 (Wexford) - Posts: 386 - 08/04/2024 07:03:18 2536436 Link 0 |
Yeah Louth are a good team, well drilled with Ger Brennan building on the work done by Mickey Harte. It would be a shock result if we pull off a win the next day in reality but we have nothing to lose so who knows. If we are competitive for a long period of the game against a quality division 2 team then that's a positive in my book. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1427 - 08/04/2024 08:47:00 2536448 Link 0 |
I actually dug out the Dom Williams "Bible" last night to look that up. According to that book, our biggest winning margins, in order: 2010 - 25 pts - Wexford 4-22, London 0-9 (Ruislip) 1897 - 25 pts - Wexford 2-24, Carlow 0-5 (Jones' Road) * 2024 - 23 pts - Wexford 4-19, Carlow 0-8 (Wexford Park) 1944 - 22 pts - Wexford 4-12, Kilkenny 0-2 (Barrett's Park, New Ross - now O'Kennedy Park) 1917 - 20 pts - Wexford 6-4, Louth 0-2 (Wexford Park) * 24 points would be a massively unlikely score in 1897. Wouldn't surprise me if that's a typo and Wexford's actual score that day was either 2-2 or 2-4. As I've pointed out before, Dom's "Bible" is a great piece of work, but it's not infallible. For example, there's a man I know who's listed as having played for Wexford in the 1973 All-Ireland U21 Hurling Final, despite how he was 23 years old at the time and actually hurling for London in the All-Ireland Intermediate Hurling Final that year instead. I'll be travelling up more in hope than expectation. Division 2 is a fair step up. What I noticed after I got home from the Park while watching Cavan, and last year watching our game against Meath, was that the speed and timing of their runs off the shoulder, particularly when attacking the space inside the defensive perimeter 40 yards out from goal, is much faster than what we would be used to facing. Speed in transitioning also, though we have improved hugely that way ourselves over the last 5 games, particularly when going forwards. The way we have played in those games will mean Louth won't underestimate us either, which in fairness to our players and management is a right they have earned. Though maybe our chances of an upset are a little diminished as a result. We can still win this game all the same.

Have to say the pitch looked in great condition yesterday considering the recent weather. TerribleFootwork (Wexford) - Posts: 1760 - 08/04/2024 13:57:55 2536593 Link 0 |
