Derry V Galway

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Finally caught the breath after a rollercoaster weekend.

This is a tasty one. Both sides had very contrasting semi finals with Galway just coming out the right end of war and Derry winning untested.

Expecting just as tough a battle here but I am hopeful that after two weeks now of heavy focus on defending the high ball, Galway will have enough at the other end to outscore Derry.

Another games the bookies can barely split them, with Derry just favourites. Hopefully all the media and neutrals alike hype the Derry train up and tip them similar to what they did with Armagh.

To be fair to Derry, they well deserve the favourites tag after that demolition of a quality Clare side. A number of Clare lads I know that know their football very well had them tipped to beat Derry but couldn't believe what they witnessed in how Derry totally bossed that game and had vastly improved since the league.
If our 4-11 to 0-12 win up in Derry back in March is in our heads, and we think this'll necessarily be something the same, they'll very quickly put us back in our box. I'm sure Galway team and Mgmt realise we need to prepare for a Derry that are operating at a much higher tempo now. Slaughneil's McGuigan is some player and is on fire, 1-7 from play in a MOTM display against the Banner. He was top scorer in ulster this year. Conor Glass would be in any teams engine room. He's some player and athlete. Heron and Cassidy are lethal if they're shown any space. Rogers, McKaigue, Doherty, McKinless all solid at the back. This'll be some battle again.

The Derry camp won't be paying any attention to any hype. Should be a cracking game !

if galway can get over all that went on in the armagh game i think they will win . derry are a fine team but i dont think they are as good as armagh . it will come down to what mental and physical shape galway are in

Great. Another 50/50 game. Just what my heart needed.

Expecting another absolute cracker of a game.

'Hup Galway!

Galway hammered Derry up in Owen beg in the league..
The ulster championship slightly overrated in fairness, and then they bet a poor Clare side yet they are been put out there as a unbeatable juggernaut... I feared Armagh more...

Depends how many suspensions if any Galway get, should be another great contest and a great opportunity for both teams to get to the All Ireland final,
Whichever team wins they will have a great chance in the final, I think Dublin will beat Kerry in the other semi final. Can't wait, could go to extra time again, that close contest win will have done Galway a power of good.

It's great to see a somewhat novel semi final between two counties on the rise. Was it 2001 they last met in a semi final? I remember Matty Clancy scoring a late goal to settle it back then and Galway went on to win the whole thing.

It's a very hard match to call. Derry remind me so much of Donegal in 2011 with their fitness and attitude. In fact they're probably closer to the 2012 version come to think of it. Their attacking game plan is more advanced than ours was in 2011.

Galway have made big strides this year too. Like Derry, there are always quality footballers in Galway and PJ seems to have discovered the right mix. They're still learning as they go. I said it on another thread that Shane Walsh's ill-advised cross field ball the other day weirdly might benefit Galway in the long run. If they had comfortably seen the Armagh match out and won by 5 points they'd have been favourites for the semi - a dangerous enough position to be in against a team like Derry.

I think if Galway can see out Derry's initial blitzkrieg and avoid conceding goals they'll win by a few points. I think they have more of a scoring threat overall. If there are no goals I'd fancy Galway to out-point Derry. Then again, Derry's ferocious appetite and relentlessness is very hard to contain. If they do raise two or three green flags it will be very difficult for Galway.

Best of luck to both teams - hopefully a cracker is in store.

Another very tough one to call. Derry look like they have something very special with great players in every line. I dont think the league fixture has any bearing but at the same time I think Clare made Derry look very very good.

I expect that their half back line will be working a lot harder in their own half than they have had to before, might be a day for high quality long range shooting to see us over the line.

Hopefully lots of Westmeath in for the first match so it looks like tonnes of Maroon!

Roscommon beat us twice in the league. It means nothing . Derry are battle hardened and have won ulster which is no easy task. I fancy Galway but just about

Are ye saying if Derry do win it's because Galway weren't mentally ready.

This is a mouth watering game. Derry should be a better organised and fitter prospect than Armagh. Galway have the forwards but Derry have some great man markers. Who do Roger's and McKeigue mark? If Walsh and Comer are kept quiet can Finnerty and the others step up again. Galway won't have faced a defence like this yet in the championship. You could argue Derry haven't faced a forward line like this yet either. If Galway don't tighten up further at the back and fall asleep at the wheel I think they'll be punished but I'm sure PJ has it top of his agenda.

Galway are as weak as water in the last 15 minutes of games. I am expecting a comfortable Derry victory. I don't mind who wins this game and would love to see either of these teams winning Sam. However I fear the winner will come from the other semi final

I dont see it being a cracker, Derry will know that Galway are a whole different kettle of fish than Clare, I think it will be nowhere near what we got last weekend, Derry wont rack up 5 13 , and Galway wont get anywhere near the room they got v Armagh, this is a very focused Derry outfit ,i think theyll nick it ,but only just

We have a better record against all northern teams in the championship bar Tyrone so I expect us to keep that going the next day.Its Kerry and the dubs we struggle badly to beat.

Don't you know we have replaced Mayo as the most entertaining football team.whats the fun in winning by 6pts when we can give everyone drama and heart scarves!

What really boils me is people saying if they stop Comer, Walsh and Conroy they stop Galway. Plain lazy stuff. The eyes looking on national television on Sunday were able to dispel that myth with coming of ages performances across the park from Finnerty, Tierney, McDaid, Kelly and others.

We have the momentum and so do Derry, it's going to be some battle.
