I'm not too sure how accurate you are on this one - and I have no axe to grind whether it be Republican or Democrat. The Americans were still in Iraq since the Gulf war and as such became targets as occupiers in the rise of ISIS. The international coalition was cobbled together and sent in to tackle them. Would the west be a safer place if ISIS had been allowed to establish its Caliphate across swaythes of Iraq, Lybia and Syria ? and set up a regime resembling that currently in power in Afghanistan. And allow Syria continue with its displacement of the Kurds. Maybe so, I personally don't think so. I try to take an overview of all that went on in the Middle East over the past 50 plus years. And, the Republican party are at least as supportive of Israel as the Democrats, if not more so. Just read up on what went on during Trumps term. Mr Netanyahu played the Donald and his son in law like a violin.

Are you taking about Iraq 1 (when Bush Snr went in) or Iraq 2 (when Bush Jr went in)? Either way,I think you'll find they were both Republicans. It was also Bush Jr in Afghanistan. Still a republican by the way. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5212 - 18/09/2024 05:01:55 2570493 Link 0 |

What do you all make of the new Champions League format? I must admit I'm finding it hard to have any interest in it, which is crazy because it's essentially the highest standard of football on the planet supposedly. I watched a bit of City Inter. It was entertaining enough in parts but lacking in intensity. Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 9527 - 20/09/2024 14:48:25 2571000 Link 0 |
I looked at most of the Arsenal one last night and thought that Arsenal didn't put a lot in to it. Probably with an eye to Sunday v City. Looked like a case to me of " don't get injured and don't lose".

It's horrendous. This new system is so boring and predictable as we can all name most of the 8 clubs finishing in the top 8 and most of the teams finishing in the bottom 12. Last seasons format was way better as there was a far higher chance of the massive clubs not making it to the knockout stage but now there is no jeopardy

No seeding was super because it threw up first or second round ties like Forest v Liverpool back in the day, and Milan v Real Madrid, and gave an opportunity to so called weaker teams to navigate a way to the final

A tiny bike shed that costs €340k and now a security hut costing €1.5million and a children's hospital that has overrun by about 5 times it's original cost…and will not open for another 3 years…if ever…This country must be run by the most inept government that ever existed…? Name those teams.Seriously though if you take Celtic for example ,if they get a good run they might be fighting for a top 8 position and at worse they should be fighting to stay out of the bottom group. If they stay in the middle group they still will have a chance in something like our own preliminary Q/Fs.Give it a chance.I thnk it will be very interesting for a lot of clubs..We all know the big clubs will usually come to the top at the end of the day no matter what system you have. The chances of the likes Notts Forrest winning the competition nowadays are nil, not because of the system but due to the enormous gap in finances that exist now.

Yeah it's funny hearing some elite players and managers talk about the excessive number of games they're having to play. But when it comes to reducing the schedule you can be damn sure it won't be CL or PL games they're talking about. It'll be FA Cup replays, Carabao Cup etc (which smaller clubs down the pyramid rely on). Players lower in the ladder often rely on appearance bonuses to supplement their wage so they don't complain about the number of matches. The TV deal stuff is interesting. Even taking a small sample size like readers of this forum, I'd be very surprised if everyone here legitamately watches PL and CL games via Sky/Premier Sports subscriptions. How is it that the TV companies continue to pay vast amounts of money for "exclusive" rights to games? Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 9527 - 26/09/2024 12:18:14 2571923 Link 0 |
Football has gone boring and predictable in general. The money involved these days has completely ruined it.

Could get very boring alright by the 6th round with some teams guaranteed a quarter final. UEFA robbed the All Ireland quarter final qualifier rounds idea! Hopefully there'll be a bit of a buzz around rounds 7 and 8 where lesser known teams could scrape into qualifiers playing weakened bigger clubs. There was more chance of the big teams, top seeds, reaching knockout rounds in last year's format, same format that was there for years. Play 3 teams home and away and the lowest seed in round 3 and 4. Most teams were guaranteed last 16 after 5 group games. No groups this season, more jeopardy and chances of upsets. Hopefully anyway!

Are you still able to watch Premier League games on a Saturday afternoon in the south. I don't think you can in the North. Over here nearly all the pubs by me used to show whatever game the majority wanted on a Saturday PM. I think Sky won a Court case blocking transmissions with the threat of a massive fine for the owners if they continued to show them. I think the interest has lessened to a degree but as a previous poster mentioned a lot of people I know are using other means of gaining access. I remember being in a pub by Croke Park in 2010, Sat PM after doing the tour of the ground and there was a game on. And hardly a soul in the place either.
