Replying To RHF:  "Who are the older players who are causing the problems in the selection of new management ?"
A lot of teams who were successful have had this problem at the end of their lifespan. Problem here appears to be a weak county board afraid of offending lads who undoubtedly are v popular with a lot of supporters but life moves on.

All they seem to be doing is holding back the development of young players in Monaghan and any half decent manager worth his salt will stay well clear of the circus.

I've seen him coach in Dublin on a few occasions. Thought he was excellent.

Counihan was overlooked by the players for lack of experience. Now we appoint a manager from outside the county with no senior intercounty experience as a manager and no idea of players/Monaghan football.

Couldn't write this stuff.

V strange alright. Who knows could be huge success but you would have to wonder what the county board really thinks about mgers inside the county and the long term plan. Its like an appointment one of the div 3/4 leinster counties would make. I heard philly mcmahon say he got a call recently about county mger vacancy wonder was that monaghan also ?

I will hold judgment on Ger Brennan, but what was done on Mark Counihan is nothing short of disgraceful.

We need to stop thinking Dublin has the answers and hire someone closer to home. Can not believe I agree with TrueBlood for once!

No idea of Monaghan players? He is the Head of GAA in UCD and has been for the past 7 years.

This give him an excellent understanding of young players in Monaghan through the third level competitions, he will be coming in with a lot more knowledge of young players in the county than Hackett or Sherlock would have had.

It's a solid appointment.
Proven all Ireland winner club and county, played in a team that got rid of egos and bad habits over time, monaghan very like this currently. Head of GAA in UCD, big advantage. Is manager of moorefield and had been cóach of carlow. Good appointment, big players would have walked all over on Counihan. Give him 3-4 years.

Head of GAA in UCD, great, how many players have we currently in UCD? Within the current squad…..zero. Great point, well made.

How did his time at Carlow and Moorefield work out?? Hardly anything to write home about. Very unflattering reports coming out of moorefield who were just knocked out of Kildare championship.

This will be a 2term flop.

I generally try to give a new manager a chance but i gotta say this looks like a panic appointment. Reminds me of the colm coyle one. The 5 all ireland medals nonsense all over again...

Can I just simply say. I think Counihan and his backroom should've been given the chance to do the job. Would've been a great brand new fresh start. Two quality Monaghan football men who've come through the ranks in the local game and two very good outside coaches as well. When are we going to start believing in our own coaches, who are as good as any in the country!

Brennan smells like a PR appointment. Big name to appease either players or sponsors.

For me there are plenty of very good coaches within the Monaghan county who would be well able for the job of senior football manager.

Also, does anyone know why the hurling county finals between Blayney, Carrick, Inniskeen and Clonibret were played in Truagh? Surely for supporters Aghnamullen/Blackhill/Toome/Cremartin would have been better?

Part of an effort to encourage hurling in Truagh / north of the county?

Why are the players calling the shots - seems ludicrous.

Correct unpopular among die hard moorefield supporters

Training sessions early morning and evening

Long ball into full forward line

It's military approach he has

Did you see his style of play in the minors and 20s? Absolutely awful stuff. He has no experience of coaching senior players in club never mind a county senior team. Im not surprised that the players felt they deserved better, at least Brennan has went into club management with a few clubs and has inter county set up experience too.

We have to remember we are a division 1 team with talent coming through to stay there and push on, all this talk of going down the divisions is rubbish. Why would players settle for an inexperienced county manager just to give him experience and satisfy clubs, they are just right to demand the best.
