Fantastic display by Westmeath today all over the park-Jack Smith was superb and what about Kevin Maguire who made some brilliant forward runs.Jack Cooneys game plan worked a treat and retaining 100% of our kick outs was huge-also scoring 3-19 from play -every player who was on the pitch today deserves huge praise.Bring on Cavan.!!

Fantastic display by Westmeath today but Offaly were poor. Cavan will be a different game. Whilst a fantastic team effort a few players really stood out - Jack Smith, Maguire, James Dolan, Sam McCartan, JH and Lorcan Dolan were superb. Solid defensive display, John Keane's influence was all over some of the marking/tackling. Kick-outs worked a treat and were the platform for a fantastic attacking display. With a bit more accuracy in the first half, we could have shot the lights out. There are areas for improvement before the next day which will be a more physical contest. Overall, a great attacking display and hopefully another big performance left in the team.

Tailteann Cup or not, beating Offaly (especially so comprehensively) will always bring a smile to my face, what a fantastic performance by the lads. A cricket score, and could have been a lot more if chances were taken in the first half. If there is a criticism or concern going into the final its the scores we've shipped at the other end against both Carlow and Offaly, we'll have to tighten things up a bit for Cavan or they will punish us.
Ive seen a couple of posts saying Jack hasnt brought the lads on at all in 3 years, I cant agree with that and wouldnt have prior to this game, regardless of the result. No matter how well or poorly we've been going under him I can always see a gameplan and a togetherness amongst the lads, and this years he's put together an All Star backroom team there to complement it all.
John Keanes name was all over the tenacity of the defensive work yesterday, and no better man than Dessie to have looking after our forwards. A WESTMEATH backroom team leading the county to an All Ireland final!!

Super win, Offaly very disappointing. My Offaly friends tell me that they were missing 9 regulars between covid, long and short term injuries. They seemed to struggle with the roaming roles of Heslin and OToole in particular. Anyway, all we can do is beat what's in front of us and the team did it in style. Pity it's 3 weeks to final as club championships will be impacted. 2 best teams left in it as predicted by many. Cavan a big team particularly down the middle at midfield, 11 and 14.

This narrative from Offaly about losing so much to injury is a load of BS. Granted, Niall Darby's injury was very unfortunate for him and the team but it can't be an excuse like you are hearing come from them even before a ball was thrown in and this talk of sickness in the camp during the week sounds like an excuse. There is no way they were missing nine regular players. Offaly after their u20 success last year blew that group of young lads as the second coming of Christ and suddenly thought they were back at the top table of football. Offaly since the 90's are a division 4 team bar a two or three years where in fairness to John Maughan he got them organised and up to division 2. The narrative around Offaly about Maughan since Sunday and even before that shows what you are dealing with from Offaly supporters getting out of control. The expectations they are putting on those young lads will ruin them. I know we haven't had any underage success but that "great" Offaly team only got over us in Mullingar last year and there wasn't too much between us talent wise. A better management team in their case was a big factor for their success last year and I would be confident a good number of our lads will play Senior county over a longer period due to not being burned out too young and having the weight of a totally unrealistic fan base put on their shoulders

Good to see league finals fixed for this weekend. Surely the county players will be allowed to play. Robbie Forde is Moate's best player, he won't be starting Tailteann final, either will Ger Egan or Nigel Harte, only Jamie Gonoud, in div 1 David Giles didn't feature last Sunday and could do with an outing before final. Jonathan Lynam likewise as he looks short of confidence. Kevin O' Sullivan could do with an outing. Still two weeks until Tailteann final.

It's in the Offaly make up to overreact to any defeat in either code by Westmeath. That's due to their astounding success in both codes from 1970 to 2000, 7 Senior All Irelands an awesome achievement, however times have changed significantly in the past 15-20 years, we're better than them in both codes and by a fair distance. That's been the case for quite a while, Offaly supporters struggle with the new reality. Brian Gavin interviewed John Maughan after match on Sunday and began with a raft of excuses for their failure to be remotely competitive, Maughan to his credit put Gavin in his place, Maughan said the stronger, better, more skilful side deservedly won and he had no excuses. The fact Offaly have more than their fair share of national media figures feeds into the idea they're better than they are. Pat Nolan, Kevin Egan, Duignan etc all focus on how poor Offaly were without having the magnanimity to praise an excellent Westmeath performance.

He didn't start last Sunday Mick and it's unlikely he'll start final. Who would you drop? I think he's very unlucky not to be starting as he's been excellent but Jack Smith in particular, Kevin Maguire and Jamie G were excellent on Sunday and half back line impressed also. James Dolan is a big game player, Wallace was outstanding going forward, defensively a bit suspect but certainly will play and Sam McCartan has been our best player all year, David Lynch excelled in his man marking role.

Harte was dropped last day to allow lynch to pick up mcanmee. I'd say harte will start the next day where I'd say Lynam might be dropped.
Westmeath scored 3-22 but conceded 2-16 against a rather poor person offaly side so that will have to be looked at if there to beat Cavan for sure.
As regards to league finals I think If one county player is allowed play for there clubs at the weekend wheter he starts or comes on for the county every player who's team is in a final should be allowed play respective league final no matter what division .

I echo that Mick. An outstanding club footballer who featured in Garrycastle's successes over many years and always was consistently good. More importantly, Enda was a total gentleman, tough but fair on the field but a fantastic guy off the pitch.

Deepest sympathy to all Enda's Family.A great servant to Garrycastle and anyone who was in Limerick in 99 will never forget it.
On another note the person who comes blatatantly out looking for a named player to be dropped is no Westmeath supporter. These lads give their lives up for our entertainment and yes their ambition but as amateurs deserve our respect not scorn.

Really sad news to hear of Enda's passing. He made a wonderful contribution to Garrycastle and Westmeath gaa. His efforts brought wonderful enjoyment to many people. As previous contributors have said a serious competitor on the pitch and a gentleman of it.

There were a few calling for Cooney's head after the Kildare game. They have gone very quiet now. Edman78 where are you?

Will county players be playing? Big involvement in both Div 1/2 finals.
