Poor venue selection for a lot of the games so far . Fixture makers job is to encourage people to attend games by having them at the most suitable venues in saying that I think they done a better job at scheduling this weekends games. 4 out of the 6 senior games in Cusack and few good double headers to look forward to.

Yeah that's a funny one. What's the logic there? There are so many Clubs with great facilities now so they are spoilt for choice and can see no reason for this other than it is an error by someone. Meridian (Westmeath) - Posts: 655 - 07/08/2024 08:04:55 2564115 Link 0 |

Interesting weekend of games Mountlin (Westmeath) - Posts: 59 - 08/08/2024 09:28:10 2564221 Link 0 |
My reasoning is that Caulry have to win, they have been unlucky not to get anything from their first two games, they were winning both of them with not long to go in each. Maguire is back. St. Lomans will either be at 70% or 100% as they normally are in the group stages so at 70% they can be caught out. Of course if they are firing now after the Tang scare it's game over, but Caulry can frustrate them like Tang did, it's game on. Kinnegad are on the decline, I was at both games. They cannot afford to be anything only better than last year to contest this championship, and they aren't. Athlone are on the up. This is Athlones chance. Tpass are now my favourites to qualify for the semi final automatically, alongside st. Lomans. Playing strong running football. Very Physical men. Let's see how it all plays out. Not easily no, very sluggish performance. Tpass missed the world go chances that day. Tpass also missed a lot of chances against Caulry too but they are playing very good football and I'm not saying they're world beaters but they are my top to finish this group strong. Kinnegad so laboured in their play and build up, rootless up front, I'm shocked at how poor they've been when I expected them to come back with a vengeance after being beaten last year. And it isn't just early days, they are in a very dangerous spot now in this group. An Athlone win puts them under serious pressure.

At least one person thought that Tyrrellspass were remotely competitive versus Kinnegad!!!! No one else in the park that evening thought so, including fervent Tyrrellspass supporters!! Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1884 - 08/08/2024 12:32:31 2564255 Link 0 |
I agree Kinnegad are not as good as last year but what your saying is rubbish. Tpass looked like a junior team againist Kinnegad constantly kicking ball away and not looking anyway likely to break them down with Kinnegad also missing a lot could have easily won by more. Athlone are better then Tpass this year and could give kinnegad good game, i think kinnegad will push on from this game for the year and compete if they win or give up on it like in 2022 if they loose. Tang will beatTpass Ayardout (Westmeath) - Posts: 14 - 08/08/2024 14:14:22 2564270 Link 0 |
Caulry have to win but havent shown anything good enough from their first two games to suggest they can upset Lomans Im afraid. Bad luck is no excuse for failing to score for 26 minutes. If Kinnegad are in decline then Tpass are in rapid decline (enter Mick ) . Tpass fitness looked nowhere near Kinnegads level a few weeks ago, I mustve been at a different game than you. Tpass havent the stuff coming through to restablish themselves as contenders just yet. I do agree that Athlone are the big improvers, theyre coming again which can only be good for Westmeath football to have themselves and Shamrocks back strong. They huffed and puffed their way thru B last year and will be targeting Kinnegad. That will tell where Athlone are really at.

Dessie Dolan has resigned as senior football manager. Decent managerial spell bringing Westmeath to division 2 and noteworthy performances in the All Ireland series in tough groups both years. Leinster championship displays a disappointment. Thoughts on who should replace him? Not an easy task facing next manager with age profile of squad, retirements and division 2 next year. That's very very disappointing if true and I would take it as a sign that he doesn't see the talent there to bring us any further than he has. As regards a successor, I just don't know. I don't see any natural successor there on Dessie's management ticket for the job so we'd have to go outside the County. Not plugging any of these but just listing those recently available - Paddy Christie just left Longford, could Kieran Donaghy be tempted to dip his toe in the water on his own, Glenn Ryan, Mickey Harte, Andy Moran to name a few. I'd rather a Westmeath man though as i do think we are in for some lean years ahead and i'd rather someone who'se heart was in it than some journeyman. Wasn't a fan at the time of the appointment but have to say he did well overall. I think if possible we should look internally but I'm not sure there's anybody really putting their hand up. If we have to go external I can't imagine we have the funds for a top manager. Whoever it is has a difficult task to stay in division 2 with the turnover of players we have. I can't see Heslin or Maguire starting again with a new manager.

It's not fair to speculate as to reasons why he's stepped down, particularly by stating reason you did. He has a very young family, has given 20+ years to Westmeath football as player, selector and manager.

Havent seen anything official but disappointing news if true. In his two years we achieved promotion to Div2 and reached the All Ireland series back to back, highlights include winning Div 3 silverware in Croke Park, running Armagh to 1pt in Athletic grounds and drawing against Tyrone. We were competitive in every single game we played against Div 1 opposition. Unfortunately I think its a sign of things to come and retirements will follow suit. Thanks for all your efforts Dessie .
