Replying To Claretandblue:  "No Mick, it's based on our result plus the other teams in the division, as stated Clare in total transition, Limerick and Sligo just promoted from division 4 and Antrim the weakest side in Ulster while Wicklow are an average side, let's face it, if any of those sides beat us in a championship match it's likely the manager would resign or be replaced, it's also the last chance for many of our players to experience Division 2 football by gaining promotion this year, highly unlikely John Heslin, Kieran Martin, Jason Daly, Kevin Maguire and Jimmy Dolan will be involved in 2026 if we don't get promoted this year, Dessie's role as manager unlikely to be renewed unless we're promoted, all those incentives means I'm extremely confident of finishing in the top two alongside Down."
Limerick were relegated from division 2 last year

The Westmeath team that started the 1st round of Division 1 National Football League in 2013 against Cork in Pairc Ui Rinn. Maguire, Gonoud, Dolan, Heslin ,Martin all still involved today and the great Des Dolan coming off the Bench. Looking forward to hopefully watching them all Sunday in the Park along with the classy O'Toole and Loughlin.

WESTMEATH: D Quinn; S Gilmore, K Maguire, Damien Dolan; J Dolan, J Gilligan, J Gonoud; D Duffy, D Corroon; G Egan, J Egan, P Sharry; K Martin, J Heslin, A Giles.

Subs for Westmeath: D Glennon for Giles (30), K Gavin for D Dolan (40), Des Dolan for Martin (44), R Connellan for Corroon (54), D McNicholas for Heslin (inj, 67).

A good win sunday in what could have been a potential banana skin. Westmeath were the better team and were physically dominant. The game probably shouldn't have been as close. Big game now against clare. Ray had his best best in awhile for westmeath and the backs were good, still think we could get a bit more out of the forwards. Conor dillion had his best game for westmeath also and drove the team on. Looking forward to a big home support Sunday in another tricky game

I don't agree that Dessie's role as manager depends on whether we get promotion or not. For instance, if we get to the Leinster final and perform as well in the All-Ireland games as we did last year, I think it would be crazy to get rid of him if he wanted to stay on. And who would you suggest could do a better job?

2014 maybe? Not 2013, as were in Div2. Got to final and lost to Derry.

If we can't get out of division 3 this year we may forget about it. An ageing squad with multiple keep starters very close to the end of their intercounty careers and the division looks as weak as ever. Win our next 2 and we'll be in a good position. Promotion and a Leinster final would be a good season, would also be nice to be competitive again in the all Ireland's.

Getting to the Leinster final and performing well in the All Ireland series would be significant achievements and rightly guarantee management another year but surely those prospects are unlikely if we can't secure promotion from division 3 this year. In previous years promotion was difficult with the likes of Cavan, Fermanagh, Louth and Down in contention but this year's main obstacle apart from Down are Antrim and they were abysmal in Cusack Park last March.

Promotion a possibility but too early yet in the league to be counting our chickens!!.We need to sort out this second half problems we put ourselves into.Against Down and Louth last year cruising in first half and then collaspe-again on sunday first 20 mins of second half we were off it and against a better team we would have been in trouble again-Offaly kicked some terrible wides in that period and then last 10 mins we were in control again. We have the players/squad to get out of this division and hopefully against Clare on sunday we will have 2 wins from 2 which is all you can ask for.

Definitely not 2013, Connellan wasn't even on u21 squad in 2013, 14 or 15. Decent Performance at the weekend, the draw couldnt have fell any better, 5 games in a row they should be targeting, last 2 the hardest. Offaly missed a sitter of a goal and i thought ours was clearly off the ground, so i think 4 points flattered us, more of a 1 point game.

Plenty of players from westmeath playing sigerson quater finals last night, great to see. Baker hit 1-1 for dcu in narrow defeat, mcCartan scored for tud against a very strong ulster uni team. Maynooth had leech scahill and osullivan starting in a great win over Queen's and lynam, drumm playing with ucd in a comprehensive win.

Four players starting in Sigerson semi finals next week is a very significant sign. Avoiding each other in semi finals a positive too, Possibility of all four starting in final would be a record for Westmeath I'd imagine. Charlie Drumm didn't start or come on as sub for UCD which indicates their strength, Ben O' Carroll from Brigid's only introduced as a sub, DCU surely regret not starting Senan Baker, he scored 1-1 in 20 mins but narrowly beaten. Fionn O' Hara an unused sub for Queens.

Great news , a long time coming. We are still 10/15 years behind most counties though and that is very evident at underage level.
Cant wait to see the levies on the clubs going forward following this news.

48 acres for around a million in such a good location seems decent business. That's a large plot of ground given your average pitch is say 3.5 acres so lots of potential well into the future. Any potential to relocate Cusack Park I wonder ?
I believe the chair has said the clubs will not be levied but hard to see it not happening. You'd imagine not much change out of 10 million to develop a CoE but could be phased with pitches first. I am sure Croke Park's money people will be all over it and our own CEO is no financial slouch. I recall the Donegal one in Convoy initially had 3 pitches and had prefabs for dressing rooms for several years. Alternatively maybe better to do in one whack with a modest clubhouse / gym along with pitches. The proximity of the astro at Lomans makes sense. Is this a facility for all Westmeath gaels including camogie and ladies football ?

Surely this is a positive piece of news? Why the need to mention being years behind others? What does that achieve? Figure of €10-15m mentioned in local papers two weeks ago so if clubs are levied it's because it's necessary. Any ideas how to raise €1m in an annual fundraiser??

Good news on the Centre of excellence about 10 years to late though and its location has me wondering where about is it in proximity to Mullingar? is it going to cater for the entire county or is it going to favor the Mullingar side of things more so? strange news how quick it was after the JP money discussion in the papers.

Rumours have it that clubs around Athlone/Moate area will not support the COE as they were not consulted on the location. Half the population in Westmeath around the Athlone/Moate area.

Very hard to see young lads aged 13/14/15 travelling to the far side of mullingar 2/3 times a week for development training if they are from this area. COE should have been built around Tyrrellspass or Rochfordbridge.

But anyway it is positive news that we are atleast getting one but I believe it's going to take 10/15 years to build

It's a fair point, that if basing on population , you should put it halfway between Mullingar and Athlone. But based on geography, Mullingar is smack in the middle of the county. I imagine if it were too far West or South then the hurling clubs would be the ones not supporting. Hard to please everyone.
Am I right in saying that the link road referred to is the Robinstown link road? So directly opposite Shamrocks proposed new entrance? A lot of pitches in a very small area when factoring in Lomans too.
