I'm no fan of Oisin as a manager. I don't believe he is top drawer but i don't blame the manager entirely. I don't believe we have players good enough. This year's division 4 is pretty ordinary and we are making very hard work of being in the promotion conversation. I believe our problem is at club level. Also, while we were once strong at vocational schools level our presence is now non existent on the schools front. The manager in conjunction with the county board has brought in Frankie Dolan to work with our fowards while Oisin himself was a top forward, yet we are average in our forwards play - the rule changes are designed for high scoring, yet we score 4 points in a half of football. No team at intercounty level will win promotion at this rate.

What puzzles me most is the continual switching and shuffling and changing of the team. This team has had two ways of playing for a while now. Very good, or very poor. Consistency is non existent. Then we look at the personnel. No players from Rathnew who are top of the league., 2 from Pats, 2/3 from Balto and Blesso, that's fair enough. 2? From Gers and also 2 from Barndarrig. Big difference in population there. 1 from Eire Og, albeit a top drawer one. Bray ?? 5 from Tochair - who have failed to make a meaningful impression in the championship when it gets to knockout. Are there others out there who people feel should be involved and aren't for whatever reason?

The continuous changing is a problem but Oisin might say he's trying to find his best team. In relation to Rathnew having no players on the team-squad, i have to say after seeing Rathnew in the championship, i couldn't pick a Rathnew player to play for the county who would improve on what players Oisin is currently picking. I think the fact that an average Rathnew team is top of the league and reaches thd latter stages of the championship emphasise my point that club football in Wicklow is mediocre at present. We have very average players to pick from. I accept your point about the An Tochar players - they're nice players to watch but i wouldn't expect those same players to grind out a result or close out an important game. In Oisin's first game in this year's league he picked not one player from the thirty players that played in the county final which i find hard to fathom.

Senior final was mediocre at best. An Tóchar and AGB have far better footballers and will prove this

The consenus seems to be that AGB and An Tochar will breakthrough. Yes they have some nice players on the eye but the pressure is on them to produce in the way Rathnew and Baltinglass have done. There is a number of class at a certain level but no team seems to have the quality to rise above the rest. With a few exception teams can beat one another on any given day. Kiltegan have avhieved more than AGB and An Tochar in recent years at senior level.

1 senior championship in their combined history , this post really shows the arrogance of these two clubs and their supporter's ,might also explain why they win very little.

Jeez. There you go again, o think we have seen similar here last year. . I'm a GAA supporter and not from either of those clubs so it's no skin off my nose, but you seem to have a bit of a complex about certain clubs - and even supporters ?? I've been to hundreds of games over the course of my lifetime as a player, selector and as a supporter and while you get a small handful of over excitable supporters of the teams at most games, I have to say I have never encountered "arrogance" anywhere along the east coast anyway, and I'm sure the rest of the county is the same. Certainly not among supporters. Maybe you should relax and get out more. Get that plank off your shoulder. Go watch games where your own club isn't involved. You might be surprised at what you find.

Yes, have to agree this year been a little under whelming from the team, I kinda hoped they kick on after a pretty good outing in the taltain cup last year. An argument about where the players are from I dont really think holds up. As i dont think Mcconvile has any great alliances to any local club. Maybe it is fair to say for 50/50 calls Mcconvile has gone with the younger players. Some one asked the questions what players are out there that should be on the team and as yet there no response. Players who caught my eye in recent years maybe Hurley in AGB, Cullen and Byrne (not sure after injury) in Avondale, Sean Doyle in Dunlavin but I am sure people will disagree on them. Like bigger issues is yes there should be more players from the population areas on the east coast but who are they. Again in the last 3 years club championship i could make the case the player of the year being John Mcgrath, Mcloughlin or Stafford and Kelly or McWalters with an average age that i would think would be closer to 40 than 30.

In fairness these clubs have won minors and u20's in recent years which is more relevant.

There was a similar post on here last year with similar sentiments about a few clubs. Apologies if it wasn't you - but the rest stands.

Best of luck to the players and management in their game at home to Limerick tomorrow. An important game with no margin for error - victory is the only way we can keep our promotion hopes alive. Reading today about Leitrim not being able to field a team against Fermanagh in Division 3 due to injuries and a lack of fit players, hopefully the GAA can assist weaker counties to maintain a level playing field against the practical professional Division 1 teams. The point I'd like to make is to pay tribute to the Wicklow players who will line out tomorrow and give their best efforts to represent and win on behalf of all Wicklow supporters. The players and all the volunteers who contribute to the cause shouldn't be overlooked and taken for granted. These players are representing us with very little reward but they do it and I'd like to thank them and I hope that they can gain promotion from Division 4 which I'm sure will what each and every one of them want. wicklowsupport (Wicklow) - Posts: 2078 - 15/03/2025 17:59:12 2596546 Link 0 |
Wexford have just beaten Tipperary scoring 1-6 without reply to win 1-13 to 1-12. This means tomorrow Wicklow and Limerick will fight it out in Aughrim to effectively get promoted alongside Wexford. Both should win their last games with Tipperary and Waterford having little to play for. Tomorrow is our All Ireland Final. Wicklowman (Wicklow) - Posts: 1142 - 15/03/2025 20:44:49 2596596 Link 0 |
Not going to miss this one. I see it is much the same team as last time out, although there is no guarantee that the named team will start. As you say, this is a huge game. Let's hope this young team stands up tomorrow and proves to us that they are be as good as we think they can be .

Three points up with time running out. Promotion chances hanging by a thread

That's a very poor result for Wicklow football today, which all but guarantees another season in Division 4. There's a very large backroom team there between outside coaches and county board personnel. Accounts have been written about for a while now. We are like the curates egg - good in parts. Lots of stupid mistakes. One thing that we thought stood out. Only Dean Healy was prepared to take the hits and break the line. Can't see Limerick slipping up against Waterford. Even allowing that we might beat Tipp, and that is a big ask from this team. Why are we afraid to kick the ball into our full forward line? kodak13 (Wicklow) - Posts: 83 - 16/03/2025 16:43:49 2596738 Link 0 |
