In our own case , we've already lost three championship matches and still not technically out.

I agree wholeheartedly with you; the football championship is a borefest and people are voting with their feet. Yes, the structure is wrong but for me, the big problem is the product i.e. the style of play. There's no jeopardy which results in no excitement which results in no atmosphere - it is like watching a training match live. Something needs to be done as people are switching off.

I see K Quinn is included in tomorrow's team v Carlow. I hope this is right as I rate him highly but was that not a straight red he got last time out against Laois or have the rules changed on sending offs ?

The only positive to be taken from all these games from a Wicklow perspective is that the panel has had 12 competitive games at least, including the league, which , given their age profile can only be a plus. The question is, are they learning ?? To answer the general thrust of your question - yes, there are way too many nothing and uninteresting games. I would imagine the attendance numbers will reflect this.

Apparently that win yesterday was enough to see them into the knockouts.

Al least they can't draw Fermanagh again. Looks like 3rd places are drawn against one of the other second places. It's unlikely to be Laois although they wouldn't be the toughest of the 4.

We are away next week to either Leitrim, Limerick or the loser of Antrim/Sligo this afternoon. If we win that we are then away to either Kildare, Down or the winner of Antrim/Sligo.

Leitrim. Wouldn't fancy their chances at all in that one.

Yep, I know. Disaster...... we'll be packing it in.....

At the same time - the season wouldn't be complete without a game against Wicklow....... we missed you..

True. We have always struggled against Leitrim. If the team that turned up against W/Meath, Kildare and even yesterday's turn up, they could win it. I'm leaving out the games against Laois as I believe if we were playing them still , we wouldn't win. They are capable of winning it but ??

Apologies Frankiejoe..... thought "their" referred to Leitrim, not Wicklow.

Anyway.... we're old "foes" because we are both mostly in Div 4, but strangely have developed a strange bond along with Carlow and Waterford. We all get promoted from time to time, but unfortunately seem to come straight back down. Was hoping Wicklow would stay up.

Seems to me, (some statistician can correct me with wrong) but "generally" Leitrim beat Wicklow in Carrick, Wicklow beat Leitrim in Aughrim ). I dont remember losing to Wicklow in Carrick, dont remember winning in Aughrim. ... I'm sure there has been exceptions.

Still not a good draw, as Wicklow would be seen to be the strongest on third seeds. On the other hand we'll be well-focused, as best team on the day will win that one.

I think Frankie Joe had Wicklow in mind when he made that comment. It's always tight against Leitrim but we are really unpredictable.

Open to correction but we won in Aughrim in 2019?? The year we last got promoted to D3. I recall Wicklow winning in Carrick early 00's maybe.

Anyway the game won't be in Carrick. Looking like Pearse Park. Any reason why it couldn't have been played in Ballinamore? Regardless of venue it is certainly the toughest draw we could have gotten. Will be very little between the sides

I suppose it's born out of a kind of camaraderie that develops out of playing not too often and a respect for the effort of the players to improve their lot. You will notice I am not mentioning county boards or managers here. Having said that, the population of us coastal counties, Wicklow, Wexford and Waterford bear no comparison to Carlow or the likes of Leitrim or Longford, who by our standards punch way above their weight and must be admired. In fairness to Wexford and Waterford, they are top tier in the small ball game usually and Carlow are getting there. We have a large population and seem to be close to the bottom in both codes. Nobody can seem to improve this situation. In fact, we are probably at a lower ebb now than 20/30 yrs ago. Anyway, here's hoping for a cracker next week.

I posted about discipline a few months ago as a main deterrent and prohibitive factor in both participation and our lack of success. My point was that people were getting sent off but there are no suspensions or in some cases very minimal suspensions. I mentioned the Annacurragh case from this time last year which made national headlines and was widely circulated on social media as there was a full video of the event. One player starts a fight and must have thrown close to 20 punches. He then walks over to the sideline and starts another fight. It was crystal clear footage. He didn't even get a weeks suspension and he played in Junior championship the following week and went on to play intermediate championship, including appearing in the intermediate final. But in this instance, I do believe the club appealed the case and he somehow got off.

Here we have a case that appeared before the courts yesterday. I wont mention any name but you can read about day one of the trail here, under the headline "I though six teeth were knocked down my throat":

https://www.independent.ie/regionals/wicklow/news/courts/i-thought-six-teeth-were-knocked-down-my-throat-gaa-player-punched-in-face-during-match-court-told/a1593382829.html

You can read about day two whereby jury announced their decision:

https://www.sundayworld.com/crime/courts/gaa-player-found-guilty-of-assault-after-punch-left-opponent-with-several-damaged-teeth/a1587203794.html

I'm not going to comment on the trail as sentencing is yet to be determined. However, I do find it interesting that the event occurred on 9 June 2019 and the defendant (who has been convicted before the Criminal Court) played in the Wicklow Senior Championship two months later. **He may have played earlier that's all I can find on Wicklow People. Proof:

https://www.independent.ie/regionals/wicklow/bray-news/bray-dish-out-devastating-defeat-to-baltinglass/38380540.html

If I was the barrister for the defendant, I would have argued that Wicklow County Board have reviewed the case (they must have as he got a straight red) and they deemed it not to be a serious incident as only a minimal suspension was issued (as he didn't appear to miss must games).

However, the respondent barrister (if he knew anything about Wicklow) could simply say come on judge this is Wicklow County Board and refer to the Annacurragh case I mentioned above….

If Wicklow County Board had of issued an appropriate suspension, I highly doubt this case would have went to the Criminal Court.

I'm sure the lack of suspensions is also affecting referees performances and they get the brunt of it, however, in both cases above the referee has done his job and issued a red card to the perpetrator.

Its such an easy fix in the county. Maybe the first step to get an appearance in a Leinster underage final in the next 15 years..

Great well researched post Tank. Sadly this has always been the case in this county. It isn't a latter day phenomenon. Fifty years ago a player got suspended for a few yrs on more than one occasion and lined out for club and county a short while later. Is there not some rule or other in the bye-laws or whatever that footage can't be used as evidence ? That means you are down to who saw what. We have a lot of ostriches attending our games. Possibly county boards are afraid of litigation if they impose severe penalty's ? I think we are not alone in this as a county. Again, clubs should be responsible for the behaviour of players - and spectators although this can be another minefield. That particular club really showed the backbone of a snail in this instance. I am no fan of the county board but surely all onus for punishment shouldn't be laid at their door. A question - over the years how many clubs have imposed suspension on any of their players for this type of incident ??
