Best of luck to the hurlers tomorrow in Antrim. This is a hugh game & after all the progress it would be disappointing to be relagated back to the Joe Mac. I see it as a 50/50 game but home advantage will definitely help Antrim. James Doyle being fit would be a hugh help but didn't look good after the Wexford game. Hopefully we get a good support for the lads as they deserve it & they have put in some massive performances during the championship. Every team in Leinster has had their bad days & ours was definitely against Wexford. I have hugh faith in the lads to drive it on again. Ceatharlach abu

Gutted. That was never a sending off. Destroyed the game from a Carlow point of view. We were well in it even though conceding 4 goals never makes it easy. A push to the ground is a free & bearly a yellow. After all the hard work we back down to the Mcdonagh cup. The lads gave us some great performances in Leinster this year & I enjoyed every minute of it. Our underage results are really poor so can't see us competing at this level into the future so makes it harder to accept relegation now after competing so well. Forum very quiet here in the build up to game & since....where is everyone gone??

Hard luck to hurlers yesterday as always games with us and antrim are close and need the rub of the green especially up there to get a result.

Where competitive in every game bar Wexford this year and gave us that incredible day against KK.

Hopefully core of the team stays together and keeps fighting the good fight.

Regarding sending off if that's now a red card the game might aswell be non contact.

That was never a red card…. Another ridiculous one given to a Galway player and a penalty given to Kilkenny for a foul 2 yards outside the large square but no card issued at all… Referees have football ruined and now they are doing the same to hurling…

Credit to the hurler's they have given us some great days out this year, especially against KK, But again ill-discipline has cost the team, The Red card was harsh but the player put himself in a situation he didn't need and gave the ref an easy out. should have just left the field and headed into the dressing room.

In a way hearth breaking defeats are nothing new to us, however Carlow hurlers down through the years have always done themselves and the county proud, and still do.
They will be back, stronger and better.

I am going to put my head on the block and tell you honestly why it went so quiet. Huge disappointment after the Wexford game. Carlow hurling people have been asking the 'normal fan' to support the team for years. Finally, the masses came out to get behind them and they collapsed. If they were horses, they'd have been suspended under the non triers rule.

They just seemed to give up after Wexford got that jammy early goal. Didn't put up any sort of a fight at all.

No wonder so many people were cursing them afterwards.

I love the Carlow hurlers, and have supported them for decades. In fact, for about the first 20 years of my support we didn't actually have a senior team. And the standard wasn't great, to put it mildly.

I think 1992 - when we lost to Galway by about 10 points - was our first senior game for about 30 years.

The last eight days have been very depressing. After the high of the Kilkenny draw, we are now relegated. And it's going to be hard to come back up in the short term. Look at Westmeath this year.

We have to be realistic and realise that a) a number of players will lose interest now, b) Tom Mullally will almost certainly leave us and c) we don't have a huge amount of underage talent as you correctly say.

Let's just hope that we can get two or three good hurlers off every minor side, and they stick at it. Something like what a few good clubs manage to regularly do.

Please don't anyone attack me over this post. I am just relaying what people are saying. Might as well be honest about it.

Personally, I am extremely disappointed. I don't want to castigate Chris Nolan - who is a great hurler.

The sending off was ludicrous, but equally Carlow shouldn't gave gotten involved in that argument. They were in the lions den, and they should have known Antrim would get up to these sort of tricks. And once you raise your hand, you give officials an excuse.

The lads should have walked away. And laughed at them.

Once we were down to 14, it was hopeless.

I sincerely hope the panel are so upset by the events of the last eight days that they now turn around and decide they will stick together, and win that Joe McDonagh again next year.

Let's hope we are back here in twelve months time posting in a more positive manner!

Sorry to see Carlow relegated to Joe McDonagh for 2024. You really had a good season, drawing with Kilkenny was the highlight, and good performances in other games, apart from the Wexford game.
Carlow showed they were not out of place in the Leinster championship.

Devastated for them! They've thrown everything at the championship and got and gave so much out of it, to end like this is so tough. That group are doing their best to promote the game in our county by bringing pride into being a carlow hurler. Got no luck or a break at all, from officials or otherwise! Penalty???? Only way it could be was if he was in the square which wasn't the case, and other defenders were there to ensure it wasn't a clear goal scoring chance. And as far as the sending off goes, unbelievable!
Playing a game of such magnitude with such repercussions for the leinster championship in Belfast sounds farcical, with home advantage being very much a deciding factor! Surely play the games home and away, and then the two bottom teams should Playoff on a neutral Leinster venue..
Leinster need to grow a pair and decide what suits Leinster… I'm assuming logically it's the hurling counties of Leinster that dictates the structure in Leinster???
Yes our underage isn't strong but there's loads of serious talent on the current squad to step up next year likes of Jake Doyle, Evan Kealy, Donagh Murphy, Colm Beck etc etc and the u20, u19, u18 and minors this year have a few others that will come through if developed properly.. we only need 2 or 3 each year…
But dropping back could potentially be a disaster..

Couldn't make it to Belfast due to work so had to listen to the game on kclr. Really disappointed for the players and management but also proud of their efforts again this year. I would agree carlow players shouldn't be getting involved in silly off the ball stuff but if the video footage I've seen was the reason for the sending off then that is the softest dismissal I've ever seen on a hurling field. Anyway it's done now so all that is left is to regroup and try to bounce back next year in the joe mc. It won't be easy but shur it never is. Ceatharlach Abu!

Ultimately it comes down to an unsuccessful season. The draw against Kilkenny is no good when we didn't back it up yesterday.

The red card was never a red card but I'll echo another poster why put yourself in that position, it's not the first time we've allowed our ill discipline cost us up north lads. I know it's easy say when you're not in the heat of the moment but there's a time sometimes when you're just better off walking away,

John Michael surely should have had a penalty at one point.

We only played 25 mins with 15 players yesterday. To play full half without chris was a nightmare. Antrim passed ball around well. We had some promising moves and can only imagine how many options chris would have given us. James doyle retaliated which led to the situation where chris was sent off. A very sad day for carlow. Joe mc is tough. Tought conor kehoe, dion wall and jon nolan had great years so all is not lost.

Sorry to see Carlow go down to the Joe McDonagh for 2024. You'd a good season! It was a mighty display to draw with Kilkenny.
The draw sometimes can decide these things. If you'd Wexford away and Antrim at home I think Carlow would still be in the Leinster championship for 2024. You showed that you're plenty good enough for it!

It was always going to come down to the last day it was crucial to keep everyone on the field, we may not have won either way but that didn't help, it was a soft red, going to assume it was for contributing to a melee as its the only infraction that comes close to what could be deemed a red but again very soft.
That's probably the strongest carlow team ever plenty of those lads played A hurling at underage inter county, we are nowhere near that now which would be concerning looking ahead, I get what people say about adding 2 or 3 every year but those 2 or 3 will have only played B hurling which was why staying in the leinster championship was crucial to be able to offer that higher level to these lads.

Footballers are out against wicklow this weekend, can't see many making the trip from either county but atleast there is some jeopardy to the game, lose and we are out.

It's been a poor year on the inter County scene for all teams, with the exception of the senior hurlers who even though yesterday was disappointing have 1b hurling to look forward to in the league.

Looked like a soft red all right from where I saw it. Be interested to see what the referees report says.

In terms of the season. The current structure is hard on counties like ourselves, Carlow, Offaly, Westmeath, Laois and others pushing for a breakthrough, of course that is assuming Croke Park are serious about developing the game outside of the top counties. Leinster this year offered much with something at stake to the last puck in each game. I wonder if Galway finished bottom, would they be relegated or would a quickly convened convention change the structure?

A lot of posters here mentioning the decline in our fortunes at underage.

As I remember, in the early 2000s, we won a number of All Ireland B minors on the trot, and then went to the A (even reaching a Leinster final). Later, we remained relatively competitive at A minor level, and had a number of strong under 21 sides.

Sometime, around the late 2010s, underage very rapidly started to go into a reverse and now we are struggling at B level.

The under 20s have gone from competing with Kilkenny, Dublin and Wexford to struggling badly against the Joe McDonagh sides,

Does anyone here have a possible explanation for this?

Padraig Amond was on the Carlow minor hurling team, in 1985 who beat Offaly. He later played soccer across channel, finishing with Newport County in league 2. He is currently on the Waterford FC panel.

There are Probably multiple reasons for this, we don't have the finances to run football and hurling academies to the same level as other counties, but then you see longford who I doubt have much finances either and they always seem to be fairly strong. Maybe one or two clubs dominating underage panels is a bad thing. Or then maybe we don't have enough quality people over our teams. It's concerning in both codes particularly in football as we appear to have enough playing numbers but don't seem to be able to compete at all we are now below waterford at 17s 16s and 15s no disrespect to waterford but that shouldn't be the case. Underage hurling can find a level to compete at even if its lower than before, football has no level its competitive at

Not your what your point is there. But by your estimation, Amond is about 56 years old?

And still hanging in the goals?

Eat your heart out, Roger Milla.
