One glaring problem at the moment for Carlow football (and it's highlighted in this year's panel) is that there is no avenue for lads to play senior championship, unless there club anagens to get to senior status. I counted 14 lads on tonight's panel who have not played SFC in the last 3 years, most of which have never played senior football in Carlow. For an intercounty side that's a massive problem. But even in general, I do believe that every player at every club should have access to play senior football in Carlow, especially if they are good enough. The direction I would go is sectioning the county into three regions as follow (rough guess)s: North West: OL, Ballinabranna, Blues, Leighlinbridge, Asca & Eire Og North East: St Pats, Kilbride, Cocks, Clonmore, Grange, Pal & Rathvilly South: MLR, Fenagh, Myshall, KC, Ballon, St Mullins & Bagenalstown 5 club teams and the 3 regional sides play in the SFC. The regional teams have access to any player who is not affiliated with a senior club in their region. On the basis of the 2021 Championship, the below is how it would look. Group A: EO, Pal, NW & South Group B: Rathvilly, Bagenaltown, MLR & NE Same structure as now, one club team goes down and the intermediate champs go up. Regional teams stay senior. Run off the Junior and Intermediate championship early, to accommodate availability in the SFC. There are real advantages to doing something like this. It would increase the standard of the SFC, players at every club have a chance to play senior football ( this especially important for lads at small rural clubs) and can be used as a stepping stone for lads who have aspirations of playing inter county football. Sean Murphy & Conor Lawlor gone in with the hurlers this year. That good team we had between 2017-2019 has fallen apart and I'm afraid it's going to be a struggle from here on in. Id say from that team that beat Kildare in the championship in 2018 there are 8/9 players gone if not more. No disrespect to the lads in there who will undoubtedly do their best but we just dont have the quality coming through to replace Murphys, Lawlor Broderick, Redmonds etc. I can see it going back to the hammerings we used to get pre O Brien & Poacher. Have a bit of faith.After all kildare are a division 1 team.We won't be playing that quality of team in our division.While we are playing London they will be playing Kerry.We have to give this transition a chance,change is inevitable and we will have to see how it goes before we can make judgment. After reading where the Carlow / Westmeath game is called off because Carlow can't field a team, that is to say the least sad, really sad. One game into the new year and they can't find 15 players in the county to fulfil the fixture, even allowing for the fact that it may be covid or injuries, or both, surely the determination should be in every club in the county to push on at every available opportunity it is all about trying out new players etc. I hope its not because Carlow lost by 0-18 to Kildare, it's worth remembering Kilare are a div.1 side, they have an all star management set up, awash with money their C B posted where they're finances is are in the black for the first time in years, Kildare are potential leinster champions, so it was a game Carlow was not expected to win, and so be it. If Carlow genuinely and honestly can't field a team to fulfil the fixture before a ball is kicked in this new year, we are in a bad place. I got the impression it was a large if inexperienced squad" I read it this morning on the HS home page, one of two reports, one clearly read that the Carlow / Westmeath was cancelled because Carlow claimed they couldn't field a team, it went on to say the game was a dead rubber anyway, either way it should have been played. Like someone else said on here, we are at the begining of a rebuilding process We had 2 very influential men leading the team and a cohort of talented footballers many of whom could have with a bit of luck won minor and u21 Leinster title medals . We don't have that now and a small county like ours do well to produce teams of any quality every 10- 15 years . I mean teams that can really compete regularly You learn to be patient and enjoy the good moments . 50 years following Carlow and the great day tho not many are so memorable We can just keep the faith and support what we got. Looked like a solid win today in kehoe cup Conor Lawlor must be the first man from North Carlow to be on County team for a long time Bog loss to footballers s is Sean Murrphy . Nice win yesterday for hurlers. In truth, it's a game they should be winning as Kildare were missing the Naas contingent. Solid looking panel. Horse and Sean Murphy nice additions, while Diarmuid Byrne being back is a boost. Quietly going about their business. 2A is tough this season, Out of the 6 teams, 5 will fancy their chances of getting to a final. Good finish to win well yesterday. A very positive start. League will be tough but good to see the return of some players who had featured strongly on football teams of very recent years. When you think about it, the hurling should be a more attractive prospect for dual players undecided what to commit to. Just off the top of my head the advantages are: - Play at a higher standard than the footballers - Promotion away from playing highest standard of hurling - Settled and well respected coaching staff - Higher chance of winning some silverware - Solid core group of players established on the panel Horse and Murphy may not be automatic starters for the hurlers as they would for the footballers, but they add some much needed depth and will have a part to play in every game.
