Good weekend for carlow gaa. Footballers done what they had to on a bad night. Hurlers well deserved winners today. Really impressed with the performance especially lads like John doyle, lorcan doyle and paddy boland who had his best performance in a while in a carlow shirt. The usual suspects were on their game too. Could be a good year ahead.

Replying To Onion Breath:  "If Wexford are as strong this year as they say they are with most or all top talent opting in then I'd fear we could get a trimming down there in two weeks time. This team is brittle enough id say as shown v Tipp and we didn't beat Waterford as convincingly as score suggests.

Much as I'd like to i don't see grounds for optimism that Carlow will do any better than last season - mid table."
That was some win. Chris Nolan was the difference with the two goals, but everyone played their part.

Today is yet another landmark on a journey that started in the mid-2000s when we beat Wexford in the old Division Two.

Well done to everyone concerned.

If any younger followers want some context for how far we have come: 40 years ago, we finished mid-table in Division Three! Level on points with Wicklow and Armagh - and behind Down and Meath. We would have been ranked about 19th or 20th in the country.

Thirty years ago, we finished bottom of Division Two. One draw from seven games (against Meath).

Now we are on course for a top 10 league finish.

Replying To Onion Breath:  "Ah Carps rookie mistake there. If you knew your racing you wouldn't associate Thurles with muck given all the problems they've had there this year.

I wish you were right about Lee Walker starting a trend but reality is he's not the same as the others as he wax in Carlow squads before when playing club with the Blues. It makes his case notably different but hope you're right."
I haven't followed the racing since the heyday of the greatest trainer of them all - Tom Foley.

There's no way Wexford will get near Carlow under Cake. The Tipp and Waterford performances were all part of the mind games. Just watch. Let's come back to this in two weeks time, after Wexford have been crushed like an almond brittle.

Great win for the hurlers and fully deserved. Marty probably left four or five more points behind out there as he wasn't quite on form with some very scorable frees missed so it could have been even more. Great also to get a win like that without our strongest 15 on the field and to blood younger lads like Lorca Doyle in that type of game. Have to say though what a performance again from Dion Wall this time filling in for Paul Doyle at full back. Brilliant also last week v Offaly at centre back. And all after a tough week for him and family great to see.

Well done Carlow and deserved. A more seasoned team than Waterford and I expected this. No excuses about missing 9 players. If you are given the chance you must take it. Our first touch was deplorable and Carlow won the contest for breaking ball.

Those hurlers never cease to be brilliant.

What a performance and a win.

Mouse, James Doyle, Chris Nolan, Ciaran Whelan and the whole defence were excellent.

Good job Tom Mullally.

Once again our hurlers turn in a performance for the ages to secure first victory over Waterford.

What more can be said about these guys never cease to amaze as I've said plenty times before the Carlow hurlers are the definition of what you get when you get the best players in a county with the a remarkable attitude to succeed and who individually push themselves to squeeze every last bit of potential and talent they have from themselves and they also seems to be an incredibly tight bunch of players to boot.

After last year in antrim I was worried it may have been beginning of the end for this team but seems to have come back stronger.

We can now add waterford to our list of great days we've had in the past few years with this bunch of players.

When you consider there are more senior hurling teams in sligo at present if really puts into perspective what these guys do and continue to do .
Congrats again to Tom and the team and best of luck for the next round.

What a brilliant performance & result today from our hurlers. These lads never fail to deliver with hugh heart & skill. This was no fluke & we should really have won by more with a missed goal chance & a few frees going astray. We have never beaten Waterford before today so that's another team ticked off. From talking to a few Waterford friends after the game they were in total shock but with our results in the last few years they shouldn't be surprised. We drew with KK last year & could have won that too. With 5 senior club teams we really are punching above our weight. Imagine if we had 10 senior teams what we could do... well done to the footballers also on their win in Waterford. On a final note thank god our county teams have gone back to the white shorts. The red shorts were horrendous

And 60 years ago were in division 1 beating Cork who had christy ring playing. Just for context, carps.
Pointless comparing different eras. All great men who gave their best just like today's lads. Great stuff yesterday especially to regain the initiative after going behind in 2nd half. We need to press on now and consolidate our position. The real shame is how we have been shafted by being excluded from leinster championship by Croke Park. Lip service to hurling promotion once again .

Sixty years ago, I was a small child. I am posting about memories from my own time playing with and following Carlow. We have come so far.

You are right, we had a very good team in the early 1960s. We also reached Division 1b in 1978 - played Tipperary and Cork - but the team was nowhere as good as now.

How have we been shafted by being "excluded" from Leinster? If we win the Joe McDonagh we will be back in it next year. Will Offaly or Wexford be "shafted" if they get relegated this year and we leapfrog them?

Couldn't make yesterday unfortunately but super win. Nothing much more to be said about this group of players. Great to see Lorcan Doyle start and play the full game, it shows the management trust him and his ability at this level. Would be interested to hear from anyone at the game where he played and how he got on. The match reports list him as wing forward but I think he would be mainly in defence for Burren Rangers.

Next game is against Laois in Portlaoise in 3 weeks time which is a big game. Win and you could be safe from relegation and you never know, potentially dreaming of promotion with some big games at home against Antrim and Westmeath.

Thanks Jobber. In the 1980s, we would have look at Westmeath as the team to aspire to. I remember you beating Dublin in 1982 in Croke Park. A great day.

Well done to Carlow hurlers on their great start to the league…. I remember the day many years ago when you played Cavan in Bailieborough an a NHL Division 3… Carlow won on a score line of 3-14 to 5-6 if I remember properly… Only knows what you'd wallop us now by but we are trying manfully to improve all the time… Keep up the great work Carlow..!
