Replying To B&G:  "As it stands now, there is no free slot to play the Leader Cup Final until after the championship ( unless the finalists are knocked out early)
What they could do is if the Leader Cup finalists clash in the championship, they might double that fixture as a championship and Leader Cup final match.
Stranger things has happened"
It's been played next weekend sure.

As far as I'm aware In years gone by the Leader Cup was awarded to the team that topped the league. I don't see anything wrong with that happening now either. With two groups that just involves a play off between the two as happened this year.
As for discontinuing the Leader Cup, it wouldn't matter to me what name they call the league.
Cup names have changed a lot down the years, which a poster here was able to clear up a few months ago.

The Skelly Cup pits the top 2 this time around because the division was split into two groups this year. In prior years when it was one division, the Skelly Cup (and the Bertie Allen Cup before it) was for the team that topped the division. The Leader Cup is like the National Football League title in that it pits the top teams in the league for the overall league title and involves a final. In some years that involved the top 2, in others the top 4. I would ask the question the other way around... why is there a need for a divisional title? If the division is going to continue to be two groups, scrap the Skelly Cup, keep the Leader Cup which has a much longer and richer history, and have it played each year between the top two teams in Division 1 (not the top 4). The format for the Leader Cup has ebbed and flowed over the past 86 years, but it has always been the senior league title with a final, not an award for the team that topped the division. The idea of awarding a cup for topping Division 1 is a fairly new thing, originating in 1990 (Colmcille were the first winners in fact).

PS - Leader Cup Final still showing up in the master fixtures and on Longford GAA website as 23rd July... link

Back in the early to mid 90s the leagues were 4 divisions with 6 teams each. Div 1 and 2 were the Senior teams, Div 3 was Intermediate and Div 4 was Junior. The winners of Div 3 and 4 competed in the Leader Cup. I think the way it worked back then was Div 3 and 4 teams played each other with the winners playing the Div 1 winners in the semi final. Runner up in Div 1 played winner of Div 2 in the other semi final.

Yes You said it better than me. If you have the j Skelly for 1st in group A vs 1st in Group B is there a need now for the next 1v2 in A and 1V2 in B.

I meant to say the winners of Div 3 and 4 played each other with the winners advancing to meet the winners of Div 1 in the semi final.

Why was Dromard presented with the Leader Cup for winning the ACFL Division 4 Bertie Allen Cup yesterday?

Of course I would love to see slashers claim the title. However we have never really focussed on the league. The main focus for Slashers will always be the championship.
Players for all teams give up so much of their time tio the club. What I meant are these two extra games necessary? We already have the champions colmcille.

They arent two extra games we always had leader cup semi finals. Its one extra game thats the change, that final playoff was new because off the 2 groups. Just because a team doesnt have a great record in a competition doesnt mean there isnt a great focus. Slashers have always tried hard. Another fanatic far from the sidelines

In fairness it was a strange appointment in the first place.. with the turnaround of players we have at the moment it has to go to someone within the county! we seem to be rebuilding and need someone who knows the club scene well!

Did he lose the dressing room? Might have lost some in the stands, but didn't hear that he had lost the dressing room. Reason given was overseas work commitment which is fair enough.

Senior players wanted him gone so that was that. Maybe some of them could be the next player manager their wont be anyone else to blame if that happened!!

I heard on good authority that this is not a shock the the CB. Apparently both statements were released last night but decision was made weeks ago. And also the new or old manager has already been offered the job. Denis Connerton is taking it again after re-signing from Garrycastle. Apparently he re-signed so he can fully commit to Longford by attending all games possible no mattee, Senior, Intermediate or Junior. The CB seem to be going backwards!

Ah will you stop. Nobody sets out at the start of the year to win the league. It is a chance to give a few younger lads a run and hopefully unearthing a player or two for the championship.

Thought he worked in TUD? He coached them for years. He had a very expensive backroom team.
