Replying To LongfordgaaAbú:  "Personally, I couldn't care less about Leinster. Has been a dead duck for my entire lifetime, so I expect nothing from it this year either. Sooner we flash forward to later in the decade where these provincials can be dismantled once the old guys die off, the better. Looking forward to Tailteann Cup and chance of competing in something we could possibly win."
shocking disrespect there to traditionalists.
What makes you think the tailteann cup wont become the new tommy murphy cup where none of the teams that were in it cared about it and seen it as a nuisance and not worth anything.

I was planning on going in the road to see how Slashers looked under Liam Keenan but was late on the road so ended up going to Newtownforbes with the later throw in time.
A lot of players missing from both teams from what I heard in attendance.
2 Moffats and Quinn for Killoe and Duggan, O'Brien, Hanley, 2 Molloys and Sweeney for Clonguish.
Killoe seemed to take a lot out of the ball and were very reluctant to take shots at times when scores looked on. Clonguish looked to have a very young team bar one or two more senior players. Kicked a lot of ball into the Killoe keepers hands, counted at least 4 times this happened.
Fitness levels seem very good for both teams, surprising with Clonguish considering their management team had to be changed late on.

Any report from the Slashers game?

Slashers only made a burst in the last 10 and almost stole it after mullinlaghta keeper got sent off. Champs were motoring along in third gear at a push.
Killoe were missing more James Moran and mark Hughes aswel. Can't read into these games without full squads available

You are of course right - I should respect the tradition of this our 98th season in Leinster senior championship, and hope that after our 159 games in the competition of which we won 51, and having won 10 of our 35 Leinster senior championship games this century, that maybe this might be our year, if only we wish hard enough.

How high should I set my expectations? Should I be aiming for only our 4th Semi Final appearance since 1970, or should I am for only our 2nd Final appearance in 98 seasons over 160 games, or maybe I should be pushing to win only our 2nd title in the history of the entire competition since our first involvement in 1903? Perhaps I should I be content with just trying to get our wins total up from a miserable 51 out of 159 to something slightly higher? Just trying to establish where I should pitch my respect for tradition and this competition from a Longford perspective, and in the wake of a 22 point hammering by Meath last year, or the 19 point drubbing by Dublin in 2018.

But you see I can't find that love for the tradition of a competition which is dysfunctional and has served counties like Longford horribly over the years as a platform for any progress or development (51 wins out of 159 games played). It gets from me about as much respect as it deserves, which is just about none! Let the rose-tinted brigade fool themselves with every new season if they want to. I've been to enough hammerings to know its day is done. And thank god for that. If progress is to be made in Longford, it won't involve the Leinster Championship. Something new is needed, so I'm cheering for the something new over tradition because win #52 out of 160 just doesn't do it for me anymore.

Its probably the wishing for the old guys to "die off" remark. I prefer the provincials to go and agree with what you said and disagree with people that want to keep them but no need for that

Was at the Longford V Louth Lory Meagher game in the Park yesterday. Played most of the game with 14 men but managed to hold on for a deserved win. Next game against Monaghan is huge.

Forgot about Moran. Is Hughes not heading to New York? Transfer forms for a M Hughes and Liam Hughes from Killoe to Longford New York filed last month.

This is quite interesting. Without looking at it I would have thought Longford would have had a much better record than this.

I'm happy to withdraw any desire to hasten people to their divine end, but I maintain the rest. Vigorously.

In fairness Longford should be the reckoning for the Tailteann Cup. What other decent teams, likely to be in it, with any form will be among the contenders?

Cavan, Tipperary, Westmeath and possibly Antrim, though maybe not on the weekend showing.

I'm not sure Offaly will offer anything. Poor showing yesterday and seem to have a lot of injuries. Down seem to be a mess at the minute and I'd say all parties concerned can't wait for the year to be over.

Outside of these teams I'm not sure there will be anyone that you could consider contenders.

The 17 Tailteann Cup teams will likely be...

Antrim
Carlow
Cavan
Down
Fermanagh
Laois
Leitrim
London
Longford
New York
Offaly
Sligo
Tipperary
Waterford
Westmeath
Wexford
Wicklow

As you say, not a great deal there that we can't compete with on a good day, across four competitive games, making solid progress towards winning actual silverware, which would be major progress for Longford. I saw a comment from a Cavan writer on another thread where he proposed that it should have been called the 'All Ireland Intermediate Football Championship', and played as the curtain raiser to the All Ireland Senior final and have that 'All Ireland' branding in the name and on the medal. I couldn't agree more. But we are where we are, and we might as well make the best of it. Perhaps if it proves a success, those logical tweaks will come too.

I could see this competition as having huge potential for Longford. It should be something realistic we can win any year we are in it. It may also be the sort of competition that creates excitement about being involved in the county squad again and maybe gets an extra year or two out of players that might otherwise drop off.

Longford have always been a good side in the qualifiers and never switch off like some counties do, hopefully this mindset continues on with the current group.

Any word on any injuries or lads missing? I heard Joseph Hagan is unavailable. Big loss on his current form.

Anyone want to hazard a guess at starting team? I'm going to go with the following team
1. Paddy Collum
2. Patrick Fox
3. Andrew Farrell
4. Barry O'Farrell
5. James Moran
6. Michael Quinn
7. Iarla O'Sullivan
8. Kevin Diffley
9. Darren Gallagher
10. Dessie Reynolds
11. Darragh Doherty
12. Eoghan McCormack
13. Jayson Matthew
14. Mark Hughes
15. Jack Duggan

How good is Jack Duggan?? Haven't seen anything of him really since minor I think.

Longford and Westmeath have met 27 times in the championship. Longford have won 13 and Westmeath have won 11 games, there were 3 draws. Hopefully Longford can increase the gap in wins between the two teams.

In the most recent championship game was actually 2008, when Westmeath came out on top 2-10 to 1-10. Its actually amazing to think its been 14 years since they last played each other in the championship.

Only met 5 times (won 1, lost 4) in championship (4 Leinster, 1 Qualifier) in past 30 years!
I would have bet the house on more meetings than that, but the statistics don't lie.

That's a brilliant website. There is so much great work gone into it. I'm delighted that they took the initiative and put it together. There is so much history of the intercounty and club scene lost without it.

I was just thinking the other day, would it have been that difficult of a job for the County Board to have the old club league results and tables archived somewhere on the website. I'm not sure how long the website is up but surely over 15 years. All it would have took at the end of each year would be to archive them somewhere on the website, though I have said it before, the current website is very poor and appears to be like a lot of things done at County Board level in that it ticks a box to say they have a website that shows fixtures. Its not as good as the old website and you'd really hope that they'd be making progress with these things rather than stepping back. They'd be well at advised to get the lads behind https://longfordgaelicstats.ie/ on board as they seem to know how to put a useful and user friendly website together.

On a side note there is a new book out for anyone that enjoys the history of Longford GAA, its really interesting.

I stumbled on the old Longford site on Google recently. If you google 'Longford GAA website' and page through the results, you can quickly find it: link. It is as bad as I remember. For all its failings, the current site is a big improvement, though I agree that the fixtures needs to give more options to drill down by competition and so on. Not sure how relevant websites are anymore though. All about apps now since everyone is using phones to access things. Those league tables you mention are probably lost for good because I reckon newspapers didn't always publish league tables at end of every season.

Not got a copy of the gaelic fields book yet, it's on the list. Did Seamus and Eamonn write it or is it a collection of articles submitted by clubs which they collated and published? Either way looking forward to it. Good to see new publications. Last one I can remember is the Longford GAA history from 2005 maybe?
