They are not as good as what they think they are!

Neither will look to stay senior next year.

If you're losing two intermediate finals in a row and in a relegation playoff the year after, with all these names mentioned still in the group, that would suggest they most definitely are not a senior standard team. A product of the current situation and level Longford are operating at currently that a relegation threatened intermediate team would have so many on the Longford panel?

Wonder who will want the Connolly job now whoever gets them over the line will be wanted by bigger clubs

Strange comment, by the looks of it they will never get over the line!! Heavy favourites in the last 2 finals and blew it. As for the comment about them being senior, I hope you are trying to be funny, they just avoided the drop to junior. For some reason they seem to be a bit cocky and have been brought right back down to earth for the last number of years when in big games.

Totally agree with you. What i meant by senior standard is that they have quality players that are of the standard of most in the senior championship. There seems to be no hunger within the group. I attended the u18 semi final between them and drumlish on Sunday. Seems to be a few nice players on the rise, a son of Padraig Farrell's, the former Longford player, was playing corner back and he had a stormer, his hunger and fight was immense. Aaron Rawle was brilliant at centre back and McEvoy at midfield was very determined. All them players should benefit them in years to come

Clearly haven't got much in the forward line with less than 10 points scored

100% agree. Connollys have 5 players involved with county set ups ( 2 Reynolds, Duggan, O'Sullivan and Lynch) but yet never get over the final hurdle, but this year they didn't even start the race. Definitely highlights the issue with the county set up in Longford if underperforming players still hold county positions! Cashel could be in for a rough patch in the next year or 2. From watching the semi vs the Ardoos, they didn't deserve to be in the last 4. With Gary Kenny gone now they might have a fresh start with possibly an outsider, but playing Div 1 football next year will really diminish confidence in preparation for intermediate again. Killashee are going strong and are only team unbeaten in intermediate. I believe the last time they went on an unbeaten streak they won it, so I would say history will repeat itself. Ard/Moy will find it difficult to stop Mollohon, 3 Farrells, John Casey and their other veteran players. Nonetheless I would not rule out the Ardoos with Carrigy and Coady performing well. Hogan, Killian Farrell and Emmet Donlon also add to their firepower. Looking forward to an exciting game - Killashee to win by 4. It's looking likely that Kenagh and Ballymore are going to junior - but still a game each to play so we'll see how it plays out. Will Killashee go into the senior championshio if they win it?? Mad to think I have to ask that question, or will the county board play havoc again and let them stay down. Garmin (Longford) - Posts: 108 - 25/09/2025 11:32:23 2637393 Link 0 |

As someone from across the border can someone guide me on why Killashee for example wouldn't be senior next year if they win the intermediate; or why a Kenagh and Ballymore will/won't be junior if they lose their last game? I also read earlier in the summer that had Longford Slashers been relegated they wouldn't have gone to intermediate? OverTheHill85 (Westmeath) - Posts: 145 - 26/09/2025 07:46:49 2637491 Link 0 |

I have talked to a few people from other counties also who cannot understand the power that Longford clubs have when it comes to promotion/relegation. It really is a joke what goes on here and is not tolerated in other counties. Senior in Longford should be 8 teams. Intermediate 8. Junior 5. All clubs in these 3 championships should be solely first teams. The likes of Clonguish, Killoe, Slashers, Colmcille etc who have strong second teams should be in a Senior B, Intermediate B, Junior B. etc backtoback2 (Longford) - Posts: 50 - 26/09/2025 10:26:50 2637506 Link 0 |
There was a stupid rule in Longford, that the Intermediate champions could remain Intermediate the following year if they choose to do that. If they won it the second year, they then would have no choice but to go up. If you scroll through the Intermediate list of champions there was several 2 in a row champions, but also a few stayed down and did not win the following year. Big fan of the longford intermediate championship this year so far. Football had been top notch, games have been tight and we now have a final to look forward to in a few weeks time. My only gripe so far to date has been the commentary around the championship from the longford leader and some of the refereeing decisions in key matches. Every game up until the semi final the longford leader so called pundits called ballymahon to lose. Is it too much to ask for a bit of unbiased commentary on the games of what in my opinion has been the best gerry hennessy cup in years. Also don't get me started on the refereeing. Hard enough for players to play the game and give up all their time, but then when there is still no consistency at refereeing level it really lights a fire under me Longfordgaalover123 (Longford) - Posts: 4 - 26/09/2025 11:11:35 2637519 Link 0 |
I agree that the Intermediate this year has been very competitive and enjoyable. The only problem is the huge gulf between Intermediate and senior. It will take a few years to rectify. The ideal would be an 8 team senior and Intermediate and then you would have 5 sole juniors with second string senior teams. 2 groups of 4, winners of each group through to semi final, 2 v 3 in a quarter final and the 2 bottom clubs play off to go down. That would make for a very exciting championship as every game counts. The way it is now, no one pays attention til it's knock out. Some result that for Colmcille, have to hold my hands up, thought this would be the year the young lads of Clonguish took the next step. The longer it takes them to get there the more difficult it will be, tough mentally to be getting close every year and not able to get over the line, that pressure must grow every year. Second half literally looked like men vs boys at times. BallWatching (Longford) - Posts: 23 - 27/09/2025 18:23:08 2637660 Link 0 |
Great result for Colmcille. Took control of the second half and won the battle at midfield. It will be Colmcille v Killoe in the final and I have a feeling the result from the group stage will be reversed.

I think you're right, though I'd love to see Ratchline find an extra gear and spring a shock. Colmcille just looked like a team that knew how to win today, didn't panic at any stage, similar to Mullinaghta a few years ago and Killoe over the past few. Clonguish lacking that maturity and steady-head on the pitch.
