This might seem a mad proposal but I was wondering would there be any appetite for a cross border competition at senior level between Longford and Leitrim. I know at underage this has been going for about 10 years at various age groups. The games in it seem to be largely competitive as your matching teams with similar skill levels.

From the outside Longford club football looks very similar to over here in Leitrim. You've a handful of teams that can realistically win the senior championship. A few mid table teams that won't progress but won't get relegated either. Then the bottom two teams of senior and top 3-4 of intermediate that are too good for intermediate but not good enough for senior. This trend follows on then down into junior A.

Could there be a way to have a cross-border competition before the club championships and after the intercounty season. This would be pushing the league back earlier in the year but the reality is no one gives a toss about the league anyway (well in leitrim we don't). You'd have the best teams in both counties playing regular, competitive and high level football. I think it'd be a win win for both counties. People might say we don't have the time to fit in these extra games but it's well known that the best counties play the most club games (Tyrone, Kerry).

You could also then use this same model for u20/21's. In Leitrim this competition has really fallen behind in the past few years but perhaps more competitive games like St Mary's vs Clongusih would rejuvenate it.

Some of our Clubs play in a Leinster League already. I think Colmcille, Killoe, Granard, Clonguish and Ballymahon played in it last year. But I think your idea of a Leitrim/Longford competition would be a good idea. A few groups of 4 with top two teams qualifying for knock out. It could be something to be looked at. But if your County Board is like ours then it more than likely won't be looked at!!

Attention will soon be turning to the NFL. No word on fixtures yet. A few bits and pieces leaking out about the panel for the league and to say it doesn't look good is putting it mildly. Paddy is retiring from county this year. Not sure who the keeper will be as I'm not sure the lad from Killoe is playing either. A lot of the older players retiring as well as Darren Gallagher not committing and Jack Duggan gone to Roscommon.

Asking what sort of shape our County team will be in next year? lol
Some of ye lads are seriously obsessed.
If it bothers ye that much, would ye mind purchasing me a house in Newtown so at least your claims would be correct lol

Any outgoings or incomings on the management scene in Longford yet?
Apart from Liam Keenan departing Slashers and Tommy Donoghue taking over.

Would there be openings coming up in the likes of Abbeylara, Granard, Gaels, Cashel and Connollys?

I do have a confession to make......I was in Newtown celebrating a few championships over the years....I was brought along by my mother who thankfully used to be a Clonguish woman.
First time I was at a game was in the early 90's when they won a Junior title, with a young Enda Barden leading the charge at midfield with his cousin Lorcan. It was a proud moment for her when their captain, who later transferred to us Gerry Donnelly, lifted the cup.
But better days lay ahead for us a few years later and she had to join us in Drumlish and Ballinamuck to celebrate that!!

Enda Barden was not midfield that year, he played in the half forward line.
Lorcan Barden had transferred to Round Towers at the end of 1991, so was not involved when we won it in 92.
And Benny Reilly was the captain, not Gerry Donnelly!!

You were gloating at your county representatives being beaten by West Meath men. Very strange. Not really sure why you'd be concerned about Longford county team based on those comments. Maybe time to add a West Meath jersey to the santa list to hang alongside the Clonguish one.

I'll have to ask Santa for a Clonguish one to hang first.
Would someone please post up some evidence to show me I'm from Newtown?
I am starting to believe I am from there because of everyone telling me I'm from there!!
All these years I've been living up the road from the 98 and now ye are telling me that's a part of Clonguish!!
Well that's it then!
From next year you will see me in Allen Park instead of Monaduff lol

Enda Barden and Gerry Donnelly did play in that final.
And I didn't say Gerry Donnelly was captain, I just said he lifted the cup.

He won't be in with the county this year for the league and doubtful if he'll be there for the championship.
We'll see how this plays out.

"It was a proud moment for her when their captain, who later transferred to us Gerry Donnelly, lifted the cup"... Their captain was Benny Reilly!!! Midfield was Gerry Donnelly and Ray McCormack. Enda Barden was centre half forward that day (not midfield) - He scored 1-2 and won man of the match. Lorcan wasn't involved at all with Clonguish by then. The joys of memory!

He must be spending too much time in the 98

That was my first year that I remember going to Clonguish games. I thought Enda was wing forward? We had a very young team that year but had experience up the middle. James Gregg in goals, Gerry Donnelly and Ray McCormack midfield, Benny Reilly centre forward and Mick Mulvey full forward. And yes, Lorcan Barden had moved to Round Towers in Kildare the previous year. Won Division 4 that year unbeaten along with the Junior. Upset Dromard in the Leader Cup that year as well!

Have not much at all. Our management team is going to be the same I think. Cannot see why it would not to be honest.

Next year could be Longford's last in National Hurling League.
See link

"CCCC are recommending that any county with fewer than five clubs fielding teams should participate in an expanded Lory Meagher Cup competition only in a season, with money saved then ringfenced for hurling development. CCCC estimate that up to €1m is spent preparing and equipping the five hurling teams (Louth, Leitrim, Longford, Cavan and Fermanagh) per year and if some of that could be set aside in an effort to grow the base locally, it would serve the game better. In its presentation, CCCC pointed out that up to 25% of players on those county teams did not play with clubs in that county and qualified under the 'parent' rule".

Could these four counties come together and start a proper league and championship. I know before leitrim and longford held their own league competitions not sure if this still happens
