Replying To lugdrum:  "I attended the minor game this evening in Castlebar. I actually felt sorry for the Leitrim players that are asked to play that brand of football. Playing keep ball on your own 45m line and kicking the ball back to the goalkeeper almost 2 in 5 passes went back to him. tried to play damage limitation. You have senior and u20 management team trying to play attacking football and then you have this muck at minor level. How does anyone think that is developing players. If Leitrim have any cop they will run that set up this evening and at least let the team play with a bit of freedom."
Very disappointing performance from a Zminor team comprising squads from Humphrey Kelleher Cup winners and last years Fr. Manning team who reached Final. Expected much more from them . Congratulations to this years U16 Who defeated Offaly despite being short some of the Minors. We are making progress at underage level.

I had wondered, without looking it up or knowing anything about it, whether the other counties in Connacht just hadn't bothered to enter this U20 C hurling championship, which left us as the only Connacht representatives and a slot in the All-Ireland semi-final. But then I did look it up, specifically by looking for results on the official GAA website, and I was surprised not to be disappointed. It seems that back in March, Monaghan beat Longford and Fermanagh had a walkover against Louth, and then yesterday, Monaghan beat Cavan, and Leitrim stormed to a 3-14 to 0-7 victory over Fermanagh! So we're into an All-Ireland final on May 25th or 26th. Hon Leitrim!

Humphrey Kelleher, Manning Cup etc etc mean nothing when championship comes along. Those competitors are normally played between weaker counties so you can easily get a very false image of the team. I'm not sure where the progress at underage level is?. Leitrim finished bottom of the U.20 ( I know you beat Mayo in the round robin but then lost to them later) and probably will finish the same in the minor.

I disagree with you.

The Fr Manning Cup involves counties such as Offaly ,Westmeath Longford Roscommon .
Sligo used the Fr Manning Cup as a stepping stone to winning the Connacht minor and subsequent U20 titles.

The fact is if Leitrim can't compete at U15/16 they will never have any chance at minor U20 level.

True the minor team has disappointed however I am not sure they will finish last as if we end up playing Sligo again we should win this time.one.

The reality is good players are coming through, however at underage numbers count and unfortunately Leitrim just don't have the number of players.

One thing that would help is strength and conditioning, an area we are behind.

A turn around LOL God you really know little about Leitrim football and would have little interest outside of your hero being involved.

Longford beat Leitrim by a point in last years Fr Manning with Leitrim possibly being the better team , Leitrim kicked lots of wides which proved costly. Same Longford Team in Leinster semi final having beaten Dublin in their group. They built on the Fr Manning Cup success

The time has come to abandon the bloody oul' football and pour the money into the hurling.
If those young lads were given 10% of the funding the footballers get we'd shortly be troubling Limerick or Clare.

As ever, it'll be all aboard the bandwagon as usual.

Any word out of the camp on how prep is going for the Taltiean Cup. If we beat Waterford on Saturday that should be enough for a play off. 2 really interesting games then to see if we have improved since we played Longford in the league and then the Kildare game will give us a flavour of what Div 3 will look like next year. I'm looking forward to this comp and also to see how a couple of the younger u20s get on. The likes of Darren Cox with his pace and passing ability should get some game time and give him an idea of the level he needs to get to for next season. I thought the corner back from Allen Geals was very good and lighting fast. It has been a problem area for Leitrim senior so I'd also throw him in for some game time. Dare I say it try and get Keith Berine back in for this comp and get him back on board for next year. He's playing for Mohil currently. Jordan Renoylds another

With the five week break between the Sligo game and the start of the Tailteann Cup theres been a lot of talk about Club Footballl etc.

A lot of scared and worrisome talk may I add. Not since the 80s have I heard so many from a vast array of clubs fearing for their future. We can talk about the highs and lows of the Leitrim senior team etc. but the bread and butter and what sustains a lot of peoples daily lives in Leitrim is the club game and the sense of community it brings.

Leitrim Gaels for the last 10 years have been the model club - growing rapidly, good underage structures, great facilities and producing players for our Inter County Teams while also beginning to feel like they could challenge for the Senior Club Championship.

This year they will be without.

David Bruen,
James Flynn,
Brendan Flynn,
Enda Moreton,
Colm Moreton
Aaron McLoughlin

And maybe more. That is crippling.

If you think that's just one club that been effected Drumreilly now have to train with Corlough (West Cavan) to make up the numbers for a training session.

I'll go on.

Aughawillan who along with Mohill have been the main force in the last 10 years even though they are the smallest senior club in the county are now teethering due to injury, age and emigration.

They will be without

Rory McTague,
Noel Plunkett
Stephen Gilheany
Sean Flanagan

And more to injury for this years championship. The word is that 2/3 of their main Inter County Players will not be available in 2025 due to emigration.

It goes on. No club hasn't been effected.

Because they have such large playing numbers it is forgotten that Ballinamore have been decimated by emigration. Nearly all the players I will mention below would start for their senior team.

Oisin McCaffery
Brian Leydon
Donal Feely
Mark O'Reilly
Conor Moran
Niall McGovern*
Barry McGovern

Allen Gaels:
Thomas Mulvey
Kevin Moran
Diarmuid McKiernan
Ciaran Walsh

St Marys:
Michael McWeeney
Daire Farrell
Conor Farrell

Mohill:
Johnathan Reynolds
Oisin Madden
Keith Beirne** and Jordan Reynolds are supposedly going stateside

Aughnasheelin:
Ciaran Cullen
Conor Cullen
Aaron Hoare
Cormac Sammon
Ben McGirl

Gort:
Jack Heslin
Francis Flynn*

I'm sure there is more players from other clubs that I have not highlighted.

I understand the reasons for emigration etc. and its great to see young Leitrim people doing so well for themselves abroad.

But what I don't understand Is the lack of a response from the Gaa as a whole and when it comes to Leitrim the County Board being proactive.
The reality is Clubs are going to fold and amalgamations are going to have to occour. This will be messy and can become bitter if not handled correctly. This is where the County Board need to step up and take charge and show leadership otherwise the core community organisation which is the GAA in Leitrim will be severely damaged and may not recover.

The GAA, the local councillors nor the government care about the depopulation of rural areas. One off housing a thing of the past but at least it will give the forestry space to full plant Leitrim...

Councillor in North Leitrim speaking about one off houses.. not isolated to just North Leitrim but the whole county.

"If we beat Waterford on Saturday that should be enough for a play off": It should be but it won't be for one third place team, as Tipperary found out last year, finishing in third place and ranking bottom of the third place teams. As I said earlier, we need a convincing win just in case the other two results don't go our way.

Depopulation has been occurring in rural parishes for ages, and many of those in the council have been there a generation. Nothing is changing. So what can one do?

I've been talking about this on this forum for years... clubs will have to amalgamate... it's going to happen if the GAA is to be sustained in Leitrim. I have argued that there's too many clubs in Leitrim as it is anyhow and inveriably this feeds into the lower standard of football vs neighbouring counties and onwards up to county level. It's interesting that Drumreilly are training down in Corlough... and passing two club grounds on their way out there... tells its own story. The mens game in the county will likely have to go the way of the ladies game... there's lots of examples of women's clubs having to amalgamate.... St Bridget's... St Joseph's... St Francis' and so on. It's going to happen and there's going to have to be some adult conversations held in the coming years... I can see it being very contentious.

Seems to be none of this talk in Longford. The difference being of course seems to be very little issue in getting planning permission in rural areas there in comparison to Leitrim. So you have a parish like Bornacoola which is partly in Longford with two different planning regimes.

I've been beating the same drum about amalgamations but I don't think the County board are serious about progressing football in this county. Otherwise it would have been done 10 years ago. The writing was on the wall a long time ago but we've continuously buried our heads in the sand.
I suspect that we enjoy playing the role of the plucky loser. We get excited with any bit of national media attention and revert to the excuse of our population when the inevitable happens. Our recent day out in the big smoke is a case in point.

Emigration is certainly a huge problem but you're also dealing with a generation that have the world at their feet and are intent on success. Leitrim GAA is deluding itself in thinking that the pride of pulling on the jersey will suffice for these players.

This is it exactly. Smaller families as well as emigration means not enough young lads coming through, even before you start talking about ability. A lot of the lads mentioned in the post above went for a change of scenery no doubt, not just economic reasons. it is inevitable for players in their 20s to want to spend some time in UK/US/AUS before they are too old to do it and football is not good enough a reason to want to stay around anymore, especially a county where success is limited. joining up smaller clubs is the only way to go to give everyone a shot at playing intermediate/senior, especially when we have cut the numbers per competition but I also see that as progress, kill or be killed
