Watched it back again tonight. Really nothing between the sides for the opening 55 minutes then our error count increased and got outscored 1-6 to 0-1 in those final 15 minutes. Monaghan over the 70 minutes got 1-14 from turnovers and basic mistakes from us. We kicked 5 short and had 8 wides along with the 18 scores which was 31 shots in total.

Fitness issues? Planning to peak for AI series? Am I grasping at straws? Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2180 - 31/03/2025 11:21:15 2599649 Link 0 |
Fitness more important than ever under these new rules and the four All Ireland semi finalists this summer will be four who have the best fitness and conditioning. What I know is we increased the intensity in training in the middle of that league campaign with the championship in mind. As ever best not to fully judge us until after the All Ireland series. We have clearly plenty of issues to sort out at the moment but IMO If we can go on reach the last 8 on top of promotion back to Div 1 I will consider it a good year.

Out 4 weekends in a row which isn't easy. But they surely would have been aiming for that scenario at the start of the league. Had they took care of business against Meath and Cavan they could have rested things a bit for Westmeath but that didn't happen. We make life very hard for ourselves. Playing short ball and running the ball on a big pitch like Croker instead of kicking it. We seem to love that laborious attack. Then if they drop a shot short or get turned over they are having to leg it back down the other end to defend. They were running up and down that field on Saturday like mad things and probably no surprise energy levels dropped off.

A lot of our problems are solvable. A big one is becoming more efficient in how we use the ball.

We got to the quarter finals last year. I think for this team to show progress, we need a semi final. We'd also love a Connacht title. We haven't won Connacht for 6 years but we'll likely have to beat both Galway and Mayo which is always a tough ask. Davy has not been lucky with Connacht championship draws.

We beat both Galway,Mayo away to win Connacht in 2019 the first time we did that since the 70s. We haven't reached the last 8 of the championship for consecutive years for 6 years so It will very much be progress especially with the issues that need sorting out at both ends of the field. London first up this Saturday where we'll hopefully get in and out of Ruislip without any drama and any further injuries The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 3986 - 31/03/2025 15:40:29 2599740 Link 0 |
Yes 2019 was the first time we beat both Galway and Mayo away since 1972. I'd love a Connacht title. I'd love a first championship win in Croke Park since 1980. I'd love a first championship semi final since 1991. Doesn't look like any of that but a lot can change in a few weeks. I don't think Mayo have a lot. Galway started the League well but tailed off. Perhaps Roscommon can move on from poor League form to peak in the championship. That's what we hope for.

Mayo and Tyrone are two teams that didn't reach the Alll Ireland Quarter finals last year and since Quarter finals was introduced in 2001 I don't think they have gone two years in a row without reaching them and I don't expect that to change this summer. We were way off on Saturday night, was nothing to do with fitness levels, reffingmad (Roscommon) - Posts: 377 - 31/03/2025 20:17:31 2599815 Link 1 |
We all see and know that Roscommon are not at the necessary level. The hope is that we're being primed to peak for the championship. That may be a forlorn hope because form can't be switched on like a light. We'll get out of London okay on Saturday but Galway in Pearse stadium will be the test of whether Roscommon have been waiting for the championship to show what they can do.

4 or 5 goal chances on Saturday? Monaghan scored a goal from their only real chance in that game and it came off the back of a point effort from Roscommon that dropped short. For Roscommon the Fallon point first half that flew over the bar when it should have nestled in the net after a rare Beggan mistake. Both Donie Smith and Ben O'Carroll blazed efforts wayward 2nd half when it was opportunities to score goals.

We certainly did not give up 4 or 5 goal chances to Monaghan last Saturday and we created more chances ourselves. I don't really remember Conor Carroll having to carry out major saves either. The 6 two pointers (12 points - equivalent to four goals) won the match for Monaghan. Having been at all league matches, one major issue is that we have not taken several clear cut goals chances over the league, primarily by our forwards shooting too high (easy to save) or wide. I was in Croke Park on Saturday and Sunday and the four teams that won (Limerick, Monaghan, Offaly, Kerry) took the majority of their goal chances. Some additional shooting practice is required rather than blame the defence all the time. Work is required at both end's of the pitch which is achievable. letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 703 - 01/04/2025 08:06:31 2599865 Link 1 |
I see ye're going doing a warmup playing indoor soccer Brentford on Friday. Great to see them letting a GAA team use their facilities. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7863 - 01/04/2025 09:59:27 2599879 Link 0 |

No we didn't give up many goal chances last weekend but I do think we give the player shooting so much space and time With no pressure or anything on them. That won't work In a couple of weeks. I was very optimistic at the start of the year with everyone back playing we have a strong panel but can anyone say we have improved in the last couple of years? I think we are gone backwards and look like a team lost in attack and defense. I know lots on here are saying wait and judge us on championship form but the same was said last year and even though we got to last 8 we beat a poor Tyrone team to get there. Il be praying our lads can turn on when it matters most but it's not that easy

I'd agree with that and ur right we said the same last year during league campaign For me it's not even about winning so much as form and competitiveness and a bit of toughness about us - none of the top teams will fear us come championship whilst we got the win against a Tyrone team in disarray we folded totally against Armagh in the qtr finals last year - and unfortunately I'm not convinced that's going to change this year so whether we get to a qtr final or last 16 Or whatever - it's the going out with a whimper is the really frustrating thing and it really is starting to feel like a team that's never really fulfilled it's potential but we'll see Hope the weather stays like this for the weekend in London ! When all Is said and done I love supporting the rossies enjoy the weekend anyone travelling ! rossy15 (Roscommon) - Posts: 639 - 01/04/2025 14:13:42 2599945 Link 1 |
I've seen it a lot from you rossie supporters after any win it's because the team was poor. Tyrone in Omagh in a knock out championship game aren't poor. Rossies on the day was good defensively and shooting efficiency was good the problem at the moment is Roscommon are the opposite and firstly need to use the London game this week to restore a bit of confidence and sharpen up the shooting.
