Good away win and decent score 2-18 (24) on the road. The 8 point cushion was a help at half time as against the wind and down to 14 men since with a harsh red for Keith Doyle could have been tricky. Steady rather than spectacular 2nd half and winning it 1-6 to 0-7. While Cox and Smiths did the damage on the score board i also thought McCormack, Hughes, Harney, Nolan was among our stand outs players today. The improvement with our new midfield has been a massive plus in this league. Harder challenges ahead of them but early signs are encouraging. Only conceded 1 goal too is a good sign stack has been phenomenal and newbies Hughes and McCormack excellent. sourmilk93 (Roscommon) - Posts: 1205 - 20/03/2022 18:14:38 2405971 Link 0 |
Galway have a League Final and Mayo in the championship to come. Hard to see them being too worried about next Sunday. A big chance for Roscommon to get back to Division 1.

Momentum is everything in sport and no manager wants a winning run to end, whatever team goes out for Galway next Sunday will be putting their hand up for that championship match and those that don't preform will play themselves out. I'd prefer if we had promotion already wrapped up and both Derry,Clare games was there to be won but it is what it is now and at least its in our own hands.

As a Galway man I think Galway will rest 6/7 of there regulars and conroy got red card as well comer went off inj he won't play be good see 3 Connacht teams in top division next year, Kickitout (Galway) - Posts: 1052 - 20/03/2022 20:16:15 2406017 Link 0 |
Granted we will want to win but PJ will play the squad. Shane Walsh named today but did not line out. Not sure if it is an injury as he came off injured against Clare. Sean Kelly went off with what appeared to be an injury while Damo went off with I gather a hamstring injury. I would be surprised if ye don't beat us as April 24th forefront to our thoughts. For all the criticism of us both inside and outside we have answered the naysayers so far. In saying that how we could do with Peter Cooke or Tom Flynn as we are short in midfield backup.

I think Roscommon will beat Galway next Sunday. Hope I'm right.

Good result against a limited outfit to be fair. While I don't think Doyle can have too many complaints, especially after getting the first yellow for that type of tackle, I thought the ref was a bit inconsistent after that, could have given out a few more cards for similar tackles. One such tackle ended Heneghan's afternoon early. D.Hyde (Roscommon) - Posts: 267 - 20/03/2022 21:06:27 2406043 Link 0 |
Be great to have 3 Connacht teams heading for Croke Park in 2 weeks time!

I think we (Galway) should give the panel a run in the Hyde against ye. I get the momentum thing but take it as a day to give the rest of the lads some NFL experience. They've been putting in the hard slog for months too and deserve some game time in the league, if they can match up then great but we already have promotion secured and, to be honest, I'd be delighted to see Roscommon go up too. I've no grá for Derry after that disgusting eye gouging act on Sean Kelly yesterday. Brutal stuff. Ros to go up too. Bigger days to come for both of us. Yes. The thing us and Ros are challenged with is can we go to the next level irrespective of who wins the provincial title. Coming out of the Clare match last week a Banner mate asked me what I would consider success/progress in 2022. His view was that promotion certainly but a very competitive performance in an all ireland semi final where the game is in the melting pot may be more palatable than winning Connacht but going out in a whimper like ourselves and Ros have done most yrs when we won out province. It is an interesting perspective.

You also argued strongly with my view that Galway wouldn't get promotion with a game to spare. Div 2 was Galways level you suggested and naming games that Galway would likely slip up in and in the end all was easily. My latest prediction is regardless of what team Galway line out with will be strong and Joyce and his management will be looking for a performance. The Rossies will have to play very well in what is a must win game for them and that itself brings its own pressures. Gaa_lover (USA) - Posts: 3586 - 21/03/2022 12:15:24 2406155 Link 0 |
To score 2-18 while playing with fourteen men for 56 minutes was very impressive, especially when we had only one wide in the entire game. We also had a good range of 12 scorers. I thought that the first booking on Keith Doyle was very harsh and it was a severe learning experience for him that as a tall man, he must learn to tackle a little lower. It should also be noted that only 3 teams have gone undefeated so far in the four divisions; Roscommon, Galway and Kerry. letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 716 - 21/03/2022 16:05:36 2406273 Link 2 |
Galway already beaten us this year in the FBD final and we seen then how serious Galway management took that game and the effort the players put in to know Galway was looking to hit the ground running for the NFL. The fitness and conditioning and hard tackling is up there with Mayo right now. That match in Jan Comer didn't play (injured) Shane Walsh didn't start the likes of Seán Fitzgerald,Dylan McHugh,Cormac McWalter. Owen Gallagher,Finnian Ó Laoi, Patrick Kelly, Tony Gill,Cathal Sweene,Tomo Culhane, Dylan Canney, Jack Glynn all featured in that game highlighting the strength in depth the tribesmens have now and the losses of Cooke,Flynn aren't really felt at all. Sunday is more about us though and needing to improve our 70 minutes performance as the way we performed in our last two home games against Clare,Derry will not be good enough to win on Sunday. I agree totally, an eye gouge should carry a minimum of one year ban, however the gaa have proven in previous years to be very lenient on this issue, one of our own got off very light a few years ago with only a 1 match ban.

You will find though we are light on midfield options without the two absentees. In fairness Matthew Tierney for instance is a wonderful footballer but not a midfielder and playing him there would rob us of a key half forward in terms of a scoring threat. We have depth in other areas but not midfield. Similarly Sean Kelly has lined out in a few matches at no.3 ( to compensate for the long term absentee Mulkerrins and the short term injury to Sean Fitzgerald) but actually played further out the field. We are better than last year (so far) but need more depth in certain areas.

Because that wasn't eye gouging and the trial by social media meant the GAA had to give at least a one match ban. Seen the Derry incident, very clear that McKinless applied pressure on Sean Kelly's eye it's what he was sent off and the reaction of the Galway players to it said it all. He'll be lucky to avoid a long ban. Gaa_lover (USA) - Posts: 3586 - 22/03/2022 12:37:32 2406436 Link 2 |
We need to improve massively if we are to beat Galway. We are one win away from promotion without playing well really. We played well in stages but I think we haven't really hit the level we need to yet. One thing that is very concerning is teams can seem to run straight through us. In every game this year teams have been cutting us open. Galway will do damage on Sunday if we stand off them like we have been doing all year. dave1988 (Roscommon) - Posts: 1234 - 22/03/2022 19:39:34 2406584 Link 0 |
Problem is we have only 2 defenders Davy Murray and the impressive new man McCormack. Brian Stack is a very good footballer and will make a decent fist of any position. Dalys, Hughes are middle 8 attacking wing back type players who don't do defending very well. I'm surprised Lyons who seems to be on the bench every game isn't getting game time as he's the sort who tackles and gets turnovers. Anyway Promotion is in our in hands so hopefully we'll drive to victory against a team already promoted whose hearts and minds might be more focused on Mayo and 24th of April.
