Well now the dust has settled on a hectic 24 hours of action for roscommon teams with mixed fortunes. SmokieRoss (Roscommon) - Posts: 279 - 01/02/2022 20:42:07 2397826 Link 0 |
I'm expecting a big Meath performance. It's not in Meath teams to give up. I'm expecting a really close game and it could go either way.

I would also have a similar view on ruane, hearing lots of praise for him here but In all the games I have watched I think he offers very little if anything at all, HB line these days is where a lot of a teams attacking play starts, Richard Hughes gave a few great examples of this on Sunday.... would like to see Cathal Kenny from oran get a chance, an intelligent player and has been a brilliant performer at wing back for his Club for a few years... Im going for a Rossie win on Sunday by 2

Fair enough to say Ruane and Heneghan unlikely to keep their starting places. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2235 - 02/02/2022 10:28:42 2397871 Link 0 |
Nothing to say Heneghan and Ruane wont make it but hope to see more improvement over the next few months. Deserving our their places on the squad anyway. I can see Ben O'Carroll starting this weekend instead of Heneghan but agree they should be left to u20s. sourmilk93 (Roscommon) - Posts: 1205 - 02/02/2022 10:56:12 2397876 Link 0 |
That makes no difference. And if Roscommon were playing any other county in Meath position I'd lump on them. However I will never bet against my own. But honestly I don't think you realize how bad we were on Sunday. Ask any of ur old county men who has been on this forum for long time. This is not me I'm always hugely optimistic when it comes to Meath. Blindingly so at times. But what I seen on Sunday a poor junior b team would beat us.

Meath are without players also. Mickey Newman has retired and Seamus lavin Meaths first choice corner back has took the year off the panel. Meath are missing 4 midfielders all injured. They are Brian Menton, Ronan Jones, Brian Conlon, Jack Flynn. And Meath are without first choice full back Conor McGill and James McEntee who are both injured. Roscommon are favourites, Roscommon have excellent record of getting promotion from div 2.

Meath lads, did young Mattimoe, son of a Roscommon man ever make it beyond the U21s? Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2235 - 02/02/2022 13:21:11 2397945 Link 0 |
Agree. We are very low on important players. I just can't see how we could win.

Every team is without players currently. From the Meath game, we were missing Damien Comer, Johnny Heaney, Sean Fitzgerald, Sean Mulkerrins, Jack Glynn and seeing as you're listing unavailable players, Peter Cooke as well. I might be missing a few as well. 4 of those players are certain starters if available. Listing lads who have retired is a bit of a stretch. I might as well name Gary O'Donnell in that case. Mulkerrins is out for the year due an injury he picked up playing Sigerson for NUIG. It looks like Mayo's Tommy Conroy could be in the same boat after last night. Mentons dad is a native of Curraghboy.

To be fair two rookies in Glynn, Fitzgerald hope to be certain starters than are that. Their replacements from the FBD final was the seasoned/experienced Kieran Molloy and John Daly. I'd agree listing lads who have retired is a bit of a stretch and I'd include those that opted out in that. We have Shane Killoran, Cathal Compton, Tadgh O'Rourke, Ciarán Lennon whom was was unable to commit and of course the recently retired Cathal Cregg. However is the terms of missing players I'd just list those that should be part of the panel this year. A disjointed Cork lacking any direction didn't test us at all last Sunday so we still don't know how this new look Roscommon team will react when pushed all the way. If Sunday become a competitive contest the match will likely be decided on the impact off the bench and 10 of our 11 subs last Sunday had never played a NFL game before. It was the other 4 who are the certain starters if available, Comer, Heaney, Mulkerrin and Cooke. Fitzgerald and Glynn are only young lads but have done well in their limited time so far. Conroy of Mayo is confirmed as having done his cruciate. It's awful unfortunate. The importance of having a quality panel can't be overstated. Ya it's bad news for the young lad and a tough one for mayo. Hard replace a talent like that. Did he play two games in 48 hours or something?

Will there be any changes to the starting 15 Sunday? Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2235 - 03/02/2022 10:15:45 2398060 Link 0 |
Assume you're talking about Seamus Mattimoe, and he was in and out of the senior panel a couple of times and never made a sufficient impact to be there for longer. A great club player but transition to county hasn't been kind to him. Has been tried by both Mick O'Dowd and Andy McEntee. Maybe with a new manager from next year he'll got another shot but probably too late in his career to make the big break through

Exactly. The notion that we were near full strength last Sunday is misleading. You are spot on. At least 3 of the 5 players you have listed in the first part of your thread will start come championship barring injury etc. I keep hearing how other teams are missing this and that. All teams by and large are missing some key personnel. The trick of course is to have depth and while I can't really speak for Meath and the Rossies on that front I do feel we are building a decent squad full of youth notwithstanding the significant losses of Mulkerrins and Cooke.

Wouldn't expect there to be although it's hard to know what they will do with returning lads from both clubs. We seen during the week the effect too many games have this this or year so maybe letting some of the lads take the weekend off and have them return gradually for Clare game in two weeks would be sensible. Hopefully Cox can play some part this weekend as I expect it to be a tougher game and one which we will need more experience. The backs all done well enough to start again Sunday to be fair but a Daly / or two wouldn't go amiss! I did hear that one of them is going travelling, I would assume it's Ronan or Conor, the fella who said it wouldn't be able to tell which one is which! Meath will no doubt bring a lot more then they showed last weekend and by no means will it be an easy game. The bench wasn't needed last weekend but was very inexperienced and I wouldn't want to be relying on it.

Damien Comer, Johnny Heaney, Sean Fitzgerald, Sean Mulkerrins, Jack Glynn, Peter Cooke is the players he named At least 3 or 4 of those players? Only Comer you can say for certain will be starting if fit come April against Mayo and getting Comer fit is the biggest issue. Galway are working from a strong and settled starting 15 right now fitness wise they seem well ahead of the rest in Div 2. Meath are currently missing S Lavin, C McGill and B Menton that started in the championship last year. Roscommon are without C Daly, D Murray, R Daly, N Daly, C Cox, C Murtagh, D Murtagh that are deemed starters. Gaa_lover (USA) - Posts: 3586 - 04/02/2022 16:43:49 2398331 Link 0 |
