Pleased with that win, had to ship the blow of losing Conor Cox midweek in training yet the Smiths and McKeon step up to deliver the scores.

With a makeshift defence it was good to hold Cork to 0-10, Hurley their best forward marked out of the game from play by Stack. McCormack and Hughes played well in defence also, only one goal chance we gave up and that came from a mixed up when offloading possession.

On to Navan next and Meath will be like a wounded animal after the defeat they shipped today. I don't expect the Faithleachs, Pearses lads to return until round 3.

Delighted with the win today and glad to be proven wrong when I felt Cork would beat us. Roscommon were really comfortable for most of that game today. Huge performances from the Smiths, Stack and McKeon but also hugely impressed with Eoin McCormack, Richard Hughes and Dylan Ruane. Our defence was generally excellent today. Conditions were atrocious for a lot of the game but yet Donie was excellent on the free taking bar one miss. Cork couldn't handle Enda when he ran at them, what an athlete and baller he is when he hits form. The only real negative was the kickouts. I like Colm Lavin and for the most part has been very good for Ros but I think he pondered far too long today with kickouts and seemed very uncomfortable under high ball coming in to him. Just looked like a guy lacking in confidence. I feel young Carroll could end up taking the no.1 position this year yet. Otherwise delighted to be back in the hallowed ground of the Hyde to witness a great start to our league campaign. I just hope we can follow it up now in Navan next with another big win. That would set us up nicely and with the Faithleachs and Pearses lads to come back in for round 3 most likely, hopefully we can be in a position to push on for promotion back to Div 1

Unless there is a huge backlash I'd unfortunately expect a big win for Roscommon. Laois in obc wasn't a one off it would appear.
I'll go in hope but nothing more. I think we may be heading for tailteann cup unfortunately.

In the last couple of days there has been criticism of three goal keepers in Roscommon, some of it based on hear-say! These are all amateur players/individuals who give up a lot of time and finance to try and represent their families/club/Roscommon, and I think that some of the criticism is unfair. Management see all these guys in club matches, Sigerson cup and training, so I am happy to let them make a call on it. Why not praise who you think should be in goal rather than run down the person you think should be a sub. (Glass half full rather than glass half empty approach might be better, and fairer on the players).
I think that the conversation should be broadened to consider how we select our goal keepers in Roscommon. If you look at the last four All Star keepers, Rory Beggan (2018), Stephen Cluxton (2019), Raymond Galligan (2020) Neil Morgan (2021), they are all very comfortable on the ball, because three of them play or have played out field for their clubs on a regular basis. No doubt there are many outfield players in Roscommon who could potentially make good goal keepers depending on what the game-plan is. If for example only, we consider two recently retired Roscommon footballers and two existing players and see could they potentially bring something to the Roscommon game plan as keepers?

Donie Shine: Commanding in the square, long and accurate kick out, long distance free taker.
Cathal Cregg: Strong on the ball, accurate kick out, could counter attack at pace and with confidence.
Ciaran Murtagh: Very accurate kick out, confident on the ball, very accurate kick passer when going out the field.
Enda Smith: Good height and commanding under the high ball, could counter attack at real pace. I do not think that David Clifford would relish trying to catch Enda, which would give the full backs a few breathers on a big pitch. (Remember Philly McMahon & The Gooch)

I am not suggesting that Enda or Ciaran should now play in goals for Roscommon. I just feel that management should consider all options like Dublin, Tyrone, Cavan when forming a goal keeping panel. No doubt a few posters will think I have lost it!
