JimB1991 - As Bill Shankley once said "1st is 1st, 2nd is nowhere" while we had a great team that should have won at least one all Ireland we didn't win it despite having plenty of chances to do so. We will be remembered for failure and laughed and mocked at as a county until we go on and silence everyone by actually winning one. I just hope I'm alive to see it when it happens. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11647 - 08/06/2025 18:52:09 2615848 Link 0 |

We'd have probably found a way to beat ourselves again.

While I understand your sentiment Yewtree I can certainly say that the Mayo team from 2011 are NOt and should not be laughed at.They gave great entertainment and were a whisker away from the holy grail. As a proud Kerryman I have to admit you were the only team to put fear into the great Dublin team and should have won at least one of those All Irelands. As a Kwrryman I have been so lucky to see Kerry win so many big days but there is a beauty in just being there too.A semi final loss is hard as you miss the buzz the build up and the razzmatazz of making a final. That Mayo team gave their supporters those great days. I hope you and the real Mayo supporters enjoy an All Ireland win sooner rather than later (not at our expense though). You all deserve that. We do like the fact the fact that they were second best team for a number of years as no prizes for second! They were second best to Kerry, Dublin, Donegal and Tyrone don't forget! Galway have lost plenty of finals too but at least we have got over the line a few times!

At the end of the day the winners are listed on the roll of honour with two teams dominating and the rest playing for scraps. Galway with all our losses are still 3rd on 9 wins in over 130 years which says a lot for all those outside Dublin and Kerry. Mayo missed all of their many many chances and may not ever again get so many chances in a relatively short period of time. Its hard to win outside of the Dubs and Kerry, but even for Kerry the win sequences have dried up. Its likely that northern teams could go on to win a fair number of the next 10 all Irelands with Tyrone, Armagh and Donegal all strong contenders. I still think we have a good chance to go all the way this year, given a bit of luck on the injuries side. The players deserve huge credit for the way they kept battling right to the end against Derry and this in itself will give them a lot of confidence. PJ and team management also deserve massive credit for the late changes made. Hopefully, a big following in Cavan. Really (Galway) - Posts: 641 - 09/06/2025 13:21:42 2616100 Link 1 |

The biggest fear Dublin ever experienced in those years was the end of the 2019 drawn game v Kerry. Mayo never once went into added time (or close to added time) in any of those games ahead. Kerry did twice. Ultimately both could never beat Dublin for that period but both were equally as close (or far away depending on your perspective)

The team I'd like see starting I know it won't but this is my team think definitely need changes Flaherty McGrath. Fitz. Glynn Mchugh. Daly. Kelly Maher / Mcdaid Tierney. Cooke. Darcy Finnert. Walsh. Thompson The one position I was hesitant in was Glynn only reado. I picked him as I think silke or o flaherty prob offer more coming on i definitely think they need put Mcdaid to midfield his best position and Galway as a team would benefit from him driving forward and i believe himself and Maher actually play well together Kickitout (Galway) - Posts: 1091 - 09/06/2025 19:58:40 2616240 Link 0 |
1. Flaherty (heard he's going well) 2. Johnny McGrath 3. Sean Fitz 4. Liam Silke ( will pick up Grugan wherever he goes) 5. Dylan Mchugh 6. John Daly ( has to get back in going on form) 7. Sean Kelly ( expect him to pick Rian O Neill) 8. Maher 9. Mcdaid 10. Matthew Tierney 11. Conroy (but wouldn't be surprised if he's dropped). 12. Darcy 13. Finnerty 14. Comer / Walsh ( one of these will be left in reserve) 15. Matthew Thompson I expect changes on Saturday. PJ has to try get things sparked up.
