Division 1 status is on the line now but no complaints we had our chances today, congrats Derry maroondiesel (Mayo) - Posts: 1222 - 25/02/2024 15:33:57 2528003 Link 0 |
We lost but it was a funny game. I thought we were the better team for good parts of the game but mistakes doubled down on (Kieran) and wild misses (Niall) and suddenly we were on the back foot. JahTribe (Galway) - Posts: 155 - 25/02/2024 15:40:34 2528005 Link 0 |
The whole game turned on those few minutes... Dalys bad miss, Molloy made a bad pass after that, then Molloy fouled got the black card, penalty.. Another black card, we're down to 13 men.. Hard goin in fairness at that point against a virtually full strength Derry, it could have finished up worse, in fairness the lads died with their boots on, Maher covered SOME ground though without due regognition a lot of the time Imv a top man, I'm not as pessimistic as I was after our first day out

Another woeful performance in a collection of woeful performances. Gilberto_Eire (Galway) - Posts: 80 - 25/02/2024 15:48:07 2528009 Link 2 |
I didn't think Niall's was a wild miss at all. Looked like two very controlled misses to me, but misses nonetheless!! Certainly wouldn't be filing either finish under the 'great touch for a big man' umbrella!

Some very poor individual errors cost us the game alright. I thought we did a lot right and battled very hard around the middle. On the main incidents in the second half: WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2253 - 25/02/2024 15:52:14 2528012 Link 0 |
Another disappointing day can't understand why management named conroy to start when he out injured same sort of messing as last year v Armagh it's pure stupidity makes no sense ,, playing Molloy in forwards another mad decision can't understand how Rory Cunningham not getting more tome 5 mins he a natural forward ,, I know Galway probably missing 6/7 players but the big prob is Padraig Joyce not able pick players in there best position so when everyone is back god know Whete he play some lads anything is possible,,need win next week or division 2 next year ,, Kickitout (Galway) - Posts: 1020 - 25/02/2024 16:19:27 2528025 Link 2 |
Teamsheets have to be handed in by Wednesday and there was a chance Conroy might have been fit enough at that stage. If he didn't name him then, he wouldn't have been able to play today even if he was fit. Not much risk in naming him.

We did score when they had 14...

One point?... Hardly anything to celebrate. I didn't say we didn't score at all against 14. We scored nothing of note in that period was my point.

Some of these comments are ridiculous. I was pretty happy with the overall performance considering our absentee list. Bar the penalty and mullkerins very soft black card we'd have been right in it. Derry had pretty much a full complement. I wouldn't fear them come championship. Some positives for me: John Daly was brilliant, our best player Johnny McGrath is really cementing himself as our best out and out defender, could be an opportunity for Liam Silke at wing back Maher really came into it in the second half Finnerty is showing well and if he can stay fit he will be a huge asset to us this year Good to get more minutes into Sean Kelly and Jack Glynn allstars23 (Galway) - Posts: 49 - 25/02/2024 17:03:31 2528042 Link 3 |
Can I remind several posters that Derry aren't at full strength. They are missing Lynch, McKinless who is arguably the best defender and new player Murphy who was motm against Tyrone. He has a broken finger. PattyONeill (Derry) - Posts: 259 - 25/02/2024 17:22:51 2528048 Link 1 |
Some good performances, especially Daly. Look we deserved to lose today, Derry were better. I expect a reaction from us suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1713 - 25/02/2024 17:28:52 2528050 Link 0 |
Eh, you said we didn't even score when they had 14... At that stage of the game it was 1 2 to 0 2 so no one was really setting the scoring alight.. Galwaymaster9 (Galway) - Posts: 397 - 25/02/2024 17:32:46 2528052 Link 0 |
Take Conor Glass, Roger's, McGuigan etc out of the Derry team and where would they be. Take Fenton, Con etc out of Dublin and they would be weaker too. Facts are we are missing some of our very best players. All things considered that was a decent performance and we are slowly getting a few back. If everyone is fit it will be hard to pick the best six backs for example Trucker1 (Galway) - Posts: 408 - 25/02/2024 17:33:37 2528053 Link 0 |
Ya funny enough I was fairly happy with what I saw. I thought the black card decisions were crazy even the Derry one. The turning point for me was the Niall Daly goal chance after half time, have to be finishing that. The positives. Johnny McGrath didn't give McGuigan a sniff. John Daly was the best player on the pitch and back to top form. Dylan McHugh had his best game this year. Maher and Sweeney worked very hard. The negatives Kick Outs(again) Midfield in first half(how was O'Conghaile constantly on Rogers) and Glass did a lot of damage Forward play(to be expected with all we are missing) It will be a hard team to pick when all available Can't see Fitzgerald being dropped and O'Flaherty must be close. Silke has to start and Sean Kelly so pressure will be on Molloy, McHugh and Glynn. I can't see Mulkerrin starting when all are available and I believe Hernon will be back also. We are lacking something in midfield which was obvious today watching Glass, McDaid probably the answer. smallfrank (Galway) - Posts: 461 - 25/02/2024 17:48:23 2528057 Link 0 |
In fairness McGrath has been the most consistent performer for Galway no doubt and kept Derry's best forward McGuigan quiet. Daly was back to his best after some indifferent performances so far and Maher always tries hard and puts himself about even if he is not the most skillful player in the world. However its too easy to score against Galway e.g. Mulkerrin was only trotting beside a Derry forward when he scored a handy point in the first half without any attempt to put in a tackle and the first / third goals were just too easily conceded for a side with any ambitions of an AI. Molloy is only a shadow of his old self and McHugh has lost a lot form since his injury also. The forwards seemed to have no shape whatsoever and there was a lot of the slow, lateral play that generally goes nowhere apart from when Daly was on the ball with good accurate passes inside. I wondered at one stage after about 19 mins when Galway had only 1 point scored from a free would they even score at all after that! A lot of work to do now to avoid relegation.

What's ridiculous?. Are we getting value for money?.. I believe we spent close to the most last year. Do our backs not play the ball too much and hand pass to forwards in the corner?. Bar the penalty and black card... Sure if Man United didn't concede two yesterday they'd have won. They were not contentious calls where it's and buts may be applicable. He punched a player about to shoot for goal, lucky it wasn't a red as it was dirty tbh and Mulkerrins shouldn't be up in the FF line anyway, his hand wasn't pulled in from his side, he put it in and Rogers made sure he couldn't pull it away. I find those comments ridiculous... Works both ways. Gilberto_Eire (Galway) - Posts: 80 - 25/02/2024 18:11:53 2528065 Link 0 |
No I did not... I said we couldn't score. There's a massive difference between the two. A team should be scoring more than a point every ten minutes against even numbers, against less you'd expect more consistent scoring. Hence my point we couldn't score as we had no impact with an extra player. Gilberto_Eire (Galway) - Posts: 80 - 25/02/2024 18:14:52 2528067 Link 0 |
I think we all realize that Galway missing a good few players but unfortunately we always are so no guarantee they all be Back for championship and even if they do come back a fair chance they get injured again ,be under no illusions getting relegated be a disaster ,2 home games played both lost badly snd dubs to come that won't be pretty at all Kickitout (Galway) - Posts: 1020 - 25/02/2024 18:45:24 2528075 Link 0 |
