Senior intercounty goalkeepers are bigger and hopefully braver than your average under12 net minder of course, and some of them will take up a fair bit of space once you are in position to see 'the colour of their eyes'. Daly was a bit too close to the keeper for his own liking perhaps. He needed some sort of Con O'Callaghan/Micheal Meehan style manoeuvre to go past the keeper and finish the first chance, but of course not every player has those manoeuvres either in the goalscoring game.

At the end of the day even with all the injuries to key players etc. and other players not in the same form on returning from injury, an average of 10 scores a game will not cut the mustard in Division 1 and it looks like relegation is now unavoidable. tommy k (Galway) - Posts: 3470 - 26/02/2024 10:30:02 2528238 Link 0 |
Junior B skills will let you down at this level even despite being given two chances that were harder to miss than score. backtooldwall (Galway) - Posts: 140 - 26/02/2024 10:31:16 2528239 Link 0 |
It didn't require anything too special. A hop and switch back on his left and the goalkeeper was out of the picture. Players do it regularly at all levels. When a player is on your foot and that close, whether it's a goalkeeper or anyone else, you don't kick it. It's almost a guaranteed block. To give some credit, D'Arcy finished his goal very well. Kept it low instead of blasting it as we've seen so many do over the last year. A low finish anywhere with a few feet of either post is rarely saved, even if it's a scuffed effort without much power as we saw with Con's on Saturday evening. I thought the general performance was fairly good. The lads put in a lot of hard work and never let the heads drop. We got punished badly for some very avoidable mistakes, as any top team will do. The problem here is that Daly should not be playing full forward in the first place. He is a midfielder all his club and county career to date. The amount of repetitions in training or games of being in that position for him would not be enough for him to complete this with ease - something that would be relatively easy for Shane Walsh or even Joyce when he played. You reap what you sow. Management need to look inward rather than putting square blocks in round holes. galway2015 (Galway) - Posts: 61 - 26/02/2024 11:17:32 2528265 Link 1 |
How is not the fault of the individual? They are in possession of the ball, they have to make the correct decision and execute the skill.

Hard to argue with that

Realistically though does anyone see an AI in Galway this year and the answer is a resounding no - PJ knows that more than anyone else at this stage. There was an inevitability about yesterday's game with zero entertainment and nothing to get excited about or look forward to in the future. Sounds bleak but there you go.

Good first half I thought, Daly's goal miss was a killer. Joyce should have brought on O' Corrain and Cunningham earlier - at least they are natural forwards. Cunningham did a lot of moving and has pace and quick hands which can open up defences - I think he has potential for a good impact sub if he gets more game time. hopballref (Galway) - Posts: 424 - 26/02/2024 11:38:42 2528281 Link 0 |
Gleeson, McGrath, McHugh, Daly, Maher, Heaney & Finnerty are probably the only starters come championship from that team yesterday and they had good games. A few posters on here were questioning Daly last week, might be a bit quiet this week. Molloy needs more games, place under pressure from Flaherty who again played well. Wide open at back again, they walked through us. I stand my claim that a change is needed at centre back, or at least better cover if daly is pulled out of position.

Did you have a count how many times the backs turned over Derry? Another ludicrous comment. The majority of the backs did well yesterday but the period with 13 men killed us. Stop being so pessimistic. This platform is like twitter where people only give out allstars23 (Galway) - Posts: 49 - 26/02/2024 13:07:36 2528312 Link 0 |
It's not being pessimistic, some people on here think everything will be sound when some players are back and they won't. We need to sort out centre back and forward play, cunningham deserves to start next day and I'd bring finnerty to centre forward and see can he dictate play more

Ah lad. Only parked a little on the footpath = parked on the footpath. Doesn't matter if there was still room to land a jumbo jet.

To be fair to Gleeson, He was unsighted for first goal. I think Johnny Heaney was the player right in front but not sure. Although Gleeson has improved, I still would have Conor Fla in there - he's more comfortable coming out the field.

Looks like driving instructors could be busy for while if what you state is true.Knowing the rules of the road is important when in charge of a vehicle, it could reduce the complaints about enforcement as well as accidents.

"Some huge blonde guy with a mullet" you say - the plot thickens. If he is not a member of the Galway panel he is probably a member the latest Louis Walsh boyband! lol

Totally agree with that Finnerty plays his best football for club out the field more space Galway management 2 slow 2 changes things up same players same position and how Cunningham not playing is madness struggling to score bring him on 4 mins left clueless ,, I do hope when they do actually play him he given 4 games in a row like rest of the forwards

I thought there was plenty of positives and encouragement for Galway to take out of that game yesterday. With the six named forwards many before the game wondered where the scores would come from but scored 1-11 should have scored 3-11 against a solid Derry defence.
