They could'nt have been anymore beaten around the center than we were last Saturday night. I think it would be pretty harsh to have your inter county career terminated after being given a half hour in the marquee. I dont know whether they are good enough for inter county but I would love to see them getting the chance. Joyce must have seen something in them as they both survived the big cull after the Mayo game. As a matter of interest Marooned would you be happy facing into the latter stages of the championship with our centerfield partnership a they lined out last Saturday night?

Just what this thread needs is another WUM. Both Flynn and FOC were inter County All-Ireland winners. FOC injuries hasn't help his senior career. Flynn was a more than decent senior footballer for Galway and would be featuring now if he could commit.

University of Galway knocked out of the Sigerson cup tonight. Probably a blessing in disguise for Galway seniors as lads involved can fully focus on the NFL now. Gaa_lover (USA) - Posts: 3519 - 31/01/2023 21:05:50 2455691 Link 0 |
NUIG knocked out of Sigerson after extra time tonight. Tierney, Paul & Eoghan Kelly, Sweeney, etc played the entire game. Sean Kelly came on during the 2nd half. Marooned (Galway) - Posts: 2304 - 31/01/2023 21:09:50 2455692 Link 0 |
Martin Mac..... an average goalie???? You obviously didn't play against him in the 80's and 90's. I did. What a ridiculous statement!!!!!! StopTheLights (Galway) - Posts: 387 - 01/02/2023 08:31:29 2455703 Link 1 |
Potentially a midfield partner for Mc Daid in the future? Big, fast, athletic, powerful and has an eye for a score. Showed some nerves v Mayo but it was his first real competitive game at Senior level. StopTheLights (Galway) - Posts: 387 - 01/02/2023 08:38:20 2455705 Link 0 |
In todays game, goalkeepers restart around 25 times per game, sometimes more. That's 25 opportunities to retain possession, far more than any outfield player. In last years All Ireland Final, neither goalkeeper had a save to make. It's all about the restarts in todays game. Cluxton didn't build his reputation on his goalkeeping skill. Good win for Claregalway to get to the Connacht schools final. Won by 3 despite missing two penalties during the game. They were able to bring Eanna Monaghan off the bench today. Very strong side. galway19 (Galway) - Posts: 806 - 01/02/2023 14:42:04 2455806 Link 1 |
Think someone was asking about James McLaughlin's injury, he came off the bench last night for NUIG, clearly a fabulous talent but think he missed a lot of football in 2021& 2022 so he needs to stay fit and get a run of games behind him; Would have thought it would be highly unlikely he'll play for Galway this year but stranger things have happened, its a position where the backups aren't breathing down the neck of Conroy or McDaid. 6 foot 4 Cooke beat smaller Lavelle in the air? Timing was unfortunate for Lavelle but isn't the first and won't be last keeper to be beaten in the air. Look at Shane Ryan in league final v mayo a few years back, cluxton, beggan, Morgan, all star keepers who've suffered similar fate. Still think Lavelle is best keeper in Galway, certainly has the best variety of kickouts. Would like to see more of Flaherty in goal but played very well outfield for Claregalway. He might commit next year hopefully

Paul Conroy is like sexton, Galway are built around him so when he fades so do Galway. brisbane (Galway) - Posts: 675 - 01/02/2023 18:39:26 2455862 Link 0 |
The goalkeeping mistake, and it was a huge one, was the decision to run to the 21 yard line to contest the dropping ball when there were Salthill defenders there to deal with Cooke if he won possession.

Yes I am wondering if Patrick Kelly has been dropped from the panel altogether unless he has an injury? In fairness to him he had some good moments in last year's championship. He didn't have a good final but 4 other much more experienced forwards didn't have a good final either so it would be unfair to single him out for dropping as he is still a young player.

anymore beaten? diarmuid o connor taken off after 50mins, ruane's performance was raved about by the three mayo supporters analysing the game afterwards, ruane scored a point and think he caght one kickout and received a black card. not saying conrou just back and mc daid were both exemplary but lets stop with the lazy comments on here. supporters want cooke back in set up, he plays and gets criticised immediately, what do people want. cavan.galway (Galway) - Posts: 212 - 02/02/2023 10:47:04 2455931 Link 1 |
I saw him in the Dome with the squad. He wasn't togged but was dressed in the squad tracksuit the same as all the others that were not on the bench that night. Looked very much part of the panel. My guess is it is an injury of some sort. Can't imagine he would be dropped off the panel unless there was a commitment/discipline issues and we surely would have heard that if it was the case (generally we hear about rows when it isn't the case!!) I'll tell you what I want and its a functioning certrefield that gives us a reasonable chance of winning matches. In the connaught final last year and in the Kerry game we were cleaned out at center field. The Armagh or Derry games were not much better. I thought our centerfield last Saturday was very poor at gaining primary possession or in winning breaking ball. If we are getting beaten consisently at mid field I think there is an onus on management to see is there anyone better around. A lot of people here seems to think the answer is dropping Gleeson but I think the answer is to use the league to try and find one combative midfielder. In my opinion Conroys days as a midfielder are over. I'm delighted with McDaid at mid field as it seems his best position, as he was never impressive at wing back or wing forward but we need a strong physical presence beside him. As regards Cooke I'm delighted he's back in the fold but I dont see him as a mid fielder as I've yet to see him win high ball with either Moycullen or Galway. I'm really sorry to have bothered you with my lazy comments but if you point them out to me I will address them as best I can.
