Well sir, I would take a fully fit full forward line of C Mannion C Cooney C Whelan all day long over burns, killeen, mclaughlin or the 2 cooneys.

When I said the 2 Cooneys I meant Conor or Kevin, we're both starting Whelan, and I overlooked Mannion because he's obviously a starter but I have no idea where. So we are in agreement really

I agree with you hence me saying IT MAY COST US. I mean it's catch 22. What's the best way to be competitive in 2-3 years? Hold on to the old lads? I strongly doubt it. Maybe I'm wrong but we can't hold on to 2017 much longer.

It's about ability and there is no doubt but C Mannion C Cooney C Whelan on song have plenty of that and are a serious full forward line. J Flynn E Niland B Concannon in half forward line. The young lads can be used as impact subs katser (Galway) - Posts: 2521 - 11/03/2025 12:35:59 2595925 Link 1 |
Just out of curiosity what makes you think that full forward line would work??? The first thing management would do is tell Mannion to go roaming around the field and look for space. He needs space like all stylish players. Whatever chance Whelan has in a two man inside forward line Cooney has no chance. And please don't mention last Saturday night's league game. Championship hurling is a different beast...

I want the old fashioned 3 man inside full forward line, push out the half forward line and supply good ball inside...the type of ball that bounces off the ground into the hand of the out running full forward line. None of this horrible big high ball inside. In my luxurious career I played both back and forward and as a defender I absolutely loved to see a big highball raining down while as a forward hated the horrible highball....you'd be screaming placed into the hand a few feet in front of me. The forwards ball into the hand once you have it in the hand your King! katser (Galway) - Posts: 2521 - 11/03/2025 14:56:24 2595954 Link 1 |
100%.... Championship hurling is a serious increase in speed. As we have seen for the last few years the older players do ok in the league and fall away in championship. We are struggling to work the ball out from the back especially when a team pushes up on us. We may do well in Leinster but thats only because Leinster has never been as weak. Would any Leinster team qualify out of the Munster round robin? 1shot (Galway) - Posts: 13 - 11/03/2025 15:13:36 2595956 Link 1 |
You are in Cuckoo land if you think just because your half forward line pushes out towards midfield that the opposition half back line will follow. Limerick do the opposite they put Hannon sitting in front of their full back line and Kyle Hayes turns his wing forward into defender having to chase him up the pitch. Don't let the half back line follow and 3 unmarked half forwards out in midfield would easily drive the ball over the bar

I agree with you. An old fashioned 3 man inside forward line, no sweepers, no hand passing the ball to midfield and at least 70% of scores from the 50 yard line. It's what we dream of. I spoke with a man involved with an U13 team over the weekend. Coaching is all about retaining possession, hand pass after hand pass the skills of the game are dying.
