in longford its mullinalaghta by quite the distance both in terms of playing numbers and overall population they are small even by longford standards where every club is small. forgney would have been smaller but folded altogether a number of years ago

Amazing that they managed to win 3 senior championships so, let alone a Leinster Club championship on top of that.

Agree with other Westmeath posters re Loughnavalley, they have struggled for numbers recently I think.

Would Waterville's pick not be very small, it's in the parish of Dromid but Waterville itself is tiny, if you blink you are over the bridge into Sneem/Derrynane (and Templenoe - for underage) catchment area.

Mullinalaghta has the smallest geographic footprint in the county (slightly smaller than Ballymore I reckon), but I would bet that Legan Sarsfields is a smaller club in terms of number of members and players.

Loughnavalley would probably shade it. Stuck between Ballymore, Shandonagh, Milltown and Malachys. A lot of clubs competing for players in a small area."
Ballycomoyle has all of Collinstown, goes from starts between Delvin and Collinstown, right around by brownstown and the meath border all the way over to castlepollard and everything in between

Ballymore have the pick of Granard parish even though only a handful of townlands would play with them
Instead. Forgot about legan definitely small numbers there too

Eslin in Leitrim, Has to be one of the smallest rural clubs in Ireland, one/third of the Parish of Mohill, 12 Townlands with a poulation of under -200 hundred, no school since the 70's, no pub, no shop, has the most Junior Titles in Letrim.

Good shout for it. Not only the youngest club in Louth but also the most northerly club in the Wee County.

The smallest clubs in Cavan in terms of size and population are Maghera Mac Finns and Corlough.

Both rural clubs share a parish with a larger town or village club. Maghera is one of the oldest clubs in Cavan and has won the Cavan Senior Football Championship twice. However, it shares a parish with Ramor United, as both are located in the parish of Lurgan. The ladies' club represents the entire parish and is known as Lurgan; they are a consistently strong senior ladies' club. Ramor United, as the town team and a successful senior club, has influence throughout the parish, with top-tier players regularly featuring for the club. Maghera's difficulties over recent years have worsened, with considerable underage talent often moving to neighbouring clubs such as Ramor United, Cuchulainns, or Killinkere.

Corlough has no current senior team playing adult football. In recent years, there have been rumours of an amalgamation with neighbouring Swanlinbar, but nothing has materialised. Like Maghera, they struggle with the pull of players to the larger parish club, Templeport. Templeport is traditionally the strongest West Cavan club in terms of Championship success, which attracts players to the bigger club. Given that it is based in West Cavan, with a small and declining population, it is always going to be challenging for a club like that to attain success. They did compete in the 1982 Cavan Junior Football Championship final, but lost. They have never won a championship at the adult level.


After Maghera Mac Finns and Corlough, Shannon Gaels is the smallest in terms of population, as they cover the entire western tip of Cavan. The club was founded in 1978 to represent three parishes. Situated in the Cuilcagh Mountains, the club covers the areas west of the region, including Glangevlin, Dowra, and Blacklion. Interestingly, Templeport, being a large parish geographically, spans a vast area from Glangevlin to Bawnboy. Nonetheless, due to many factors, players tend to represent the much closer Shannon Gaels club.

Munterconnaught has only 14 townlands and is situated amongst some big clubs such as Ramor United and Castlerahan.

Mountnugent is similar in size, but it shares a parish with St. Brigid's, Ballinacree, in County Meath.

Another notable fact: Killinkere, which covers a large geographical area, is predominantly rural, and the parish has no pub, shop, or post office. The shop known as Tierney's and the post office have long since closed. The only pub in the parish is located at the club bar itself, serving a community with two churches and one national school across a large parish.

Lacken Celtic is the only club in County Cavan with no official pub in the parish of Ballintemple.
