The Munster hurling cup is bigger than any one man. Its not some little trinket like the Liam McCarthy or Bob O'Keefe cups

Course I have Cockney Cat and obviously one of the top 5 greatest of all time but he didn't have the same profile as Mackey . Lory was just before the papers started pushing sports properly.. But I take your point.

The 2 cups don't need names. They'd be too much hassle over it. Each county especially in hurling will have a case why our local hero's name should be on the cup.

Best leave it as it is."
It's a done deal. New cup will be called the Mick Mackey Cup. I think his whole demeanour and achievement are what set him apart aswell as his outrageous ability. And the fact that he was handsome helped as it always does. I say fair play to the Munster council. I'm sure 30 or 40 years from now when this cup is retired there'll be a new name again...say the 'Kyle Hayes Munster Cup'..

I think they should have called it the Declan Hannon cup seen as he will be lifting it for the next few years. Lol

Yup.
I took my eye off the ball with that one in fairness.

At least, you admit it, and are up front about it! However, while we're at it, and although Liam and Sam, both played powerful roles in what was in their time a very fledging GAA, neither ever swept the field like Mackey; the doyen of his age.

Have a listen. It might somehow contextualize hurling then and now. I mean, and I'd rate Shefflin the best that I've seen sweep the field, but has he yet had a song penned about him and his men?

Agree with you, I rather keep it with no name, yes he was a legend but should kept it the way it was.

Munster cup for all teams, no name needed. Mick Mackey is a legend and is remember across this island as one on the greats, naming this cup after him will not change that but only make certain people happy.

Why not honour greatness?
For example, if in 20 years time the Bob O'Keefe Cup (whoever he is) was replaced by the DJ Carey cup, I would have no major issue with that.
Having said that, naming any cup is a mine field even at club level. A friend of mine their club had an club cup which was intended to invite a few other clubs to a tournament. They couldn't even get agreement to name the cup after by far their most decorated player, with one lad piping up that his father drove car loads of teams to matches in the 60s-70s when people couldn't get to a match.

If we all thought that way no cup should be ever named after anybody. Once Christy, Ring, Nicky Rackard and Lory Meagher had been recognised for each of their exceptional achievements, there was no reason why Mick Mackey should not have been commemorated. That is only my opinion of course and only people may feel differently.

We should have the John Horan cup, a competition which Dublin only participate in.

Always respect your opinions and posts, you have a great knowledge but in my opinion, we have lessen their names, the Christy Ring is now division 3,Tommy Murphy cup is now dead, we are giving the greats token gestures, I would rather the mick Mackey tournament or the Christy Ring one, a celebration of the greats, be a different great every year, a true celebration, just feel this is a token gesture, Liam Mccarthy and Sam Maguire will always be top.

I find it incredible there is no name on the cup...Leinster has the Bob O'Keefe (god be with the days when Offaly were mentioned as winners:(...
