What do posters think of the Munster Hurling Championship getting a new cup and new name for the first time since 1928? I think it's appropriate that it celebrates the first universal 'Star' of hurling. Munster Cup same as the football one. They've tried a few times to give them names but there's always been differing names put forward. The Munster football Cup naming had to be parked. The Paidi O Se and Hogan factions wouldn't back down.

Mackey was the man. The KK V Cork finals of '31 attracted about 30,000 each. Five years in '36, in the midst of the Economic War, there was over 50,000 at the KK v LK final. Anyway, Lory is appropriately commemorated already in the All Ireland Cup that bears the illustrious Tullaroan mans name. Easier to market the Christy Ring cup is easier than their 3 cup

Would have liked it if they called The All Ireland Division 3 Championship for example and winners get the Christy Ring Cup

Well. Ring, Meagher and Rackard have their achievements acknowledged in National Competitions commemorating them. Mackey at least deserved some recognition. No serious coterie of sports writers or old hurlers ever claimed Meagher or Rackard were better hurlers than Mackey, great though both of them undoubtedly were.

Lory Meagher, is already commemorated in the Lory Meagher Cup. Anyway Mackey was the frst real star of hurling. In Cork and Kilkenny, with Lory on board played in three Finals. I do no think any of them attracted much more than 30,000. Five years later, in the midst of the Economic War, and with Mackey at his zenith, the 50,000 attendance mark was surpassed. Old hurling men like Jack and Jack Rochford from your own county acknowledged that Mackey was the greatest player they ever saw ( Rochford lived until 1973) and Mickey Maher the Tipp Captain of the 1890s said before his death in 1947 'Mick Mackey was the greatest I ever saw and I have seen them all'

Its great that Mick Mackey has been recognized officially with the naming of the Munster Senior Hurling Championship cup named in his honour.Anyone I have spoken with from that era from different counties back in the late 50's & 60's all say what a remarkable hurler he was,a cult figure and that he drew crowds on his own.Everyone in the hurling fraternity wanted to see him play.When I moved to Meath nearly 40 years ago I became acquainted with an old ex Meath footballer and he told me that even in Meath Mick Mackey would be the talk of the county leading up to the Limerick games,no Tv or even radio back then....all depended on the paper on Monday morning except for maybe the odd telegram with the result. Personally I wouldnt have a problem with Div 3 cup but it would get lost in all the other Div3 cups and for marketing you want something that instantly stands out especially on places like Google. Now I know plenty on here will have a hissy fit about modern things like that but if you want the tournaments to be a success easy access to results and news through online media is important
