Replying To yew_tree:  "I don't blame or begrudge elite players getting perks. But in the interest of it being a "team" sport I love the story I heard from Kilkenny a few years ago...not sure if it's true maybe someone here can confirm.

A Kilkenny player was offered a new car and the dealer rang Cody to see if it was ok after the player said he would need to check with the boss. Cody said no problem but only in one condition....every player in the panel has to get a car ;)...."
Never heard that Yewtree but it's a good story because like everything else in life the world is nt fair. It's the high profile players that get the cars while the unheralded lose out.

o'brien had an awful first half in the semi final in 2013, fell asleep for a kerry score at one stage, and was whipped off (possibly even before half time). never really got a lookin after that with the injury etc.

Darroch Mulhall and Tomás ó Connor (Kildare). I remember watching Mulhall a few times and thinking this guy has such class but just seemed to disappear off the Kildare panel very quickly. Tomas ó Connor was a big lad. A brilliant fielder and so strong but another that did nt get the breaks
I loved watching him play.

David Kelly was outstanding that year...I remember hearig his name time and time again...Sligo had a few over the years, pity they didnt really move up the divisions and we may have seen alot more of these great talents, but such is sport I suppose...

Replying To Young_gael:  "The Meath team of 2007-2012 was extremely inconsistent. Capable of beating Tyrone in an All-Ireland quarter final in '07, and Roscommon and Galway in the qualifiers the same year, then being beaten in the Leinster championship by Wexford a year later. Capable of getting to the all-Ireland semi in '09 by beating out a Mayo team and going out on a whimper to Kerry, and beating the Dubs by 5 goals in '10 only to slump horrendously in the Leinster final vs. Louth. When they clicked the were very good, when they didnt they were poor. Names such as Stephen Bray, Joe Sheridan, Peadar Byrne, Cian Ward, Brian Farrell... all potential greats, some won Minor and Junior titles, and all very good players. Ken Rennicks is a name thrown about from the 70s who was said to be the best Meath player to never win an All-Ireland. Donal Keogan may well be joining him."
Stephen Bray great Collgeges player along with Shane McCeigue

Yes Breffni David Kelly was another great player that went early. Actually in 2009 v Kerry he gave Marc ó Sé a right run around in Tralee. Sligo missed a late penalty to win game and Kerry went on to win Sam. Kelly was outstanding that day and Marc ó Sé was substituted. Marc was as good a corner back I've ever seen so that's a tribute to Kelly.

I think it might have been 2010, they beat Mayo in the Connacht Quarter Final and then Galway after a replay in the semi and lost to Roscommon by a point in the final after they were hot favourites coming into the game but Donie Shine inspired the Rossies to victory. In fairness Sligo had a decent team around that time and should have beaten Kerry the year before. Kelly was a brilliant that year alright but they had some other very good forwards in Adrian Marren, Mark Brehony and Alan Costello who I think was originally from Mayo. I think O'Hara was still around at that time as well. They had decent backs as well Charlie Harrison who I think got an All Star in 2010, Ross Donovan and Johnny Davey were all very good around that time, but that loss seemed to take a lot of them, as Down hammered them in the 4th round of the qualifiers that year.

Yeah they did have a lot of good players but most of them had lengthy enough inter-county careers. Kelly's seemed brief enough. Did he get injuries or just opted out or what happened

He played in the 2015 Connacht Final, so was around for another few years, but never reached the heights of 2010. What happened to Martin Dunne for ye in Cavan was very good and was a similar type of player as Kelly in that he was small and nippy and fairly accurate when he got the chance.
