Anti GAA Agenda

Replying To sam1884:  "I'd agree they might not intend or necessarily develop at the expense of the GAA, but in truth professional sport is ruthless, it has to be ruthless because ultimately the success of the business comes down to sporting success at the most senior levels (provinces and international team for rugby).

Has Limerick hurling responded well to the growth of Munster rugby and has the GAA and Dublin responded to the success of Leinster? Is the Connacht centre of excellence a response to the growth of Connacht rugby? As I mentioned earlier Ulster is unique and the GAA and rugby have their established communities there. The GAA are an amateur organisation but I'm not naive not to think Irish rugby wasn't discussed in high GAA offices, I think there has been hints Dublin's funding came about due to the falling numbers of GAA players in the capital and the increase in rugby players - of course there is an inhouse (GAA) problem there now.

Rugby is now an established sport in Ireland and I like it but as a GAA person I'm confident our organisation and games will not be overtaken, and I do smile when rugby media/personnel claim rugby is now number 1. I still stand over despite all the investment, success, spin of Irish rugby and whilst they might have made some inroads with increasing clubs/players the GAA communities are still intact and not impacted."
There was even a newspaper article recently in the Irish Independent in which rugby people themselves said that the success of the Limerick hurling was making inroads on the prospects of Munster Rugby.

Replying To yew_tree:  "Your correct in that the vast majority of people have had no direct contact with Rugby. So what? The GAA is the heart and soul of the vast majority of Irish parishes and communities. Rugby isn't....

I'd be a bandwagon rugby fan...watch the big 6 nations and rugby World Cup games. Same with soccer, although I'd have more of a gra for the soccer and I think the nation as a whole does. Just look at how nuts the country goes when Ireland quality for a world or European cup (could be a long time before we see that again).

But that said the Irish rugby team have given us great days and memories but it's from a far in my personal experience. I'd still put my club winning a championship game over Ireland winning a 6 nations championship.

Other people would be the opposite and that's fine, each to their own. This is a GAA site though so I'd assume the majority here have a live for the GAA first."
Definitely, choice of two games on TV and I'd watch any level of a GAA match before either soccer or rugby . Might even watch lawn bowls ahead of them .

Replying To KillingFields:  "Rugby is pro, they train more and are available more for media coverage.
Ask any journalist and theyd say the same.
Look at the sports photo sites like inpho and sportsfile they will have photographers and coverage of training every day for the pro rugby sites. They dont have near that for inter county gaa teams.

GAA is an amateur sport it doesnt mean it should be getting more coverage simply because more amateurs play it"
I think it is all about numbers, how many watch the games no matter the sport. It is nothing to do if they are professional or not. Remember up to a certain decade the Irish Times never printed GAA results. We have come a long long way from that, but not far enough. Rugby has not made much inroads at grassroots in Dublin, there are no huge sprouting of clubs. In fact what Dublin GAA did was revolutionise the grassroots, Rugby and Soccer followed. GAA is well watched, well supported, great participation. If you walk around Na Fianna you will see many a well known personality with their kids playing, Paul Reynolds, Dermot Bannon, Paschal O'Donaghue, Kieran Cuddihy a decade ago their kids would be playing Rugby/Hockey, they well still do, but they are in Na Fianna. So the profile of GAA is totally transformed in Dublin. One of the best hurling clubs in Dublin is in Rugby Heartland - Cuala. Times have changed but haven't changed enough.

Don't mind him...there are 6 teams in the Connacht schools cup. In Mayo I know of rugby played in Westport and Ballina schools.

GAA reporting a big loss for 2020. That is not good news. If anyone thinks I am moaning, just look at the old example of the Irish language. It used to be spoken all down the West coast 200 years ago. And in pockets on the East. It is almost completely gone now. The point I am making is there is no guarantee of survival for Gaelic games. Gaelic speaking Ireland is witness to that. Tá bron orm ach níl a lán Gaeilge ins an contae Mhaigh Eo mar sampla.

I often worry about that myself tbh, but my brother, who has no interest in any sport, looked at me like I had two heads when I ran that scenario by him.
From where he was sitting almost everyone and anyone followed it or played it so maybe were just being over cautious.
Hurling is definitely in need of more attention than football but so long as there are people willing to commit to their local clubs it'll be fine.

I understand these post below are far from shocking, just maybe a tiny bit insensitive perhaps, however my only concern is I have seen one or two posters Ostracized on this forum for posts that were although, no better than anyone else's posts, but were certainly no worse, and they always carried a grain or two of respectability.

1,200 supporters will be permitted into the RDS on Friday, 11 June for the Leinster Rugby RAINBOW CUP game against Dragons.

The GAA confirmed that 100 spectators will be permitted to attend inter-county games in the 26 counties from Monday, 7 June.

Can someone explain why a meaningless rugby game can have 1,200 people but important GAA games just 100 people?

It is one of a few trials across different sporting events including soccer, horse racing and GAA (3000 at the camogie final). Unlikely any mens league final will even go ahead. You would want a tinfoil hat to believe that these trials are part of some anti-GAA agenda. Hopefully all go well and we will see bigger crowds for provincial championship games

Did you hear the horrible comment that Dr Holohan said about the recent gatherings in South William street. He said it was like Jones road on All Ireland final day. What a horrible thing to say. And Heineken rugby and Guinness Pro 14 rugby can go ahead.

I am not sure why you are talking about a hat ?? I was wondering if someone could explain the reason a rugby game can have 1200 people attend and a football game just 100.
