Masks prevent the spread and science backs that up link
What is disgusting is people who refuse to wear masks"
Dr Tony Holohan said back last March that he wasn't convinced that masks were any addition."
That was March and he said in June "people should not become complacent if they are wearing a face mask."
you wear the mask as an added measure to all of the other things we think are important."

He said a face covering should be worn "in situations in indoor, enclosed spaces where we think physical distancing might be more of a challenge.

"In other words on public transport and in particular in retail settings - but any indoor setting where you might be likely to run into other people.

"We've been clear and consistent in that advice, it hasn't changed, we've given that advice since early May.

"But we think now is the right time for us to step up our communication in relation to that.

"We can see... that as we use public transport, as we visit shops that maybe it's only a minority of people who are following this advice.

"It's not the only piece of advice though, and it's really important that I get the message across, that this is an added hygiene measure.

"It doesn't replace the need for any other measure we've recommended".

Replying To gunman:  "You wouldn't need to be an epidemiologist a virologist or to know that any kind of barrier is bound to be a help.A Doctor from Derry put it well yesterday when he asked the naysayers if they were going in to a Covid test centre would they rather go in with or without a Mask."
Correct. It is sickening listening to hear people talking through their rear end about a subject they know nothing about and challenging the science that is trying to keep us safe. Talking about germs on masks etc. These people need find a hole, crawl into it before making themselves look more stupid. This especially when you have family members talking care of people dying horrific deaths and sometimes carrying out dead bodies, while risking themselves.
All you are been asked to do is follow a few preventive measures based on science and advice from professional people. Do they have ever thing right ?Probably not but common sense says I am going to gamble that these experts are giving sound advice because the stakes are too high and my little investment is minimum. So all you big brave gaa brothers stop your baby sobbing and put on your mask.

Even covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze-like we were all taught to do growing up-would help so of course a mask is better than nothing.

Replying To Green_Gold:  "I feel one of the major causes is that the northwest did not get many cases in the first wave and people got complacent. Donegal had zero cases for over 20 days during the summer. Another major problem is different restrictions on both sides of the border. For example, pubs are closed in Donegal now but you can skip across to Derry and Strabane where the pubs are opened. This is confusing people for sure.

A tighter border between north and south will not achieve much in my opinion. Cases are very high in Donegal, Derry and Tyrone so you would need to have no movement in and out of the entire region. We all know that won't happen because of politics."
Wouldn't rely to much on numbers that they are dishing out, know of 2 people who got positive test results back but the strange thing was that they missed their appointment to get tested. It's a mystery .

The hard facts are, is that the world and its people have never experienced any sickness, disease, virus, or anything as life threatening as Covid-19, there are many, thousands perhaps of world leading experts, world leading scientists, qualified in every sense of the word to analyse and put together a formula to manufacture a vaccine to supress and rid the world of the Covid -19 pandemic but they appear to be struggling with that as much as we are trying to understand it.
In recent TV debates/ discussions, even they at times seem to be in disagreement with one or other in the debate, so if they can't agree what chance have we got to stay in agreement. However there are some who just don't want to wear a mask at all, others will reluctantly wear the transparent visor type or the mask type, perhaps vanity comes into play at this point or by nature people simply don't like been told what to do it's that simple. Wear a mask, social distance, wash your hands, no house parties, etc, etc.

I would much prefer if people listened to those qualified to talk and guide us through this night mare than listen to the likes of me who is not even qualified to ask a question. I am prepared to hang in there do my bit and play by the rules, in the interest of family and extended family first.

To need a barrier or a border suggests to me the problem is being amplified by people as much as Covid-19

They didn't get positive test results from the HSE if they didn't do the test.

I'm sure there is somewhere. The facts are that heart attack deaths could double during Covid , then you take into account Cancer ,missed appointments etc and country is coming to a standstill because of Covid. Look after the people that need looking after and deal with the other as it happens.

Wouldn't buy that story for a second. It shows how serious they are about the virus if they missed their appointments to begin with. Then they are cable of giving you a cock and bull story trying to create a narrative that suits them and you are on here thinking you scored a goal. Sad little people around.

Wear a mask, keep your distance from people, don't go anywhere you don't have to go, stop the house parties, wash your hands properly and often, keep control of your kids and make sure they also wear masks, and there's no need for whole families to do the shopping together with kids running all over the shop, one person should do the shopping, a bit of manners and common sense is needed, we can beat this virus back but it will take people to wise up rapidly, but there is an awful lot of half wits about as we all know, we have to start speaking up and make sure we get control of this, otherwise we are headed to hell in handbasket.

Kirsty Maccoll.

The COVID risk is higher within the HSE and hospitals and they need extra available capacity. That's why some hospital appointments are being postponed. GPs won't allow walkups, encouraging people to ring them if they show symptoms and/or need to schedule appointments for bloods etc. They need to schedule appointments so there's minimal contact between people in waiting rooms. All we need to do is follow the guidelines, wear a mask, wash our hands thoroughly, social distance, etc. We have it easy compared to HSE staff and other front line workers.

934 cases in N Ireland - that's like 5,000 in the south when you take population into the thinking. N Ireland has now the highest cases in Europe

Replying To Canuck:  "It was bad judgement but because it is the GAA there will be sections of the Northern Ireland authorities who will want to turn it into a three ring circus. The would want to shut down the GAA if there was never a pandemic. There has been other incidents as you said where the people who want the games most, pull the mat out from under it by congregating inside the grounds and outside. These people think they are a law unto themselves. So there can only be one answer sadly, cut them off completely.
To me many of the GAA grounds could safely have thousands of fans with some innovation and cooperation. Where there is seating pre allocate spaced out seats with families togethers. Give people an allocated time for entry by seat numbers. If you do not arrive at check in time tough sh-t your not going in. Filter people out also by calling the seat numbers out to exit. I am sure terrace standing spots could be numbered also. Check points to randomly check who are travelling together. Yes it would take a lot of administration and control but I am sure there are many people who would pay for it to get to a game. However again there are probable too many idiots out there to make anything work."
Listen to yourself. Obsessed with face masks but sure we'll bring thousands together to a match. Put your belongings in a small clear bag, line up to your called to enter and then take your seat .We'll get Bruce Heller to police it and everything will be grand. Don't forget Passport. No supporters would be safer than that.

What I said was a possible means of having supporters safely at games and clarified it by saying it could not be done because of people not complying with rules, regulations, preventative requirements and the difficulty to execute. An opinion. You on the other hand came on here with a cock and bull story trying to sell a flawed testing procedure. Now you launch into childish rhetoric about paper bags and passports.
I am obsessed with all the requirements that will save the lives of people dying from covid. The science and experts have given us the numbers of saved lives that could be expected if everyone was obsessed with the recommendations.
