Why Are Kerry The Worst Supported County In Ireland ?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Antrim are by far the worst supported county , Wicklow would be next worst .

Biggest drought 1887 - 1903 (if you exclude the hurling All-Ireland in 1891).
As I posted earlier 1986-97 was the next longest.
Alas I think your pessimistic outlook for Kerry GAA is misplaced, there is certainly an All-Ireland in this team, whether this year is a year too soon we shall see.

Why wouldn't they defend themselves?

Meath wouldn't be far off that title, relatively speaking they are alot worse supported then Kerry, particular in croke park...... no part of meath is much more then an hour from croke park anymore, we actually had somethng to cheer about this year compared to recent years yet the meath attendance in croke park all year was pathetic.

Large population of about 200K, great facilities, right next to the NSC also, influx of people from Dublin to the commuter belt becoming Meath residents will continue to boost numbers, great footballing tradition, any number of ex-players with silverware available to assist, no top flight hurling senior team distractions. It's a mystery. Definite signs of improvement but poor managerial appointments, county board in-fighting etc don't appear to have helped matters.

Meath's football bandwagon has completely collapsed since Dublin started dominating us. The meath team hasn't been too bad on average the last 15 years but losing to your main rivals everytime you play them bar one championship match and one O'Byrne Cup game takes it's toll.

Now, any sensible meath person recognises we'll never reach the heights Dublin are at, so we're down to the hardcore when it comes to travelling to Croker. I think next year there will be big crowds in navan for our league matches but we won't travel in numbers. I boycotted the leinster final. Next year I'll extend that to any leinster match that isn't in navan.

I can see a stage where I'll only go to league matches. The AI final hasn't happened yet and it feels like the season has already ended. There's no buzz anymore.

Is this what the next two weeks are going to be on here, nothing but wall to wall Kerry bashing?
I mean sure we're no-hopers in this final, we're just praying our young lads give a good account of themselves against a team destined for immortality.
Why does everyone get so spooked whenever the Kingdom wins a game ...."
Spooked???.....nobody is spooked Hermit. Ye are not that scary.

Defend themselves from what???
Jesus I can almost hear the opening strains of Games of Throne theme music as the camera pans across the common blue hordes from Dublinia advancing on the border of The Aristocratic Kingdom, where the sacred flame of GAA football is kept. The old Chieftain Pat Spillane utters the Kerry war cry "Yerra" , mounts the ramparts the and urges his army to fight to the death because the future of football is now at stake.

Helm, this is an Internet forum not some imaginary battle.

Absolutely no buzz at all in the bars of London. Very similar to last year, when everyone knew it was a foregone conclusion. I hope I'm wrong, but can't see anything but a fairly comfortable win for the Dubs. If we get a hammering, as the so called best of the rest, what will that do for the rest of the counties hopes next year.

I'm hoping for a really exciting tight game. The sport really needs it. If nothing more than to prevent country wide apathy next year.

Ha ha ive visions of a heap of Kerry fans marching like white walkers making their way to the Luas stop after parking up at the Red Cow, as close as they feel safe to leave the oul Skoda Octavia inside the M50. ;)

"Yerra, what's a leap card". :D

Kerry fans good supporters in that they have high expectations and that drives team on. In Kerry, winning is as much a cause for relief (among players) as it is for celebrations (among fans). And there's more to supporting football than going to matches tbh.

Too much success too, of course - I remember in the noughties, 04 or 06, a bloke from Kerry I knew, I asked him was he going to the final (he was into his football). He hesitated, as he was a keen fisherman and the weather forecast was good for fishing. I was surprised, and said so. I never forgot his answer: "Ah yeah," he said, "but it's only Mayo." At that time, Mayo just collapsed in finals and there was not a massive interest in being at a one-sided final.
