Lacey insists red card didn't cost Kilcoo

Poor decision making rather than Darryl Branagan’s red card cost Kilcoo victory in last Sunday’s Ulster club SFC final according to their manager Karl Lacey.

The Magpies played the last quarter with 14 men after Branagan was dismissed for an incident involving Errigal Ciarán opponent Odhran Robinson, but that wasn’t the reason they came up short in Lacey’s opinion.

“We just didn't do enough with the ball. Put it simply as that. We weren't good enough on attack, we weren't composed enough on attack,” the 2012 Donegal All-Ireland SFC winning centre back lamented.

“We had a lot of fumbles, a lot of handling errors, a lot of forced passes, a lot of poor decisions in key areas. We scored 10 points, conceded 1-8. Conceding 1-8 against a team like Errigal Ciaran. . . we should be good enough to win the game, we just didn't hurt them the other way.”

He added: “It's obviously very difficult against 15 men when you're down a man. We were doing very well on their kickouts.

“We were taking possession of their kickouts and then we lost that, obviously. Losing a man then, we weren't getting possession of their kickouts. That didn't help us either. It just came down to us with the ball. We just weren't clinical enough.”
