Down bounced back from their late defeat to Fermanagh last weekend with a come from behind victory over Westmeath this evening to put themselves right back in the promotion picture in Division 3.

It finished 1-10 to 0-11 at Pairc Esler, where Odhran Murdock’s 55th minute penalty proved key in the Mourne men’s seven-point turnaround.

Westmeath had dominated the second quarter in Newry to run up a 0-8 to 0-3 advantage come half-time and a pair of John Heslin points after the turnaround looked to have them home and dry.

However, Conor Laverty’s charges hung in there with a brace from Andrew Gilmore and were ignited by Murdock’s penalty after a foul on Liam Kerr, as points via Pat Havern (2), Ceilum Doherty (2) and Gilmore got them back on the winning track.

In Corrigan Park, Fermanagh also staged a comeback victory as Sean Quigley’s late goal helped steer them past Antrim on a 2-13 to 3-9 scoreline.

The Erne men looked in trouble after goals from Joe Finnegan and Peter Healy within two minutes of each other had the hosts leading 3-7 to 0-8 with a little over 20 minutes to go.

Ultan Kelm’s goal five minutes later gave Kieran Donnelly’s side a lifeline though and the points of Ciaran Corrigan and Garvan Jones kept the heat on the Glensmen heading down the home stretch.

Jones cancelled out a point from Pat Shivers in injury-time before Quigley flicked the former’s free to the net to square matters and Conor McGee would sail over in the 74th minute to deal Fermanagh’s third win in four outings.
